a trip to maine--obviously, but i need to point out the obvious--and why a trip to maine you ask--a…read morephone conversation with my girlfriend and we figured out that the two of us have never been to maine--other than me but it was a drive from new hampshire to portland to fly out. anyway, there was one light house in particular that she needed to see--and she had it in her phone. and of course it was the west quoddy head lighthouse. so we hopped in the car and drove to lubec all the way from albuquerque which is a long story in itself. i was tasked to find lodging all along the trip, and realized that there was not a lot in lubec. Found the West Quoddy Station, and sure why not give it a try. We were so glad we did. the first thing we noticed is that it was QUIET. peaceful quiet. and was everything as advertised. we had the starboard bouy barn, and it was nice and roomy. having a kitchen meant we could just get something in town and cook in the room. to be able to just have a nice meal and enjoy the scenery was fantastic. the room was nice and warm for may, and the shower was terrific. big bathroom which is a plus. definitely worth the drive!!

This place is located in one of the most beautiful areas in Maine. The grounds and the buildings are gorgeous, as are all of the surroundings. The exterior of the buildings is immaculately maintained and the landscaping is lovely. We stayed in the Cabin. I booked it because of location and the history of the building. The photos showed it was primitive but clean, and I'm fine with primitive, as long as it's clean. Check in process is very old fashioned...you arrive to find your name on a public bulletin board outside the office, and go to your unlocked cabin to find your keys and a printed welcome note with instructions. Obviously this is not an automated process, and a decent amount of effort goes into this process every day. It was actually quaint. The management had sent a very nice email with a long, detailed list of interesting things to do & amazing sights in the area, along with how to access them. This was very thoughtful & helpful! As stated earlier, the location is breathtaking. Several wildflowers were blooming, including lupines, and the sweeping views of the water were just gorgeous. We loved strolling the grounds and got some amazing photos. It truly felt like "real Maine", not some tourist version. When we arrived & got into the cabin, we noticed an odor that went beyond the usual musty old cabin smell. But it was still at the beginning of the season, so I assumed the old cabin had been shut up all winter and just needed to be aired out. It was fairly dark inside even with the curtains open. I was disappointed to see the leather chair that looked comfy in the photos was actually very old and the seat had what looked to be broken springs showing through, so we didn't sit on it. The kitchen appeared clean & very well appointed with everything you'd need to cook your own meals, including a full size fridge, toaster, microwave and a gas range, and every cooking and eating utensil, including a tea kettle. The bathroom appeared clean, with thick towels, a hair dryer, and soaps/shampoo/conditioner. We opened the windows to let the fresh air in, anxious to go exploring the lighthouse and surrounding area. When we returned, the cabin had still not aired out. Upon turning down the beds, we saw there was a lot of pet hair on the bedspread and on the pillowcases and sheets (we were not traveling with animals). Upon turning on the lamps we saw the shades were stained and there were cobwebs and piles of pet hair on the floors and in the corners, and it was at this point that we noticed one of the bath towels didn't look clean. I'd now lost faith, but there is very little in the way of other places to stay in the area & it was already getting late. My husband said "it's only one night" and we were getting up early the next morning anyway, so we quickly ran to the local Dollar General just before they closed and bought our own blankets and towels. We made the best of it, getting up at 4am (the sky was already getting light at this time) to see the sunrise at West Quoddy Lighthouse, which was an amazing experience! In the light of the morning we saw just how much pet hair was on the floors, and it was pretty gross, but by then we were leaving, heading out for our next adventure. This is my advice to anyone booking the Cabin at West Quoddy Station: check your expectations. We didn't experience any of the spaces other than the Cabin, so this review is only for that particular building. The Cabin IS quite primitive, it smells very musty, and the level of clean was not to our personal satisfaction. But if you're up for some history and adventure and as my husband says "you don't mind feeling like you're staying in some random guy's hunting cabin", you might find yourself having an adventure in an historic building at one of the most beautiful spots in the U.S.

