I have been a long time customer of maselli, The last two visits have been unpleasant at best,on my last visit I tried to buy an item with a clearly marked price 395,00. I went to the desk to pay and they told me to go out to the item and wait. I did as they asked, A young man came out and basically yelled at me,saying that it was 600.00 and if I did not like it look it up in a catalog of new similar items. We charge accordingly!! Stating that If I did not like to bad. Bait and switch comes to mind. also would like to say that rude does not cover this person, He is unprofessional and offensive. I recently made a first visit. 1. The selection of items in the hardware store is wide and unique, and some items there I believe are not easily available locally elsewhere. 2. The price I paid for the hardware items I bought were acceptable. I judge they were priced in the range I expect if I could find them elsewhere. 3. Employee attitude was, well, mixed. When I asked for help to find an item, all was good. During checkout, the attitude was less than neutral or friendly. This was not so overt as to keep me away, but I noticed, and I will be wary. 4. I took a trip to the yard also. The help there was great. The employee in the yard met me immediately at entry to the yard, and had a great attitude. He helped me find the material I was looking for after I failed to find it. Lots of good stuff. I am predisposed to spend my money with local businesses, especially one like Maselli's. A little work to keep better attitudes in the store would coax more money out of my wallet. read more

Never shop here! Customer service is horrible. Rude! Especially older woman behind the counter! Had to return a $14.00 item because it didn't fit. The rude woman behind the counter gave us a look as we walked in with our opened package. She just stood there and didn't say a word. I had to ask her if she could help me. I told her I needed to return this item and then handed her my receipt from 2 days earlier. We cant take this back, you opened it". We can't sell it because you opened it. Excuse me? I explained to her I had to open it to see if it would fit. I again explained to her how I had to open it to see if the bracket inside would fit. The rude woman told me to take it home. I recently visited M Maselli and had an experience I won't forget. As I entered I heard a man spewing swear words with uneducated drawl. I was pretty surprised to see that man (tall, wearing a Maselli hat, mask on his chin) was behind the counter spreading his opinions to two women that are also employees of Maselli. He started with "It's complete f-ing BS, they don't know what the f they're f-ing talking about." As the women standing on the other side of the counter listened in what I can only assume was agreement he continued with "Back in the day they treated those people good, fed them and made their lives f-ing good." That wasn't all he said, but it was crystal clear that he was sharing his views about the current racial tensions in America, and shockingly, how slaves were treated well by their owners. I couldn't believe it. When the three of them finally acknowledged me the man asked me if I was ready, and I told him I just had a return. One of the ladies (the fat one) silently and quickly pointed to the other counter. Stupid me - I was in the wrong line. The man met me at the other counter, and without an ounce of customer service or general niceness he refunded me for the item, and that was that. Looking at this poor excuse of a man I so badly wanted to shatter the plastic separating us and beat the racism right out of his face. It is incomprehensible to me how someone would believe that slaves were treated well, let alone say it out loud at work. Clearly no amount of talking, training or even a broken nose could make him understand that racism is a poison that has plagued our country since the beginning and continues to fester everywhere, even behind the counter at a little hardware store in Petaluma, California. I have been to Maselli a few times and have never been greeted with a smile, or any real interest in helping me. I just accepted that as part of your brand, you know the 'Old Fashioned Way' of running a business. I am sure the likeminded regulars appreciate that sort of service. What I experienced recently was beyond outrageous and pissed me off to the point of writing this review. I might come back sometime to check and see if that dirt bag is still working there, but I won't be buying anything. Maselli has a very well organized 65 year collection of salvaged stuff. Great place to find inspiration for projects and find "discarded treasures" to repurpose for DIY projects. I recently built a rolling sign/menu/planter cart, as a gift for a friend. The salvaged steel rock screen mesh for the trellis, and the steel hand rail for the menu frame were some of my finds at Maselli. A maker friend of mine took his girlfriend on a Valentines date/tour of the salvage yard....Rust & Romance! I have spent many days and many hours there, and have yet to see everything on the 4 acres of salvaged stuff. Plus there is a great Mexican restaurant/store down the street. After buying your rusty post hole digger you can have pozole for lunch. read more

