My husband and I have been shopping here for years. It is a decent size store and the layout makes it easy to find what you need. We have purchased wood, pavers, a shower door, and plants just to name a few. There is also a nice garden center with quality plants. We recently purchased a rose tree and plan to buy more fruit trees soon. The staff has always been nice and helpful. The store is inside a shopping center with sufficient parking. read more

But today I went to a return a Dorcy rechargeable flashlight that I couldn't recharge after less than 2 months of use; it was the second defective one I'd had, but I hadn't thought to return the first. The clerk at the Exchange counter was quite rude and blamed me for not plugging it in properly. He did eventually give me a refund, but it made me think twice about buying anything that I might have to return. read more

Not a fan of writing one star reviews, but this one deserves it. I have been buying paint on and off for several years from Friedman's and never had an issue. A few times the match was not perfect (Small amount of paint purchased), and they decided to match a new batch at no cost. Fast forward now to 2025 where I purchased a few gallons for painting inside and out. I brought samples and they looked to be okay in the lighted area, but I never know until I paint a wall and it completely dries to be honest. This time the match was quite off to the point where I'd either have to paint the entire house or quite simply just get a re match to something that's closer. I had used maybe an eighth of the gallon purchased for the first room, so not much waste at all. When I brought it back with photos showing how off it was, I was greeted with a wonderful individual who basically smirked and said "That's a bummer". A bummer indeed, but one would think they would do something at that point. Nope, he merely turned his back to me to work on a new batch of paint for another customer. I asked if he could replace the match that clearly did not work, he told me "Company rules dictate we don't take paint back". He proceeded to tell me that other customers were waiting and needed his attention and that I'll have to paint my entire house as he couldn't get close to the match. So spend hundreds of dollars to fix a terrible match in hopes they get it right this time...I just took my business elsewhere and will never recommend Friedman's again to anyone for paint purposes, just truly sad customer service and willing to stand by a product. Ended up going to another paint store (Larger chain paint store) that matched it much closer to the original and stated they will re match for free if there are any issues. Lesson learned. read more

Stop by Friedmans Petaluma. I needed one simple item. They had the item. Luckly I found it by myself because there was no one to help in the store. That's pretty much the normal for that store. I get to the register and there are two registers open. There were four customers in line for each one. Again the norm for that store. When I finally get to the check out. The clerk says nothing. When i finished paying cash there was no thank you, have a great day. Nothing. One can get items faster from Amazon than getting in and out of Friedmans. read more

Bought a boy's axe for my son, 2nd time using it the axe blade fell off the handle. Complete junk. Left it out overnight like the junk it was. Took it to the store a month or two later to return it. Customer service person wouldn't let me return it because by then it was out of the return window and it had gotten rust on it. I've spent thousands of dollars a year at Friedmans and generally find the staff knowledgeable and friendly. Unfortunately, their return policy is so rigid and unpleasant it's driving me to shop elsewhere -- even if it means a 15-mile trip to Home Depot. Every return feels like an interrogation. They question everything -- the condition, the packaging, how and when I purchased it -- even when the item is clearly unused. I return maybe three times a year out of hundreds of purchases, yet I'm treated like I'm trying to pull a fast one. I've never experienced a hardware store with a worse return experience. It's frustrating enough that, despite the helpful salespeople and the convenience, I'll go elsewhere to avoid the hassle. read more

The contractor department is fabulous! Once Robbin (front end) got Frank involved with my order the experience did a 180. from delivery to customer service. Outstanding; We made a mistake with our pavers and started to install the wrong pattern. So it was either pull the pavers or fix the quantity and sizes. Well we liked the wrong pattern so I called Frank. He made our mistake transition go smoothly with no restocking fees. If you're involved with a large project go to the Petaluma Contractors desk and get in touch with Frank M. Do not start on a weekend, unfortunately, we did but Frank took care of everything!! read more

My wife and I recently purchased kitchen cabinets from Friedman's Home Improvement, choosing the Medallion Cabinetry line--what we were told was a quality, mid-range brand. We worked with Cynthia, and while the design process was initially smooth due to us knowing exactly what we wanted, the issues began once the cabinets arrived. The workmanship on the cabinets was disappointing--sloppy assembly, missing pieces, and several doors and drawers that still don't open or close properly. On top of that, Cynthia made a measuring error in the plans by two inches, which forced us to buy an additional cabinet and discard another that no longer fit. This was a costly mistake, and Friedman's offered no real solution or compensation--just told us to spend more to fix the issue. We expected better service and accountability, especially when working with a company that promotes itself as a home improvement expert. Unfortunately, our experience was frustrating and expensive. We will not be using Friedman's again and recommend others look elsewhere for their remodeling needs. read more

When I'm in need of anything for a DIY home project, Friedman's is my go-to destination to find most of what I need. Although it's relatively large (compared to the Ace hardware, for example), it's way smaller than Home Depot, so they simply don't have the floor space to carry the diversity of products you find at the bigger stores. Pricing-wise, Friedman's is also a little more expensive, most likely because they don't have the same buying power as the larger chains. That being said, I still love shopping here and supporting our locally owned businesses whenever possible. I find it reasonably straightforward to find what I need, but have not had the same experience as other reviewers that found it difficult to locate an associate for help. Usually when I'm browsing, I'll get approached and asked if I need any help--but maybe I just look less handy and potentially in greater need of assistance :P I have two minor complaints, though. The first is that electrical supplies are pretty limited. They probably have 1/4 or less of the inventory of Home Depot and 1/10 of a supply house. If you're looking for a niche part, you're unlikely to find it here. I am likely biased because most of my DIY work is electrical. Second, it's not possible to search online if a location has a particular product. You have to go there and spend time looking, or call first. With HD, I can check inventory in near real-time so I can decide whether or not to make the trip. Hopefully, this is something they'll improve with time. read more

