I'm happy to see a new grocery store finally opened up in this spot! They have a great mixture of Latin, Asian, middle eastern and American hipster store products, which I love! The reduced price produce you need to eat same day, $0.99 for strawberries, they are very sweet and ripe. But I also got a bunch of organic broccoli for 0.99 that will last a while. My favorite was their large varieties of fun drinks! I bought everything in my photo for just $18. A great place to shop after hitting the gym down the block! Ok I just cut into peach it was rotted! Adel is great! Excellent customer service. I love supporting small businesses and Fruit Barn definitely deserves it. They have fresh basil here (unlike Whole Foods a few blocks away haha). This grocery store actually shuttered back in 2019 pre-pandemic. There were many bottlenecks on the new owners reopening this store, they actually remodeled the storefront to look more modern and unfortunately had to tear it down after some busybody in the neighborhood decided to complain to the city. Fast forward 3 years they reverted back to the original storefront and reopened for business. One thing I missed is the fruit and vegetable puns on the back wall. The store was very well remodeled and clean. The shelves are all well stocked and their inventory is fresh. On my visit, I came to buy pasta to make dinner and they have a huge selection available. The pricing is very competitive for convenience at a walking distance from home. The produce here is also very fresh and they have items at reduced price to move their inventory faster. There is also a flower shop on the side that is also run by Fruit Barn. The staff here are very friendly and are open to feedback on making the store better. Overall a win for the neighborhood, as this increases competition for the grocery market on Ocean Ave. read more

Fruit Barn is in the Ingleside neighborhood. It is a great spot to pick up stables especially affordable produce & even some organic produce. Small Bulk bin w/ staples. Organic pasta, hummus, & salsa. No non-dairy yogurt. No tempeh. Yet bulk tofu that sells for 4 blocks for $1.00 which was very affordable. They had no refrigerated soy milk yet they had the smaller size non-refrigerated non-dairy milks including soy milk, almond milk, & rice milk. For speciality items in the neighborhood there is a Whole Foods a short walk from here yet this is a good place to pick up produce & some staples. read more

I enjoy going to Fruit Barn to pick up staples and last minute groceries. They usually have most things that I need, and at very reasonable prices. It's convenient being able to get produce, non-dairy milk, eggs, noodles, oils, snacks, spices, and more in one spot without the crowds or crazy mark-up. Let me tell you something. When I was in college I wished that the old Fruit Barn was open as late as this place is: 1. The food selection is varied and has enough knick-knacks, produce and fruits that take care of the type of shopping that, were you go a few blocks up to Whole Foods, would be too much money for what you spent for. 2. The softdrink beverage selection is curious, novel and worthy to try - sure there are the usual staples like Red Bull since this street and the entire Inglside District is a bit of a "college town" but otherwise it's just right. 2.1 Imported Italian mineral water! I know some annoying moralists are going to say "Oh yeah typical, latter-day gilded age San Franciscan concerns. pass." No don't pass you schmuck because if you've had to deal with drinking Crystal Geyser (which tastes like tap water with a hint of low-grade l-methamphetamine which you can bullshit and say "Rosemary infused tap water", by Crystal Geyser), you too would be happy to something like imported Italian mineral water or Gerolsteiner™ 3. Cereals! Perhaps the selection is not like Whole Foods that usually tastes like cardboard and is approved by the Health Council of Canada (365 brands are imported from Canada so go figure) but they make it up with a greater variety of Bob's Red Mill dry cereals which is all you need instead of store-brands that all taste like hospital food. After all you have the need for sugar speed! 4. The service - it's always been a chill place to shop and I really encourage people to come by more often to buy stuff here because the people that work here are some of the friendliest that I've ever met and the most easy going. If there was a song to describe the place at times it'd be the song "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" by Bing Crosby Every neighborhood in San Francisco that's not entirely directly connected to the main arteries of the city (Mission St., Market St., et al) deserves at least one local natural foods store and grocer that people should support. The Fruit Barn has been the savior of my stomach, and budget, since I love to gorge myself on fresh produce whenever possible. Everyone working there is so ridiculously kind and helpful, I feel like I'm visiting friends every time I stop by. The only downside is that you do need to shop carefully, as quality can sometimes be a bit lacking. This store is just what Ocean Avenue needs. For such a small space I was impressed to see the wonderful variety of products including Latino, Asian, European. I was looking for risotto rice and they had 3 kinds! That's more than Whole Foods carries. The hours are long, 7am-9pm, so I can pick up items after work. It's time I chime in and voice my appreciation for the fruit barn! They are so well stocked with plenty of great healthy foods --so much less expensive than Safeway! I can buy a week's worth of produce & non-meat groceries for $20 or less. My one gripe about the place is that it's really cramped inside. It makes it very hard to navigate through the store with an arm-load of veggies. Fruitbarn has become a part of my weekly rounds. Hurray for cheerful mom-pops! They make me a very happy shopper! Note: They take credit card but only for orders over $10. I have frequently found myself scrambling to add enough to add up to $10; so get cash, first, if you just need a few items. read more

OK... so this place probably deserves 3.5 stars, but I didn't want to give it the extra .5. It's a very convenient location in the neighborhood. With that said however, a convenien[t] store should have items that someone would run to a convenient store for: creamer, sliced sourdough, ice cream, etc. Besides not carrying these items, they hardly have any organic fruits and veggies, which doesn't make sense given that it a) is a fruit market and b) is a fruit market in SF. All this to say that I will definitely frequent it since it is the closest fruit & veggie market--I just wish they'd carry more organic ones. read more