This is where you go if you need metal. I couldn't believe how much they had of not only what I needed but every other variation of metal imaginable as well. And if you were like me you might think ok they have a lot of metal but so do most scrap/salvage yards. May be true but this place is organized well. To be able to organize the amount of product they have to the extent they have is really impressive. I was able to find and pick exactly what I needed, which was rather specific and not common everywhere. I matched my project almost perfectly and will have to make only 2 minor cuts to fit exact. I never expected that out of salvage. If I wasn't able to find what I did in salvage they also had brand new product on hand with an option to cut to size. I didn't see the cost on that inventory/service but I got my salvage pieces for a very fair price and left spending less than I estimated and with more metal too. So in conclusion, this is where you go if you need metal. read more

Terrible service and high prices! The final straw with me came a couple of days ago, when I brought my chainsaw in for servicing. I rang the counter bell 1, 2, 3 times before this guy came from the back room very slowly & said: "Yeah?" He looked like he just came out of his Mom's basement playing video games with food all over his chin. I told him my situation and he said: "Uhh, OK, but it'll take about 2 months!" What a joke! At the pace he was walking no wonder it'll take 2 months! Is this the only mechanic they have? Later, I called to speak to the manager. This is for the salvage aspect; I did not shop in the hardware store. Very large, generally well organized large yard of tons of stuff to look over for inspiration or if looking for a particular used item. Contrary to some other reviews, a fellow guided me to the particular items I wanted to check out, and then told me to find him or go into store to have someone radio in for help if necessary. Friendly, took care of things promptly when I had decided. Love that I could get some angle iron for one project and then find my unusual little cast iron/porcelain sink at same place. I don't know how one would price shop on unique items that no one else would have organized and held onto for years, just for me to find, but the price was very reasonable! I will most certainly return when I have time to simply meander about and see what grabs me. They have totally different sort of salvage than does Heritage, but they complement each other perfectly and are really close to each other for when you need that used door or window or wood detail. read more

There is an old man in the scrap yard that is total !@%hole. This guy is a nightmare to deal with, grumpy old bastard that make you wish you had just got back in your car or truck and driven up to Homedepot. I will never shop at their salvage yard again. It's a salvage yard that charges like everything is new. And their service is RUDE!! I used to travel from Folsom to Petaluma a couple times a year but their prices just kept going up and service quality down. Last time I wanted to buy an old rusty wrench to rehab so I googled it and saw a restored one on eBay for $225. When M&S priced the rusty wrench out they used that same eBay wrench as a baseline and said $125 for the rusty one....and said that was a deal. Of course, months later, that same restored wrench is still on eBay and steadily going down. I offered $50 for the rusty one instead of $125 but walked away when the guy in the yard said "this isn't a grab sale". Funny thing is, they are turning away so much good money. I have seen the same stuff there year after year. Like the crate of oversized Williams wrenches Out in the rain. Sell the stuff for what it is.....scrap/salvage. Never again!!! read more

And they still hand write their receipts! So I brought in a chair with 2 metal legs missing. Talked with Jim M, one of the owners. It wasnt an easy fix, but I liked the chair. He quoted me a good price & I left it for a few weeks. Picked up the chair today - beautiful! Turned out to take twice as much time (they lost money on the deal) but they still honored the price. Went in for a mower part, which they don't carry. They have A TON of things for sale and I would've browsed around if it was allowed. Two reps working the front counter, wearing masks, except one had only his mouth covered, and the other (pregnant woman) had her mask pulled down below her chin the whole time I was in the shop. Not behind a plexiglass barrier or anything. Just blatantly disrespecting protocol and safety of her customers. So we left without buying the other item we had in hand to buy. read more

