And then we waited & waited. At 8:15 our chowder was served. It was indeed loaded....with mostly potatoes. I encountered 4 pieces of clam. My husband didn't count but said he too found very few clam pieces This was not a $22 bowl of chowder! The fish & chips & mussels arrived. A small piece of haddock on some sad fries was ok. Not great, but ok. We uncovered the bowl of mussels to find they were stone cold. We sent them back & turned down the offer to make a new order. The check for just the chowder and haddock was $47. Had they been wonderful, I would not have cared, but they were just ok. We will not bother going back.

The wine selection is above satisfactory, and they shake up a mean cocktail for those who prefer luscious tastes of liquor. They have a good selection of beer, if memory serves me correctly, but wine is much better suited for the food they serve. The whole restaurant is very nice. It was once a house that was converted to its current form. If you are lucky enough to be seated at the outside table with the fireplace, you are definitely in the best seats in the house. The view on the patio is stunning, as you gaze into the Passamaqoddy Bay. It is not always possible to get a reservation there, as it is rightfully seen as the pearl of the oyster that is the Saint Andrews food scene.

The waitress said the fries were homemade, but moments later turned to admit that they were now "regular fries" as the restaurant was closing in a few days. "Will that be ok anyway?", she asked. I chose the rice pilaf instead. The plates came quickly and my ever-growing fear was confirmed. Skimpy portions of the good stuff, and it all looked extraordinarily bland. There were about 7 quarter-sized scallops sitting on a leaf of lettuce. I had ordered them pan fried and they were, but for too long. In all fairness to the chef, pan frying such small scallops properly is not an easy task. The rice pilaf appeared to be Minute Rice cooked in a soy sauce broth. The plate was loaded with fresh carrots and turnip, but these were boiled and plain, and completely unappealing. Troy's plate looked similar, but his deep fried clams were significantly tastier (although still rubbery) and his frozen fries actually looked appetizing next to my little ricey lump. If you're a blue hair on a tour bus you might very well like the homey atmosphere, the kitschy decor, and the taste-free food. If you're anyone else, I'd recommend giving the Captains Cabin a miss. This is a pricy tourist trap, plain and simple, and it's sad to see our delicious local seafood and produce being dressed down to this degree.
