The property was lovely, but a house was being built immediately behind Hartwood (the name of the rental). The site was being leveled and the bulldozers began at 7 am, all day long. The noise was so bad we left the house during the day. We spoke to the rental agent, who did not offer an alternative to us, nor any discount on the (very expensive) rent. Clearly the owner and agent would have known this was happening and could have informed us and offered other arrangements. We decided to be good-natured about it, although we were explicitly upset about it and it was clearly not the peaceful Maine vacation we sought. We rented the property again this year, with the caveat that we be informed of any pending construction. This is a pay-in-full ahead of time rental contract, with no refunds, which we knew. However, my husband became ill just before the trip, and his doctor forbade traveling. We asked for some consideration from the rental agency, given our dreadful noise experience last year. We were essentially told "this is business-you should have gotten vacation insurance". Although we and our family loved the property, we would not rent it again, or any other property through this agency. Not a renter-friendly agency at all. So disappointing.

This is our second visit to West Quoddy Station in as many months. The first was a drop everything…read moreand just go Friday Night getaway in May. Luckily for us, the massive Station House--we surmise the former lifesaving station's dormitory--was available and offered at a not to be refused price. What fun to rattle around its many bedrooms and baths. Most memorable were the sweeping views across the Bay of Fundy north to Lubec and Campobello Island, and that evening's awe-inspiring sunset. You would do well to consider The Station House for family or friend reunion or small business retreats. We enjoyed West Quoddy Station so much that we decided to return for our 42nd wedding anniversary, but only if we could get the Crew's Quarters cabin, its views comparable to The Station House's with even greater privacy. Twice lucky! Given Crew's Quarters unassuming Downeast shingle exterior, we were nearly stunned and very impressed upon entering to discover possibly the most meticulously constructed Post and Beam home in my thirty years selling Downeast real estate. Talk about overbuilt! Every cedar beam heftier, every plank and floor board wider than required, all carefully joined. No place for sheetrock in Crew's Quarters: instead every wall built of wide cedar planks pleasingly laid diagonally. Plus a fully vaulted ceiling with exposed beams. And those views of the blue Bay of Fundy, even bluer skies from bedrooms, living, and dining rooms, and Crew's Quarters spacious deck. We, our friends, and their aging golden service dog, Brigid, were very comfortable. The weather being fine, we spent most of our time relaxing and dining on the deck. Everything worked fine in the shared bathroom, towels were thick. The kitchen wasn't gourmet-worthy, but the toaster took a split bagel and the vintage Mr. Coffee worked. There's a pot for boiling lobster, if you must. Had the weather turned cold--as it can, quickly--we would have been grateful for the propane "woodstove" and large Rinnaii heater. We did way better than survive. We'll be back! P.S. West Quoddy Station is a dozen minutes from the International Bridge to Campobello Island, a few minutes more to the auto and bike ferry to Deer Island, itself worth a day's touring. Nearby artsy Eastport, Maine, is worth a visit. And don't miss Monica's Chocolates in Lubec!

Found the West Quoddy Station, and sure why not give it a try. We were so glad we did. the first thing we noticed is that it was QUIET. peaceful quiet. and was everything as advertised. we had the starboard bouy barn, and it was nice and roomy. having a kitchen meant we could just get something in town and cook in the room. to be able to just have a nice meal and enjoy the scenery was fantastic. the room was nice and warm for may, and the shower was terrific. big bathroom which is a plus. definitely worth the drive!!

The house is technically 4…read morebedrooms and 1 bath, but we only used the upstairs (1K 1Q) - the first floor has two small rooms with a twin in each; the bathroom is upstairs. Highlights: the kitchen is fully (and may I add perfectly) stocked to actually cook dinner in - lobster pots and crackers, pots, pans, knives, everything. They even provide the dish soap and paper towels...something we never get when we travel in the south. There is a washer dryer (again, there is soap) in the basement. Next, there are tons of books, DVDs, an XBox and even toys/books for little ones! Since we were flying this was key. There is also a crib, high chair and stroller. Other rentals up here don't offer that! The deck is great - lots of seating and a nice view of the harbor. They have some adirondack chairs down by the shore and a fire pit. You can walk to the marina (buy lobster from a lobsterman!) or into town in just a few minutes. Oh and there is AC...again many places up here don't have it and you never know if it will be 95 or 75 up here in summer...we've had both! It's about 25- minutes to get into Acadia National Park, which may seem far. But the town of Southwest Harbor is so quaint I'm glad we stayed here.