Well, there is so much to say about Maselli's! The people here are what make this place so wonderful. I believe Mike retired but Paul and his crew will help you with any project you may have. The thing I like about this place is that they have things you just can't find at a standard hardware supply store. They have over 5 acres of things! 15,000 sq. feet is inside. They even had some really small stainless steel screws that I couldn't find anywhere . I knew I should of came here first instead of calling around. Unfortunately there are only two faults. They are not open on the weekends and the prices are a little steep. But sometimes you have to pay more for good quality. read more

I really want to shop local, and they have some cool junk, but I just can't go there anymore. 1. Everything is overpriced. You literally will pay the same price for gears and chains etc. at the fancy antique stores on Kentucky Street. No joke. I guess if that's what the fancy junk market will bear, more power to them. Just don't expect any deals. 2. The older guy working the yard (one of the owners) was really unpleasant and actually called me dishonest to my face AFTER I went ahead and bought and paid for six items because his son quoted me a price $1.50 cheaper. It's sad because it's the kind of place I *really* want to like, but you can't actually insult the customers and expect them to come back. Try craigslist, army surplus stores, garage sales, the other junk yards and even eBay first. Hopefully after the old guy retires, his sons (nicer) will make changes. read more

I have been a customer at Maselli's for over three years. All along I have known that their prices are always higher than pretty much all other place's. But they have cool stuff, I always found it hard to go there without buying something that I did't plan on; my ammo boxes, machete, huge duffel bags, gloves,rope, moving blankets, etc. etc. I bought there. They also carry a good selection of steel tubing which I use for my business and I enjoy not having to push a heavy cart around for miles. Until this last time I have always been helped, in the industrial steel department, by an older gentleman, who, although not effusively friendly, always got my orders right and delivered them to my truck in a business-like fashion. This last time I was helped by a younger man that I hadn't seen before. I asked for 30 feet of 1 and 1/2 inch square tubing, 30 feet of 1 and 1/4 inch and 30 feet of 1/2 inch, all cut into 10 foot sections. I then went to the front of the store, purchased an expensive power tool and replacement disks for it, running my total bill to the many multiple hundreds. When I went out to my truck the ordered steel was there and when I began securing it I noticed that I had only 2, 10 foot sections of the 1/2 inch tubing, I looked at the bill and I had been charged for the 30 feet and 2 cuts. I went inside and pointed it out and the missing section was brought out. When I got home I noticed that I had been given 30 feet of 1 inch tubing and no 1 and 1/2 inch (I had assumed the one and a quarter was the one and a half and that the one inch was the one and one quarter when I was securing it to my truck, after all they still did differ by 1/4 inch) I manufacture furniture for a living and I go to Maselli's almost weekly to buy cutting disks, steel, welding wire, grinding disks, carriage bolts, etc, etc. I have known Luke ( a member of the Maselly family that works there) for 3 years, I have invited him repeatedly to come shoot at the ranch as he is an enthusiast of the sport, I have talked to him about his projects many times, last week I commissioned a custom design and manufacture of a steel brand from him, the day that I bought the steel tubing in question, he, my nephew and I were chatting about his upcoming trip to Italy and his friend's trip through South East Asia similar to the one my nephew just returned from. When I went back in the next day (on my way to a camping and fishing trip I do yearly with my nephew who lives overseas) the girl at the counter said that she could not accept the return of cut steel but, as I insisted that it was their mistake, she politely said that I should talk to the employee who cut the steel and called it over the radio as I made my way to the back. The employee greeted me, did not openly admit his mistake, but did, in no fashion or form, attempt to deny it. Very promptly Luke, who would have heard the call over his radio, came over, did not look my way, did not acknowledge me as someone he knew or even nod a greeting and stated "we do not accept returns on cut steel". I responded that I understood the difficulty but that it was their mistake. He refused again. I told him that I had even been shorted a whole section, pointing out that mistakes had clearly been made. He said the missing section had been given to me after I had pointed it out and that I should have measured the steel before leaving and that it was not their problem. I again stated that it was their mistake whether I had spotted it right away or not. He stated again that it was my responsibility to measure before leaving. This last statement being ridiculous, with his demeanor being as it was, his overwhelmingly intransigent position and his looking at me sideways out of the corner of his eye I had no choice but to tell him to go f@#c himself and turned around and walked away. I then, embarrassingly, had to put up with him following me all the way out to my truck and begging me to let him remediate the situation. Pathetic. My nephew said: "I have been visiting for only a month and I've come here four or five times with you, this should have been a no-brainer for them" I guess it takes at least some brains to figure out even a no-brainer. You can imagine that that really ruined my first day of camping and fishing. You can also imagine that I will now buy my steel elsewhere. On the bright side, it will be cheaper. read more

