3/3/2026 came here for dinner after spending the day Antiquing. Fuentes is just a block or two from our condo and we've never been here as we are new to San Angelo from Michigan. The restaurant is clean, the decor is nice, ample seating and very friendly staff. 4pm on a Tuesday we were seated quickly and probably about 4 other tables w/guest. I ordered nachos and my husband went for the beef burrito w/ beans and rice. FYI, I always order nachos as you can see from my Mexican restaurant reviews. My husband really liked his choice especially since they added the green sauce. Now for the nachos, a bit disappointing as they just looked plain compared to other nachos pictured in my previous reviews. We will come back but not sure what I will try. read more

"CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK'S DAY OUR WAY" Yesterday was St Patrick's Day, you know, the day everyone thinks they are green and goes out to drink Green Beer. Well, my Lovely Green Wife and I also went out to drink Green Beer. Now remember what I have always said; "Green is good for you". So, that means that Green Beer is also good for you. We both are decked out in our Green and off we went. Well, it not only happens to be St. Patrick's Day, but in San Angelo they are having a Pub & Grub Crawl with 15 different places to crawl too on the map that we have. We can do that - so off we went. We parked right in the middle of where they show five locations. We started our crawling and guess what, we only see three locations here. Two of the five are empty buildings. Anyway, we crawled across the street and enjoyed a couple of Green Beers before having dinner. We walked down the street to get something to eat. No sense in crawling anymore, we didn't want to look stupid. On the corner is Fuentes Cafe Downtown for our early dinner. It's just before 4pm and this place has a lot of people here. I bet they thought it was the Pub & Grub Crawl and found out it was the day before - but who would do a thing like that. We were shown to a table and our Server, Darla, took our drink order. Two Green Beers to start. We looked over the menu while our Green Beers are being poured. Darla returned with their Warm Chips and Red Spicy Sauce for you to enjoy. We have been here before and we loved those chips and sauce. The Chips are thin and crispy and that sauce is just-right spicy. Our Green Beers arrived and they are a nice color of green, these really must be good for you. MMmmmmmmmm greenlyliciousness. Now it's time to order. My Wife is going with their "Guiso Burrito"; Large Warm Flour Tortilla stuffed with Guiso Stew Meat simmered in a seasoned sauce. Requested the burrito to be no topping of sauce. I am having "Grilled Fish Tacos" (three); Each has a strip of Grilled Fish Fillet, placed in soft Corn Tortilla with Guacamole, Cabbage & Pico de Gallo. Served with Rice & Refried Beans. While we waited we enjoying those Chips, Sauce and those Cold Green Beers. Soon our food arrived and my Wife's Guiso Burrito is Huge, with Mighty-Meaty-Chucks of Stew Meat inside. The presentation of my Fish Tacos is very impressive. They are all three stuffed to the top, with Pico de Gallo & Guac on a separate plate. Each taco also has it's own Lime Wedge and I squeezed them all dry on each taco, and topped them off even more with the Pico & Guac. The flavor of each one was Tacolicious with the fish being perfectly grilled. These are really, really gooooood. The Rice and Refried Beans were also very fresh and flavorful. I Love Tacos and these were the right choice for me. My Wife LoVeD her Guiso Burrito and said the meat was very Tendertastylicious and loving that sauce. She let me have a couple of bites and I totally agree, this was some good stuff. Fuentes Cafe Downtown was the right choice for us for our Grub and we didn't have to crawl here to enjoy some Mighty-Meaty chunks of Guiso Stew Meat and those Fresh Fish Tacos. Darla earned the "Dollar-Bow-Tie" Award for going 'above-n-beyond' the norm. She also wanted Nancy in the picture I took, so we obliged. When we left, we walked to our truck, not going to crawl when we don't have to. Just for the record, the map I copied does show 15 places for the Pub & Grub Crawl but two of those five shown on this street are permanently closed. So, it wasn't my fault, but one day I will learn how to read the small fine print showing the actual date. But on my behalf, in my youth I could of crawled to all fifteen locations, but I'm glad it was only one we crawled into. This was a very fun outing that we both enjoyed celebrating St. Patrick's Day. It's Mexican American food. The manager literally said we can't substitute American for Mexican. Asking to sub rice for fries because my kid is really finicky And they wouldn't do it. Wouldn't it be easier to put a scoop of rice on the plate then to drop a side of fries? Not really trying to be there for their customers. Asking me to pay an additional $2.50 for a side of rice. Armentas did it no question and so did La Esperanza. I guess We'll stick to them. Greedy in my opinion. read more

We went tonight for my bday dinner and the service was awful. Our server seemed to be avoiding us, we constantly had to ask other servers to grab him, spent 70% of our meal with no drinks refilled, had to order our appetizer with a different server we flagged down. Asked for an extra tortilla (that we never got) because we only received two for a huge plate of food (the fajitas). We go quite often and every time we have this server hes rude and we go without. He's always working the bar area it seems. This was our last time which is so unfortunate. We wanted to get dessert for my birthday but just ended up leaving because we figured we wouldnt bother him anymore. read more

