Nice grocery store. Reminds me of central market in Austin. Food is a bit higher end and fresher than typical grocery store, but this isn't a novelty store. I thought the vegetable and fruits were extremely fresh. Some things were over priced even if in-season, and the meats were ok but nothing really special. Few specials or deals on products. All typical dry goods and an extensive wine and beer selection. Overall, I would shop here if I lived in the area, but I would also save bulk items for a more cost efficient store (eg Target) to save money. read more

First time here! It reminds me of maybe a central market / Tom Thumb. There were various organic/vegan/gluten free/ healthy option available but not quite to the extend of Whole Foods or sprouts. Because their options are very large I wish they would combine all of these items into 1 or 2 isles so that it's easy to find. I did like their on the go food options such as their salad bar, taco bar? Sushi bar, prepared entrees, and gelato station! They also have a variety of squeezed juices! Food at the Fresh Grill. Hamburger was fantastic... unfortunately I ordered the chicken sandwich. When I picked up the food it was so close to closing I didn't have them redo the order. My wife's shrimp tacos were overdone and missing the sauce which they provided when she asked. Her rice was pretty dry and my sweet potato fries were frankly just burned up. The high-end stuff is there too (for a high-end price of course). Meats, you want the premium free-of-everything pure stuff - got it. Want the plain old USDA Choice? Got that too. Fresh salads, prepared. Great salad bar if you want to make your own. Then, out on the patio, they have draft beer and wine "cocktails." (It's the South after all, but I hear they are delicious). Jesus Christ (my apologies to all of Smith County's Baptist population) this is one hell of a grocery store! I never would've expected to see such a monstrosity of a grocery in Tyler, Texas. In fact, it mirrors some of the best groceries I used to frequent in Chicago. Amazing produce. Check. Seafood, steak, and poultry. Check. A taco bar. Yep, it's Texas. An outdoor patio with some sort of a deli configuration. Check. Beer and wine. Ha, yes, I did a double take, as Smith County has been dry for...well, forever. The Baptists now have to come out of the closet, and risk having someone see them purchase the forbidden fruit. I could spend hours in Fresh. There is literally nothing that they don't have, as far as groceries are concerned. *IF* I were to move to Tyler, this is the only place I would shop. Well done! read more

I live in Palestine, but it's worth my driving 42 miles to shop here. It's very attractive, the produce and seafoods are fantastic, Meat department has fallen off a bit. Cheese department likewise. First class deli. First class bakery. First of all, your shopping experience begins with the help. Service is friendly and first rate, although people working in the cheese department (for example) don't really know much about their products. A little better training would easily solve this problem. The produce department is incredible. Lots of organic produce available. Several kinds of potatoes; several kinds of greens, tomatoes, and every other thing I've looked for. Many things I've never heard of, but will eventually try. Ready-made dinners available for reasonable prices. The bakery is awesome, with the brioche being the best of its type I've ever eaten. If you like ice cream, try their gelatto flavors made on site. It's really delicious ice cream. They have some excellent sodas (Brand is "Mash") for cocktails, and their parmesan and garlic crusted slices of toasted bread (in small bags) that are superb with salads, dips, and cheeses. Their smoked salmon (and dip) is great. I simply cannot understand why anyone who really cares about what they eat would shop anywhere else in the Tyler area. Fresh organic produce is wonderful, and worth the drive, and their "natural" (not factory-farmed) pork products are free from harmones and antibiotics. While the staff is still learning, they are otherwise the equal (on a smaller scale) of Whole Foods are Central Market. HOWEVER, that said, there are some "danger" signs that make one worry about the determination of Brookshire's to stay the course. As examples, the meat department originally carried two types of prime beef, one of which was "dry-aged" USDA "prime". I don't eat as much beef as I used to, but when I am entertaining and serving steaks or prime rib, I very much want to serve "the best" which is USDA prime and dry-aged over 30 days. Very troubling for them to drop all their prime beef. Likewise, veal and lamb offerings in the meat department seem reduced. Also, their cheese department used to have large bars of gourmet quality American chocolate, and now the boss of that department doesn't let their people order it, leaving all you can get as "white chocolate" which is no chocolate at all. This store has a real chance for greatness, but given the challenge of demographics, needs extra help to "educate" the potential shoppers and turn them into devotees of the store. Cutting back of products I've come to depend on and am willing to drive nearly 100 miles weekly far is not the answer. Now, as for prices, the prices on the "premium items" are reasonable as compared to Whole Foods or Central Market. Prices on "ordinary" items are marked up compared to other stores, but to me it seems worth it to support this quality of store in East Texas. read more

