Love love love this place!!! As a person who tries to eat organic food, I was eager to find a healthy place to eat when my family and I arrived in San Juan. Not only were we able to buy organic produce and kid snacks, but we also discovered their cafe on the top floor. We had several meals there, and tried the challah French toast (which was amazing), the organic eggs, basmati rice, vegan sausage meal, pizza, chicken sandwich and burritos, and the fresh squeezed orange juice. They also have acai bowls and gelato on their main floor. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious!!! Not to mention, the prices in the cafe (second floor) were cheaper than all the other places we went to eat. And a added bonus, the staff and cooks were so friendly! The only reason I give this new place a sucky review is because the prepared food sucks, or should I say the preparer sucks. We went on a Saturday morning and ordered a mushroom and cheese sandwich, which was really nasty: it was soggy with oil and the portobello mushroom was not cooked properly; the chunky girl at the helm seemed to have bad mojo: grumpy. I really felt I did not want to eat any food that she touched. I know that sounds mean, but it is really how I felt. Also, the potato salad was the BLANDEST crap I have ever had, and it had a wizened (nasty, old) olive on it...why serve an ancient olive in a place that is overrun with fresh olives? Is there a special school where whole foods folks go to learn how NOT to cook? Every since Moosewood Cookbook came out years ago every hippy thinks she can cook without sugar, salt or spices, or technique. The cafe itself it gorgeous, a real gem for Puerto Rico, and the best part of the whole place is the standup cold drink coolers; you just open the glass door like in 7/11 and grab your drink; I got an organic root beer for .85. At checkout the girls were chatting and indifferent: rude. I would fire the whole staff and rehire "friendly" and "healthy" looking workers so this place can get up and going. Also, if they cannot "fix" the food and the service, this place may sink, even with the really beautiful surroundings up top. If they do not change their ways, I may just go to drink coffee, tea and soft drinks; you can sit up over the store and watch Ashford Avenue: it reminds me of place I went in NYC back in the day. Great health food store with a cafeteria-style eatery on top. Some vegetarian and vegan options, make sure they did not treat the grill with butter before you order something to be cooked! It's okay, if you're into this organic thing. One can find some interesting things in store, but, honestly, the wares are a bit overpriced. Went to the café upstairs for a quick light bite. An interesting space, with a nice view of the Ashford below. But what a total disappointment. Had a couple of salads, which were not flavorful. The Greek salad, is a total disappointment; they seem to have no idea of what a real greek salad is made of. And it was mostly liquid, I had a pool of flavorless liquid that filled half the container; for a second I thought they were giving me a gazpacho instead. Also had a chick pea salad, which was hard (did no one cooked the chick peas until tender?) and flavorless. Again, does no one know what salt is in that place? Also had a salmon with dill, which was okay, not too flavorful, but was way overcooked and dry. The only good thing was the beer, they have a decent offering of beers; but THAT they didn't cook or make, it came from a bottle. Nice place, I guess; very fancy and a must for the organic crowd. I used to love this place. I completely love the food and their healthy selections. However, today was a huge disappointment. I went to the second floor to eat some brunch (it used to be just walking towards the cooking station, you order your food, pay at the register, and sit wherever you like). Whoever thought it was a good idea to have servers during brunch should know that it is the worst. The servers are completely unprofessional. I was sat and had to wait 15 minutes for someone to pass by and take my order. I stood up and approached one of the workers to see if they could take my order and they said they would be right with me... which meant they'll be there in 7 minutes. There were 4 tables occupied with customers and three servers, so it doesn't make sense why they took so long. I noticed that the other hungry customers like myself were also uncomfortable with the service since the servers never had the politeness to say "Hello, welcome, be right with you". It's simple manners. It's not that hard to at least try to look like you care about your job. Once I got my meal, which was good, I wanted to leave immediately. It's really unfortunate that a place that has great food has bad service. Just for that I won't be coming back again. Get some food from the first floor and make it yourself to avoid the bad experience. read more

I love the Freshmart grocery store, other than their long lines/generally slow service which is average for San Juan. This review is only for the Freshmart Deli. The service is extremely, extremely poor. I have dealt with extremely long waits, lack of customer service, general unfriendliness (which again, Puerto Rico is different than the States, but this is especially bad) and being given the wrong order. In my latest attempt, I ordered and *paid for* a medium pepperoni pizza (serves 2) and side salad. I was given a small (serves 1) plain cheese pizza and no salad. I noticed the salad was missing and asked for that, but didn't realize that the pizza, which comes in a fairly large box, was not what I had ordered until I came home. I had to go back to Freshmart to exchange my order. When I asked to speak to a manager about the service, the unfriendly cashier actually mocked me to her coworkers. The manager listened to my complaint but only looked solemn and then asked how many times I'd had bad customer service experiences, or if this was an isolated event. She did not offer anything other than an acknowledgment of my complaint. No apology, no complimentary side dish, no coupon, nothing. I was so baffled by the lack of customer service and complete apathy. The food product is mediocre and overpriced. The best part was that the new pizza was STILL not pepperoni. It's not that hard to get someone's order right, especially if the store requires you to pay in advance. I will never be back! read more

Great supermarket. Delicious vegetarian, vegan, gluten free food at the cafe. My mom shop and eat here every time we are in Puerto Rico. There are several locations around the island so if you are traveling you will not be far from one. Went in for the breakfast and have to say that it was anything BUT FRESH!!! The wedge potatoes and hashbrown appeared to have been made yesteray and they just nuke them some. I had a really bad experience at this supermarket. First of all, some employee seem to hate their job and don't care about the customers, not even the managers. They look like they are there just so they can get a paycheck. I went upstairs to get a chicken burger and a soup. After 20 min of waiting I asked the guy who was preparing the food if he had my order ready and he said that he didn't recive my order. He was nice and he did try to prepare my order by unfortunately they didn't even have all the ingredients to make my food. I asked for the refund and the girl manager came out to give me my money back. She didn't even apologize or ask if there was anything else they could offer me since I was there waiting for almost 30 min with no food. She didn't care at all or even look at me once. She just didn't give a damn. They are extremely incompetent. read more

The eating area on the second floor is clean and modern. There are plenty of vegetarian options, and the prices are reasonable. Stayed at the Marriott Stellaris just up the street for a week. The grocery store on the lower level is like a mini Whole Foods. Upstairs is a wonderful casual deli. It serves breakfast, as well as takeaway type deli style foods. There are several kinds of pizza that you can get by the slice (like, sweet potato and onion not just your usual slice of pizza) - options with regular cheeses or vegan cheeses. You can also order larger sizes. Then, there is the cold salads section with a variety of options - from a wonderful potato salad, coleslaw, black bean salad, macaroni salad and the like. There is also a hot bar with a variety of vegetarian or vegan foods. The rice and beans are always outstanding, and very cheap - under $4 for a main. We ate there everyday for a week. Also, bought picnic food and brought it to the rainforest for lunch as vegetarian/vegan options there are lacking. The vegan combo plate for $8 gives you three choices of and entree and two sides of whatever you want. The staff was outstanding - very accommodating, informed and nice. Ask questions as they were always very happy to explain every ingredient in any dish, and offer you a taste if you wanted as well. Overall, strongly encourage anyone seeking fresh, yummy food to check it out. read more