This is a quaint local produce market, you can get your basics from. The produce is more extensive though. This is where I filter out of Whole Foods to find less popular produce like chayote and radishes. Sometimes, they have organics WF doesn't too. No organic tomatoes at WF right now, but Fruit Barn has organic Romas! They also have a nice selection of live herbs too, and the prices are reasonable. read more

I've got a lot of love for this place because it's my neighborhood grocer. But that's just what it is: a small grocery store with your basic produce at a decent price. You probably won't be wowed by the freshness or the selection, and this isn't a specialty mart you'd go out of your way for. If you live within walking distance, however, you'll be glad you can always pick up onions, apples, zucchinis, milk and more for a fair price. Plus, it's a much better choice than the place down the street, which has more expensive produce and awful service. That being said, the produce here can be a hit or miss. This place doesn't seem to move products at a fast enough pace, so you're going to find things here like green potatoes and moldy onions. Generally, though, this little grocer is dependable enough and I can usually just pick the fresher-looking stuff while avoiding the bad apples (har). Parting words: - Credit card minimum is $5. - I've seen a homeless man use his hand to scoop out and eat the bulk nuts. Buy at your own risk. - To management: Please keep the lemons and limes inside. The go to spot. First off, the greek boss is ridiculous. Like Francois D say's below, his humor is dry as hell but It's funny. Sometimes I don't even know what he's saying but he's a pretty awesome dude. I talk to him when I'm there. Dude is a machine by the way. He told me that he usually has to get back to the store by 3 in the am to get the day's produce and doesn't get any sleep till 11....m-f. Pretty rough I'd say. Does that tell us something about locally owned retail businesses? I think the story is much the same elsewhere all around the city. Another reason we should support local businesses? Yes I'd say. The produce is pretty rockin' too. I always get broccoli cause it's my favorite veggie and it's always good and cheap there plus the pasta selection is pretty cool. I am such a produce and fruit slut. This place is a mom and pops grocery store which sells pretty much all I can ask for. (almost) A major plus is that it is 2 mins walking distance from my apartment too. So why do I go here instead of the bigger Trader Joe's, Safeway, etc? Because their produce and fruits are ridiculously cheap and fresh. They sell alfalfa sprouts for under $1.50, avocados for under a $1.00 each. The list goes on. The only thing I don't see myself buying here is diary products, and meat. I am sure that they are also fresh, but I prefer to buy these things at bigger establishments. Have been going to this place for 5+ years. Used to love this place with its great selection of produce and prices. With the recent change in management, produce selection and quality has gone way down. It seems like they are focusing more on non-perishables, adding some sugary cereals and sodas. Know your audience and build what makes them keep coming to this place! There is no need for another store selling those items, with Target and Walgreens so close by. What a shame. read more

I really hope the best for this little shop, I love the location and the prices by safeway, target, walgreens and whole foods are not very far. These mom and pop shops are what keep this area a "family" neighborhood and not a Financial District. With that in mind, they do have reasonable prices, fresh produce and what's more amazing is that they sell feta cheese by the pound which is rare nowadays from family owned produce markets. However, I do see a lot of potential in the store location. I feel like this store could hold more products and Produce and they have lots of unused space. read more

This business epitomizes one of the treasures of San Francisco: neighborhood merchants. They always greet with a smiling face, sincerely warm. When I was in the hospital and then recovering at home, they would ask my housemate about my progress. We stop by at least 4 or 5 times a week. A good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables (some of the best mangos I've found in the Bay Area), some good buys on dried fruit, nuts and grains. Great prices on Santa Cruz juices (usually a special at the front counter on the larger sizes). Some nice choices of preserves and canned goods, an amazing array of teas, and one of my favorites there are at the counter: they are apricot rolls. Dried apricot rolled into a stick and lightly dusted with coconut... yummmm! A must-try for apricot lovers. read more

What happened to my beloved Fruit Barn? I feel absolutely terrible writing this, but apparently ownership has changed and the selection of produce and other groceries has become very limited. What once was a storefront full of fresh, seasonal produce has been replaced with empty bins or ones with semi-rotting fruits and vegetables. The interior doesn't have much to offer too; just more empty bins with nothing to sell. When I stopped by today, they didn't even have any dairy products or bread. This place had such a good run, but I don't see it being in business for much longer. Super sad day for me seeing this once wonderful neighborhood store in this condition. :( read more

Fruit Barn is a cute little neighborhood market that I often stop at to pick up produce on the way home from class or the gym but unfortunately their hours don't work well with my schedule. I think they're either open until 6 or 7pm, but I'm hoping they'll have spring/summer hours because I hate driving by as they're packing up the outdoor display. The selection is nice and there's lots of organic stuff, just not so much organic produce. Still, it's definitely a better option than Safeway produce with lower prices, but you can find anything packaged here cheaper at TJ's. $10 plastic minimum. read more

We were so lucky to have our beloved Fruit Barn with fair prices, fresh produce, dairy products etc. There is very limited amount of produce, I tried to grab some eggs but put it down cause it smelled like mold in the refrigerator.
