However a 5 star review encouraged us to give it a try. I am beyond thrilled that we did! Everyone orders their food at the register in the small market. They do a tremendous amount of take out business. The phone was ringing off the hook for take out orders. We ordered a few items to see what all of the fuss is about. They have a lot of pictures on the wall of the sushi they serve. We decided on a volcano roll. It was made to order and it was delicious. We ordered 6 pork dumplings. They were light and crispy on the outside and the pork on the inside was very flavorful. As one of the entrees we chose Pancit. We learned later that it is there #1 item ordered. It is a nice portion of rice noodles, cabbage, carrots, green beans, in a very light sauce. You can choose Chicken or shrimp. We chose chicken. It is in small pieces and fits perfectly with the julienned veggies and the thin rice noodles. We also ordered the special of the day which was Marinated Beef. It came in a bowl with a dark beef broth and onions. There was a side office to go with it. The beef felt like it was melting in your mouth. Absolutely delicious! We poured some of the rice into the bowl to soak up some of the broth. You didn't want to miss a drop. Here we thought we had ordered a lot of food and would have leftovers but we cleaned every plate. It was that good. I wish I lived closer because I would eat here a lot. Yum!

My favorite things to buy here are: 1. Jamaican ginger ale (non-alcoholic). Has a real gingery bite. American ginger ale will seem weak by comparison after trying this. 2. Plantains, very green, for slicing and deep-frying into chips. 3. Palm oil. This is a "bad" oil high in saturated fat, but I use it in moderation. One, for "seasoning" cast-iron skillets (instead of Crisco). And two, just a teaspoon added to "good oil" when cooking popcorn. (I cook regular non-microwave popcorn in a wok, using 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of peanut oil or corn oil, plus 1 teaspoon of palm oil, plus 1/2 cup of popcorn kernals.) The palm oil gives it a movie-theater flavor and a little tint of orange. 4. Canned powdered (dry) whole milk. Most powdered milk you buy at American groceries is non-fat. This has all the cream. I don't like to buy fresh milk, because I don't drink much. So I keep this around for baking. Watch the expiration date, because it doesn't keep as long as non-fat milk, but it's still usually good for at least a year. 5. Various flours, like yam flour, cocoyam flour, plantain flour, rice flour, and corn starch. 6. Exotic bar soaps. They have various imported soap, some medicated some very fragrant.

We grabbed a tray and some tongs and I let my kids each pick out a few giant basteies while I selected two pan de muertos from the cooling racks they had wheeled out for the holiday. You need to go to the register first and let them know how many and which kind of tamales you want, and they'll get them for you. The tamales have the perfect proportion of masa to meat, and they are cooked all the way through and not at all gummy, like some tamales can get when they're not cooked properly. They have other tamales besides pork, but I was only interested in pork when I visited, so I can't tell you for sure what other kinds they have. This is also a grocery store, so there are lots of packaged Mexican foods here, as well as a small panderia with some bolillos and a selection of pan dulce. This looks to be a great place to find Mexican candy (Lucas, Tajin, tamarindo candy, those little disks of chalky peanut butter with the picture of the abuelita on them, etc.), as I saw a lot of different candies.

I think they're going to rotate their offerings, so I can't guarantee that they'll always have the British snacks specifically, but they do have an international section, so it'll be fun to pop in and see what's being offered.
