Let me just say- we will 100% be back! The owner, Bruce, was super personable and stood around chatting with us and our friends for probably an hour. Seems like a very genuine person and very involved in the community. He's doing really cool things with his business and we're happy to support them now. The gentleman that does the grilling (can't remember his name) deserves an award for his tenderloin. It was fantastic! Seasoned to perfection, fresh, crispy... one of the best I've had in a long time. The tenderloin salad was SO good. My husband really enjoyed hanging out and talking with him as well. The woman in the kitchen (Anna I believe?)... SO SWEET! She brought us some homemade egg rolls to sample as we were leaving and they were absolutely DELICIOUS. The plum sauce was such a good touch and the ginger inside stood out and tasted amazing. The meat was very flavorful, the veggies inside were perfect, and the outside was crispy. I could easily stop once a week for her egg rolls... TOP NOTCH! The hang-out spot out back is cool! We love that it's nothing "fancy", it's like hanging out in a friend's back yard and we were able to park our SxS out back too. Everyone was chatty and happy to be there. Always in pursuit of "off the beaten path" gems you can often find in places in small town Indiana,…read morethe Red Room Cakery fits that bill. Prairieton....small township, population maybe 1300...maybe, 12 minutes from the south side of Terre Haute. Discovered on a Facebook post indicating a "pop-up from 10am-2pm" on the Sunday we showed up, the Red Room Cakery is actually wholesale and not normally open to the public. Lots of cake displays and brag books about, cakes are clearly this guys jam, in addition to the baked goods he sells thru restaurants in a 50 miles radius of his Prairieton ovens. And by "this guy," I am referring to Chef J who is here this day with his side kick employee Olivia. And don't underestimate Olivia and her shy demeanor, as a current student of Purdue's hospitality program and an award winning cake baker from a 4-H event not so long ago, she knows her way around a baked good. I always say "behind every good man is a better woman" and that be Olivia in this case. Chef J could not be more of a sweeter teddy bear type personality if he tried. Kind of a bit unexpected considering that this spot is not normally open to the public, which really means "I have enough business and I would rather not deal with the public." But on this day and in this moment of this pop-up that I show up with my aging folks from Terre Haute, we were treated with real midwestern hospitality...the kind that I have forgotten about living on the west coast and in giant urban cities around the planet. I tend to drill down hard to get to the meat of a business or a person, so after grilling this overgrown teddy bear a bit, Chef J is explaining to me his military career (thank you for your service!) and how he got into cooking before he is inviting me around the back to see the action of the kitchen. The smell of hot sugar and yeast coming from an oven, painting a glaze of a gooey cinnamon concoction on top of the twists baked just so, the perfect amount of flaky crust and mildly doughy center to make this twist Mid-westernly delish. We are consuming one right on the spot before we depart. Some lava cakes for good measure, we walk out with some items to enjoy at home and happy to have made the acquaintance of Chef J and Olivia. And those lava cakes.... Keep in the frig vs the counter and then pop in the microwave for about 30-40 seconds....incredible! Really delicious. The actual establishment is again not normally open, so I am appreciating this unicorn moment. There is no hot coffee option, music chiming in or even many places to sit. Nothing about this spot says "hang out/linger." Rumor has it that Chef J tried pizza for awhile and it just did not catch on. What I clearly know and the greater Praireton area does not....bakers make the best pizzas because the dough is always exceptional. But anyway.... I consider the Red Room Cakery and our unique moment to visit and buy some baked goods moment a big win and really enjoyed taking the trip over from Terre Haute. Chef J is celebrating 10 years of being in business this summer. I am on the look out during all visits now moving forward when in Terre Haute to see if the baked goods served at an eatery come from the Red Room Cakery. Because there they are a little bit delicious and a little bit Midwestern, which makes the perfect baked good in my eyes.

Ended up eating inside and watching a little bit of a cooking show that was on. Along with chatting with the owner. All in all if you want a great environment and treat this is the place to go. In the UP, seems there are few places that have produce reasonably priced. Most grocery stores…read morecharge double or more for the same fruits or veggies that I can get in my area near Chicago. For example, the 79-cents a pound plums are more like $2.29 in the UP at the store. Luckily, there's a roadside produce stand like Spiessl's on the edge of Neugaunee along US-41, right next to the "Welcome to Ishpeming" sign on the road, if you're headed westbound. This place is nothing more than a series of tents and some tables with no distinguishing signs to draw attention on the road. You just have to know it's there and stop in if you're headed to or from Marquette. The Spiessl name is that of the family who runs the business, which is what the girl at the cash register told me. The place is a pretty bare-bones operation with the tables, a scale, cash register and boxes of produce marked with hand-written prices. During the growing season, it's open from morning till sunset every day. The corn here is usually the bi-color yellow/white variety, always succulent and soft. They also have cherries, blueberries, raspberries and tomatoes brought in from the Lower Peninsula. Perhaps my favorite find on this trip were the freshly picked Michigan peaches, all soft and fuzzy and juicy, not like the flavorless rock apples from California you buy at the supermarket. There were still green leaves attached to some of the fruits! They also have awesome sweet mini-watermelons the size of cantaloupes. And they carry another Upper Michigan specialty - the club-like 2-foot long monster-sized zucchini that you can probably use to bludgeon a person to death. And you never know what you may find there. Last summer, I got a cluster of mid-sized, perfectly round and flavorful tomatoes. I asked where they are from and to my surprise - Israel of all places! Amazing how they turned up in the Michigan UP. They were so good that I saved the seeds to plant in my garden next year. Finally, it seems they have the best deal on bananas too, 40 cents a pound, for my hungry Stunt Boy who runs on banana fuel sometimes. Hard to beat that even in Chicago.

It had lavender, bourbon, maybe vanilla, and it had lavender dust. My only critique would be maybe let the cute sharpie quotes on the lids dry before giving them to customers. My date didn't realize the sharpie was wet which resulted in it getting on his nose. I had to stare at that green mark for our 40 minute conversation before I could get the courage to tell him that he had sharpie on his nose. I got a great laugh out of it.
