Thanks to Yelp I found this little gem. When I travel, I've added local bookstores to my places to visit. I loved this little quaint store. Slightly disorganized, with books, DVDs, and CDs here and there, I absolutely loved it. And what amazing prices!!!! They had a little bit of everything, including both paperback and hardback. Many of the hardbacks were only $1!!!! Considering you're going to pay $20-$30 for a new one, that's a heck of a steal. I managed to get 7 books for $16. I would have bought more but had to buy a bag just to get all of these home as it was. Support local! read more

Friends Book Shop - All of this for $16! - Bookstores Near Me - Stamford, Connecticut

I'll preface this review by stating the obvious: I am a book connoisseur. I read books like other people drink water. If I'm in the bath? Reading. Cooking? Reading. In bed? Reading. At lunch? Reading. I love books and I love people who are passionate about books. The Friends Book Shop gives me the best of both. First and foremost - it's a decent sized space. It's in the main branch of the Ferguson Library, just to the left when you enter the building. Upon entering you'll see that they have rows and rows of fiction books to the left; divided by general fiction and then segmented into mystery, romance, sci-fi, and young adult. To the immediate right upon entering there is a very generous section of childrens books, early readers, and grade-level books, including many popular books series (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Magic Treehouse, Babysitters Club, to name a few of what I've seen...) All of the books in the adult fiction section are in alphabetical order by authors last name, with an end section of advance reader editions. I'm not sure about the children's section, because I don't browse there too often, but from what I've seen I would think it's similarly maintained. Beyond the fiction section they have a decent section of poetry, anthologies, classics, art, cooking, world history, US history, religion, gardening, and foreign language materials. They also have rarer edition books closer to the register, for those who appreciate older/harder to find books. Most of the books I've seen or purchased are paperbacks ranging from $1-$4 and hardbacks ranging from $2-$6. Very rarely do I see a hardback fiction book priced much higher than that. In addition, the books are not beat-up, garage sale leftovers covered in dust and one cobweb away from being a relic. Most, if not all, of these books are current, in-demand, and gently-loved condition. (Side note: They also have baskets filled with mass market paperbacks that they sell 3 for $1. Those are a nice find if you're looking for a quick, easy read on the cheap.) To be perfectly honest I spend quite a lot of money in this shop. I usually go once a week and spend anywhere from $20 - $50 each trip. I think about it like this: 1. I would spend, easily, five times as much on these same books at Barnes & Noble. There's no question about it - this is the easier shop on your wallet. 2. Many of the volunteers now recognize me and greet me by name (or at least say - hey it's you again!) and will chat with me about my day, life, job, etc. I love that type of friendly, community driven atmosphere. 3. This is the biggest reason I shop here: The money from the book shop all goes back into the library and is used to fund services and programs for the community. The library does SO MUCH to give back to the community. Whether it's childrens programs, movies, art events, ESL classes, assistance with taxes; you name it - they likely have some sort of involvement in it. So! If you're like me and you have more books than you know what to do with... You'll love this bookshop and I'm quite certain you'll find some treasures of your own (either for yourself or someone else). read more

This is a cute little book shop next to the library. They have some good sales at times but usually don't have the author I'm looking for. Starbucks is no longer next door which is a bummer because I would come in to get a drink and then go to the book shop to browse. They have a great selection of recipe books. read more

A great find in lower Fairfield County. Beautiful used books at great prices ($1 to $5 each), and a pleasure to shop in this light filled and well organized shop just inside the front door of the public library. The Starbucks next door features some of the books on sale, too. read more

They have a decent selection of old library books, duplicates, etc. I would love to see an older selection. But it's definitely worth a browse if you're in the area and grow tired of the larger bookstores. read more

Love the Friends book storeS! There are two!!! One at the downtown library and one at the Harry Bennett branch. Both are filled with gems. There are always new authors for me to discover as well as old favorites to rely on. And the prices can not be beaten! I buy oodles of kids books for my nieces and nephew - mostly all for a dollar a book. YES - A DOLLAR. The inventory changes daily so there is always something new to find. Oh, and when I'm done with any of my books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, etc. I can donate them back. How many other retailers help you declutter your house? read more