I went there for the first time yesterday. One of my scrap items was taken back I thought to be cut, instead they changed the price on me. They changed it from $1 a foot to $2 a foot. I mentioned this and the guy was so rude to me. He never explained why except to say "it could have been priced a hundred years ago." I had about $75 worth of goods to buy. After he continued to lack any form of manners I left the store without buying anything. He could have kindly explained about the price change. In fact, he told me I had asked for a price on this metal. I said no, I had asked for 6 feet to be cut. He treated me as if I was beneath him. I've been going to Masselli's for more than 40 years, primarily searching the back lot for treasures. I will comment only on that aspect of the business. First. Leave your attitude at home. If you are over privileged, and in a hurry.. WTF are you doing in the middle of a salvage yard ? Second, the major part of their salvage biz has to do with buying huge lots of stuff, and selling much of it as scrap, and keeping part of it to sell retail for specialty users.. that would be me..and hopefully you. Third, if you are there and don't know what you are looking at, don't know what it's worth or how hard it is to find.. don't be surprised if somebody there eventually gets tired of you. Fourth, If you haggle, and you can, at least know what the hell you are talking about. Firth, Petaluma aint cow town so much anymore.. it costs a LOT to sort, and store all that stuff, and perhaps keep it around for 20 years until some lucky soul who needs it finds it... that tends to make it more expensive than if they had not invested their time, knowledge, effort and land to having your prize on hand. Fourth - like with all used things.. what you can See, Hear, Feel, and Smell is what you get. I bought a motor that was totally frozen up.. but I was glad to get it.. being a kick start 1/2 HP antique washing machine gas motor. To most folks it was junk.. to me a nice project that is coming along fine. They have some nice stuff you cant find this side of god knows where. To preface, I've only been here once -- but the experience was terrible enough that I will avoid this place at all costs in the future. When it became clear that I didn't want to patronize this establishment, the employee started harassing me and using intimidation tactics. My major complaint involves their "proud partner", The Petaluma Junk Company. I called Maselli & Sons and asked a very simple question -- how much do you pay for Copper #1 scrap? The lady on the phone told me she could not answer that question, that I needed to bring the scrap to the location in order to get a price. So, I brought the scrap to the junk yard and a seemingly friendly old man showed me where to unload it. After we weighed out the ~60 pounds of copper, the old man gave me a price. This is where it all went downhill. The price was extremely lowballed, less than half what I would have expected. I politely asked him if he was sure that was the right price and he immediately got defensive, saying, "Oh yeah that's the right price. We give you cash right away. Other places give you a check and make you wait for two week." Etc etc. At this point I told the man, "Well, if that's the case. I think I'll go see if someone else will offer a higher price." Old Man: "What do you mean?? You can't back down now! Here's the price list. You see! You should have called Maselli's and asked them before you got here!" Me: "Actually, I did call and they told me they didn't know the prices. She told me I had to come here and find out. I'm sorry sir, I'm going to go somewhere else." Old Man: "They do have the prices! They have this same sheet here! You can't back out now! You've wasted my time. I've got better sh*t to do than deal with you." Me: "I wish the lady would have told me the prices on the phone. It would have saved us both this time. I'm going to take my scrap and leave now." Old Man: "Yeah you better get your stuff and get out of here. I don't wanna see you around!