I booked the Ocean Bay Cottage for my family of 3 for a wedding on the property and really wanted…read moreto love it, but I'm sorry to say it was a bad experience from the moment we arrived. First, we entered the cabin to find it was not cleaned or prepared for us. The amount of dead bugs and frass lining every single wall and corner of the cabin, under the beds and couches, etc., was absolutely disgusting. The thought of my 5 year old playing on this floor and walking around barefoot completely skeeved me out. My husband found a broom and dustpan in one of the closets and spent over an hour sweeping it all out. The worst part about this was that I was charged a $150 cleaning fee as part of my final invoice before arriving. We got a hold of Ross who was apologetic and said he would refund the cleaning fee (the cleaning lady "forgot" to prep our cabin). He also said it had been about three weeks since someone had last used the cabin, so that's what happens when it sits empty. I received an email later that day confirming that $95 had been refunded to my card which honestly did not feel adequate, we assumed it was going to be a full $150 refund considering how much we'd already paid to rent the cabin and that we had to waste our time cleaning it ourselves. The coffee maker was also a disgusting mess, filled with scale and years of coffee grounds stuck to everything where grounds were not supposed to be. It took almost an hour to scrape clean and then scrub - this thing had clearly never been cleaned, ever. We even contemplated going out and buying a new coffee maker altogether but there's nowhere in the area to go for anything like that. The hot water heater had not been turned on for us so it took awhile once we figured that out to get hot water. Fine. But now for the worst part. The cabin has well water which we're used to from home, but the sulfur smell was so strong it made the entire stay a nightmare. The well desperately needs to be treated. Ross told us to run the water for awhile and trust me, we did (for a very, very long time) and it didn't help at all. I couldn't get over the smell of rotten eggs for the entire 5 days we were there. Every single time the water was turned on (even for a few seconds) it started all over again and I needed to step away. I couldn't wash my face without gagging uncontrollably, and the lingering smell after turning the water off meant having to constantly open up all the windows to air out the cabin and sometimes even go for a walk after the water was on for awhile or hide in our bedroom with the door shut. I think I'm scarred from this, we went to breakfast one day and the smell of eggs made me gag.. it's going to take awhile to get over. All I can say is thank god we had family staying in the two nearby cabins. I was able to go shower and wash up there each day instead, though having to walk over in the pitch dark at night through grass that's completely filled with goose poop was not fun. I'm so glad I paid $265+ per night to not be able to use my own running water. Never again. From the moment we arrived I was counting the minutes until we could leave, especially since our bed had seen better days and my husband and I couldn't get good sleep for the entire stay. Weeks of chiropractic work was undone after sleeping on this miserable old mattress for 5 nights. Pros: Great view and we made some really nice fires in the fire-pit each night. That's about it. The property is nice and serene, just be sure you're an outdoorsy person and don't mind the smell of rotten eggs if you're considering booking.

Well, not here. Also, isn't the definition of an B& B include breakfast??? Actually, I'm relieved there was no breakfast, as the kitchen was falling in. When I called for the booking, the owner, Pam Francis, did not give me any information, confirmation or any way to communicate with her. I called the week before my stay and had a very hard time getting in touch with her. I offered an email, a credit card....anything to secure our reservation and to get information about our stay. Pam is not on site and has depended on the help from a long-term guest to see to other guest's needs. This is without recompense. Victoria does this from the goodness of her heart. When you arrive, don't expect a welcome, a hello or a kiss my ....... Pam is the most unwelcoming person I have ever encountered. Not only is she unwelcoming, she acted as though we were an inconvenience. I haven't had eyes rolled at me since I was a child. The house, while lovely, is old and in disrepair, the rooms are bare bones. My room had a peeling ceiling. There was no soap, clean sheets, maybe?, old flat pillows, no extra blanket. There WAS a strange closet jammed with detritus that I blocked with a bench. It was creepy. I didn't have a key to lock my door. I hid my belongings in the shower and took pictures of my other stuff to make sure it hadn't been tampered with. Fortunately, the one night I was there was relatively warm, because there is no heat..... in Northern Maine. The whole place was just awful. No, not just awful, it was a travesty. Pam Francis apparently acquired this property with no skill in managing properties. There have been no inspections of her property and she only accepts checks or cash...........WHICH WE FOUND OUT WHEN TRYING TO ESCAPE. The guests that left just before us ( who were booked for multiple nights and left after one) couldn't get in touch with Pam and left her a note saying they would call her with a credit card. She wanted ME to go to a bank and get cash to pay for my stay. I should have been paid to stay there. I would not do that and dragged her info out of her so I could mail her a check when I get home. Why would someone with ZERO people skills, ZERO business sense and ZERO financial acuity try to run an B&B?? I have ideas, but hesitate to name them. The IRS can look into it.
