The produce section is large and their ethnic food section has quite a few items I didn't expect to find at a discount supermarket. Prices seem to be generally lower than most supermarkets out there. Their bread section I used to hate but it seems to have improved a lot in the past while. The place was newly renovated in the past two years and they even have useful albeit somewhat unexpected services like Western Union money transfers. I give it four star rating, not quite the ideal grocery store for me but definitely quality for price.

The veggies are always fresh and super cheap. (Big bag of spinach for 2,99$?!) they have produce that's already sorted out for you (ex. Melons that are halved and skinned). Their bakery breads were a little hard the times I went, so I've never bought some, but maybe I'm just uptight about bread, because a lot of people were buying it. They have a small section of processed meat/cheese. Prices are acceptable. The place is rather small, but they carry a lot of products. The staff is super friendly and checkout is always quick. It's also right by a bus stop and the metro! The only thing I'd like is if there were a wider selection of veggies, but given the limited amount of space they have, I understand that they can't have everything. All the basics are there though. If you live in the area and appreciate cheap/fresh produce, go go go!

Yes, it's grungy in there, and smells weird, and is full of salty people, but I was able to get bags of groceries that fed me for an entire week for about $10. Admittedly that was a while ago, and I was a vegetarian back then, and I weighed less than 100 lbs, but hey I lived to tell this story. I was back at Segal's this past week, for a stroll down memory lane, and with the exception of some new security cameras and TV screens, it's exactly how I remembered it. It's still poorly lit. The refrigerated sections still have those yellowing plastic curtains. The floors are still dirty and it still smelled weird. Prices are a bit higher, but I would say keeping with inflation. They stock a few more organic items now. The bulk items used to just be in open tubs (like at Bulk Barn, minus the coverings), but are now in plastic garbage/recycling bins, with lids, lol. The "scoops" are plastic water jugs that are tied to the bins. Most are cracked or broken. I found this amusing. This place has apparently been around since 1927. Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but I have a soft spot in my heart for its "this is who I am, warts and all, take it or leave it" attitude.

There's a prepared foods counter in the back and a bakery and it's always fun to come by to see what they have on the offering. Apparently they have daily lunch specials as well. I find Europeans eat seasonally (i.e you don't get real strawberries in January...) and their foods reflect this. Autumn usually means more desserts and baked goods with apples or stone fruits for instance. Last time I came, they had some fresh open-faced plum dessert I have never seen anywhere else before in Montreal and picked up a few pieces. It was amazing. Champfleury is a famous art critic and novelist, thus, the name of this butcher. Apparently there is a french "intellectualist" behind this business.. LOL. I find this butcher to be the perfect "yuppie" butcher. Has all the markings of being "yuppie-fied". Has artisanal beers, artisanal meats, charcuterie (also artisanal). Will also, cut a carcass in front of you if you want. But the most important thing of all, that makes this butcher more yuppie than most... is the fact that they have a chalk board that shows you the name and area of where they get each specific meat, locally sourced and super organically grown and farmed. The tourtiere came out of the oven a few moments after we arrived; it was amazing!!!! Go there and order it: it is a traditional marché established in 1959, so authentic!!!