Sorry it can't be four, but I gave my favorite grocery store four stars. This seems to be a concept store by Brookshire's on the southwestern edge of Tyler on Old Jacksonville Highway, a few miles away from what seems to be a Brookshire's distribution center. When you drive up, just know that most of the parking is in the back. The front has this ungodly amount of steps up to the entrance, and there are only a few express registers. The main parking lot is in the back. Produce is plentiful, with some super interesting selections like currants and different roots that I haven't seen at specialty supermarkets in larger cities. I'm not sure exactly who is BUYING all of these items, but maybe Tyler has a large and secret epicurean scene. I doubt it - it's probably most for looks. It's even weirder that I couldn't find items that I would expect to find at a health store, like a huge assortment of special teas or whatever. Instead, there were about four varieties of kombucha, some pomegranate teas, and Coke products. Again, I'm not sure what someone who wants to eat heirloom radishes and fresh currants doesn't want with 1,000 types of kombucha, but who am I? I'm not sure about the layout - the produce and hot foot area is sequestered off from the aisles of the market in a super-compartmentalized way. So, it seems like there are lots of people in this very friendly produce section and it seems very friendly, then you're suddenly in these sterile rows of regular food products (seriously, I saw IHOP brand pancake syrup - is that "FRESH"?). It's a bit jarring, but that's not the store's fault, and everything seems to be easy to find, except for hummus, which I couldn't find at all. I LOVE the idea of bulk cut vegetables. Why don't more places do this? It seemed very clean and a great idea if a little expensive. But, someone else did all of the pain-in-the-ass work, and that day, it was worth it to me. There is a taco area that seemed crowded and some hot sandwiches. Also, some hillbilly manager I'm sure thought it'd be a great idea to hire a State Fair-esque old man talking into a headset microphone that makes comments about what he sees around him, and I HATE THAT. It makes you nervous to pick things up while you're in his line of sight. Anyway, this is a neat grocery store for Tyler, and I really like some of the idea that are in it. The building is kind of neat/weird/unfriendly to new shoppers (loads of steps in the front?) and out in nowhere - these places should encourage sustainable living by placing themselves in city centers are near dense residential areas (not sure that Tyler has any of this). Instead, it's located far away from anything near a bunch of gated communities. But, some of the bulk food ideas are neat, the produce selection is (oddly) specific, and the rest of the store serves as a pretty normal grocery store with reasonable prices (large Hass avocados for $1 each!). Just remember to park in the back. read more

When staying in Tyler, TX and being vegan or vegetarian you will need to come to this grocery store. It's similar to Whole Foods but not quite as nice or fancy, lots of selection, high priced options, specialty foods including gluten free, sugar free, organic and faux meat products. I had heard about FRESH and finally had an excuse to visit recently. I was blown away. Brookshire's nailed it with this concept. Yes, it can be a bit pricey, but I'll pay a bit more for high quality items in a quality shopping environment. Maybe it doesn't have quite all the bells and whistles as a colossal Whole Foods, but it comes pretty close and it's by far the best grocery option in Tyler. I usually eat a full meal from their prepared food stations every time I go (the taco stand is my favorite). They have everything I'm looking for, both gourmet and standard items, the produce is always ripe and delicious, they even have live music on some weekend nights giving it a full on party atmosphere. This place is the best. Wish there was one close to where I live. read more

Pretty nice upscale collection of items, but damn if you aren't prepared to pay for it. Brookshires is notorious for being the most expensive on most itemsand FRESH is no exception. Generally speaking the atmosphere is great, the service is hit and miss. The deli is great as is the cheese section. The prepared stuff is meh. Salad bar is very good. Wine/Beer selection is hands down one of the best around. Bakery is inconsistent, we got lemon tarts twice where they mistook salt for sugar. Gelato is more expensive than when I was in Paris. They have live music on the patio quite often. Conclusion: go for specialty items not found elsewhere in town. Skip it for everyday shopping unless you like to waste money for the heck.of it. read more