We've had good experiences at Friedman when redoing our bathroom -- they had the vanity, sink, countertop, faucet and medicine chest we wanted in stock - and I think Jennifer was the lady who helped us - she was great, Another woman there who used to be a bartender was really helpful too. And a man who taped up the boxes so the vanity & counter wouldn't fall out was really nice. Two guys helped us by loading everything in our SUV. Then, when we had to return a few things we didn't need afterall, Olga at the Returns counter was so nice and when we didn't have a receipt for one of the items, she quickly found it using our credit card info. I just would like them to have cashiers in the garden center - it'd be a lot faster. Otherwise, Friedman's is such a nice, clean, organized, helpful home center -- and prices are better than Home Depot.g read more

Friedman's is a Do-it-Best affiliate, which really shows in how the store is run. This is one of the nicest home improvement stores I've been in, so much so, I made three trips in while visiting the area. My husband and I drive here from San Rafael since we know whatever we purchase here is good quality and they have excellent service. The staff here are incredibly friendly and there is always someone nearby to help. I can't tell you how many times I've been to Home Depot where I've had to search the whole store to find one employee who looks aggravated. Not here! Recently we were looking at electrical items for a renovation and we got approached a few different times, all by different staff. Ample parking, large store, not crammed packed, large variety of items and helpful employees. Unfortunately, it seems they never have what I'm looking for. For instance I was looking for a particular plastic piece for my sprinkler system, I showed the employee my "good" part. He looked over all the sprinkler parts that I had just looked at and then he determined that they didn't carry that part and if they didn't carry it then I didn't need it and should change my system. Funny, I went to Orchard and they had exactly what I was looking for. A few days later went to look for gardening gloves and while they had lots of gloves, they had a lot of the same ones just different color and sizes. Again, I went to Orchard which had a smaller section of gloves but a larger variety & styles. I'm sure this isn't always the case as I have seen variety of other items such as BBQ's and more, and while back when looking for toilet seats they had a large variety and great prices (yes I purchased mine there) as opposed to the smaller selection at Orchard. Over the last 8months we have been to multiple stores as we remodeled and converted our school bus into an epic tiny house on wheels and every day we went to Friedmans (sometimes 4/5 times in one day) BRAD in electrical was ALWAYS the guy with the answers, about everything! Even if it's not in his department. Friedmans is lucky to have such an employee and I couldn't not come on here after 12 years in constructions and 1000s of trips to the hardware stores and we generally always get good service but Brad has exceeded those expectations with knowing the answers to our questions every single time. Well stocked, poorly staffed. I have gone in and had to call for an employee with in the store and have had to wait 5 minutes for the employee to find me- I was standing next to the button that paged them. I have also had visits where the girl out in the lumber yard was very informative about the different woods. It is just hit and miss on customer service- it all depends on who you get. It seems as if not everyone is on the same page/level. It's sad because they would have a huge leg up from their other competition in Blue and Orange. read more

My wife and I used to be regular patrons of Friedman we used to buy home improvement items and we used to love the way we were treated there.. one day, I tried to return a plant that had died and that we had nurtured but for some reason it just did not live and I tried to return it to my amazement. The lady at the return counter said we need to call the plant manager in.. I waited a few minutes and this lady appeared with a skowle on her face after looking at the plant, she immediately said you didn't buy this plant here to which I said my wife just bought it a couple of weeks ago. It has the same label on it... she refused to give me my money back for the plant to which I asked to see a manager. The manager was a little more understanding, but still would not give us a refund to which I looked for a compromise and said, how about if we just exchange it the plant manager was shaking her head, and saying no no no, but the manager stepped and said OK will do that.. I can't believe the gauntlet that they put me through to exchange this plant exchange a plant. I will never buy even a nail at at Friedmans again I cannot believe what they put us through to exchange a GD plant.. there must be gold buried in those plants because these people have taken cheap to a new level ..you just don't treat people that way, I'm still shaking my head now.. the plant manager that gave me grief looked like she was out of a scary Halloween movie read more

She patiently worked with us through several revisions of the overall kitchen design, even when we would ask her to go back to the original and start over again. Angela is calm, funny, and put us at ease even as we debated over which white finish was actually the white we wanted to go with. I've been in here on several occasions to browse for specific items. I noticed that the store is soooo clean and organized. The staff is helpful and the prices are competitive. The cleanliness of the store is so impressive that I could just walk through the aisles and impulsively shop (I try not to do that very often). I'm not a real fan of the pickup area; the last time I had to pick up a bathroom vanity, it was a little chaotic and there was nobody in that section directing traffic. My item sat outside for more than 30 minutes and nobody informed me that it was ready for us to pick up. If they could get a better handle on this part of their business, they could be almost perfect. read more

I really try to shop local (Friedman's) first, but it has become a 4 time trend to show up at the store after calling ahead and after being VERY VERY SPECIFIC, using correct terminology, and being assured the item I desire is physically in stock at the store, to arrive there and have Mr. Tool Man tell me "Nope, we don't have that. Yes, I'm the one who spoke to you on the phone and said we have it. Sorry we don't carry it. " And then he turns away to help a man waiting for his time.