Best grocery store in the Tyler area--not even a contest. It reminds me more of a nice H-E-B than Whole Foods/Central Market, but in a good way. I could find many "normal" (read: not necessarily organic or high-end) along with the specialty items I craved. Imagine my disappointment when I tried to find the giant "I hate buying this, so I buy lots of it at once" packs of toilet paper in a Whole Foods. They don't carry those. So, anyway, Fresh's resemblance to a standard H-E-B is a good thing. One-stop shopping FTW. This place has all the lovely things I got spoiled from at H-E-B when I lived in Waco and more: all kinds of organic/ethnic TV dinners, an extensive selection of delicious cheeses, a sushi bar, mini-restaurants inside for tasty take-out, fresh-squeezed juices, and things that are just plain interesting. Curry ketchup, anyone? I've been a bit of a fan of organic items ever since our hall in the dorms at college noticed that items like milk and salad mix didn't spoil as quickly as the regular ones. When you're buying for one (especially one who eats like a bird), spending a little extra to make sure half of it doesn't go bad before you get around to eating it makes sense, IMHO. There's plenty of organics to be had here. The parking lot is definitely wacky. Much of it is behind the building. Tyler's far too spread out for there to ever be enough plug-in electric vehicles to fill up all the spots they have for them. You'd fizzle out of battery just going from here to Overton and back, for Pete's sake. The layout is a tad jumbled. There are cashiers by each door, but most of them are in a row at the back of the store. They don't take the Brookshire's points?-type card since they're just a concept, which probably doesn't help with the priciness of things. It's modern, bright and clean. Go anyway. read more

The best meat market in south Tyler. 5 star wine selection. Very nice variety of import beers. The usual domestics with a few crafts and local brews. Wonderful salad bar and dip bar. Decent produce and fruit. Excellent bakery. The taco stand is meh. The sandwich shop is 3.5/5 This place gets a lot of money from me monthly. I'm a big fan. Fresh is the "Whole Foods" of Tyler. They have a large variety of organic and tropical fruits and vegetables as well as pre-made meals. The have fresh juices, fresh sushi and a great deli. On the weekend you can eat out at their grill and listen to live music. This is a great place for families to relax on a Friday or Saturday night. read more

We moved here from Austin, so Fresh feels like home to us. It's a beautiful store with lots of options that we just can't find at any other grocer in town. We try not to eat many processed foods, so produce and protein are important staples in our household. Fresh makes that easy for us. The produce is always fresh and seasonal, which I appreciate. I don't know if their beef is grassfed, though I feel like they would label it if it was. I love that they have hanger steak. It's usually impossible to find at other stores. Fantastic seafood options! We bought some oysters there a few weeks ago that were absolutely delicious. The staff is always helpful and friendly. I wish they would start carrying unsalted Kerrygold butter, that way we wouldn't have to drive to Dallas to buy it from Central Market. Other than that, it's a fantastic store with tons of healthy options. read more

The best option in town for high quality food whether packaged, fresh, or prepared in-house. Parking is very easy. Great patio seating and food on-site. A fun place to eat when they have live music going. On-site gas station as well. The meat department is friendly and knowledgeable and they carry certified Angus on up to wagyu, prime, and akaushi beef. Seafood selection is good as well and they will steak your food while you wait if you like. Bakery makes a good variety of bread, breakfast pastries, cakes, and other sweets. On top of all these things, they also carry a broad selection of groceries you would find at a normal Brookshires mixed in with specialty items. read more

My husband likes to drop by Fresh for their bakery bread from time to time. Several times he has brought home 1 and 2 day ( not looking at the date) old bakery bread but Fresh charges full price. I've seen this at Brookshires also. I know of NO bakery that sells their day old and older bread for full price. Number 1 we go to the bakery to buy a fresh loaf. Day old and older is unacceptable but I realize some people don't mind the older bread. For them this should be discounted. It's not rocket science it's just good customer service. read more

Having moved from DFW area to Athens, TX I was so pleased to find this jewel of a store just 30ish miles away. I go weekly and have nothing but great experiences and products. Our faves are zucchini bread, chicken salad, twice baked potatoes, meatloaf, salsa, etc. Their marinated beef and chicken fajita meats are so delicious!