Environment was pleasant however the server combined the ticket for everyone after being asked up front not to so one individual was left to pay for everything on spot. Ties for top spot to go have Mexican in town. I got different dishes here so can't compare directly with the other spot I've been to so far. This place in on the same block I live so getting there is no issue at all. John the owner is awesome. Way cool family story of his business now on 36 years strong. The food is delicious, the plomar cocktail is solid and the salsa is super fresh and flavorful. The beef casavala and the steak al a Mexicana dishes are both big winners in my book. Get them if your lost in what to order and you won't be let down. John walks around the place speaking to all his regular patrons and they all know who he is clearly. So neat to see a place that has such a close loyalty to its owner and the owner to its customers. read more

It offers great food in a great location making things the best. They serve a lot of Tex-Mex dishes at a reasonable price with freshly brewed sweet/unsweet tea. Everything you order is like $15 or less. You cannot beat the prices offered at this establishment. They are closed on Sunday though, so keep that in mind. read more

This restaurant knows how to treat their customers. Seated me without any wait. My drink order was taken promptly. Chips and a mildly smoky spicy salsa brought to the table. When the waitress came back to take my order, she clarified that enchiladas had ground beef, and told me about the specials when she first handed me the menus. I ordered the tortilla soup, kinda a always have to try a small cup of this if done well this soup is great, it was great. The meal also came with salad or coleslaw. The enchiladas had a choice of 3 sauces I chose the chili sauce. The food had great flavor, served hot and delicious. The beans and rice tasted like a home cooked meal. It was super home cooked meal type of experience. The owner Mr. Fuentes was here and he was asking everyone how there meals were shaking there hands and getting there name and where they were from. I hardly ever see this in restaurants, it makes such a huge difference on me wanting to come back to a place. They make a connection with there customers. The service was great. The food was enough for 2 people, so come hungry. Don't fill up on chips. Thanks for a great food experience. I hope to come back before a leave San Angelo. read more

As some may know I only review the top and the bottom of the list. Fuentes is by far the top of San Angelo. I as usual at at the bar. By far the best food in 3 weeks eating in town. Carah was great. Everyone was wearing masks. Owner ( John Fuentes) was at the door greeting everyone with his mask on. 36 years in the family deserves everyone to ask why and how. My mom just moved to San Angelo. We all love Mexican food and this was one of our first to find. Situated on a corner in the downtown area, one is subject to all the flavor of downtown including old buildings, the classic old town feel, and sometimes frustrating parking. The interior is busy with something stuck here and there, and lots of decorations to add atmosphere. The chips and salsa are good. The salsa had a nice zing to it. Not so much hot, just spicy. We ordered a bowl of Queso. Not recommended. The Queso was really bland and simply had no flavor. I ordered the Chicken a la Mexicana on one visit and the deluxe Mexican plate on the other visit. Both were good and I could reorder either one. The rice was standard but the beans were rather bland, not sure but what they could have been powdered beans. The guacamole was the kind I like (meaning it was just avocados without the tomatoes or onions); small portion though, but tasty. Wait staff was good on both visits. My husband and I have just left our first and last trip to Fuentes. It was completely underwhelming and disappointing. The food was edible but nothing remarkable. We arrived just after 3 pm and were promptly seated, but everything else after that went downhill. Service was ridiculously slow - we waited at least five minutes for our drink orders to be taken, then another ten for the drinks to be delivered to our table (two unsweet iced teas, nothing fancy or from the bar). Our appetizers didn't come out until our entrees did (30 minutes after we ordered), and by that time the queso that came with our tapatillos had congealed and all of our food save my husband's fajitas was lukewarm. My burrito wasn't delivered with rice or beans, and I'm fairly sure my husband's "steak" fajitas were actually burgers or were at least supplemented with hamburger. The guacamole tasted like stuff I buy at the grocery store, and the shells on the tapatillos tasted stale. All in all, we spent almost 50 dollars, and it wasn't at all worth the price. We weren't the only ones to suffer the effects of slow service. There was actually a party of two who had been seated when we got there who still hadn't received their order by the time ours came out, and they opted to walk out rather than wait longer for their food. I don't blame them. The only two pieces of positive feedback I can offer is that the shrimp I ordered were properly deveined and the tortillas were pretty good. read more

Fuentes reopened this week and though the decor is updated that's about it. I got the midtowner (chicken breast covered in queso) it was about 1/8 inches thick and maybe 4 inches for diameter. It was extremely salty. My two friends got enchiladas and they had the same review as being overly salty. Service was slow, sat long periods of time without a drink and long waits to get anything. After 7 minutes waiting to pay, we finally paid up front. My lunch and drink was $15, definitely overpriced for quantity and quality. You won't die coming here but there are PLENTY of other options for Mexican food in San Angelo. read more

You would think that the tortilla soup with chucks of chicken would be so tasty and moist... Nope. Chicken was dryer then Gandhi bareless feet. My gosh it was like... Blah! What a let down. And the oil is just.... Ruling the soup! You may had it going on in the start but boy have u drop the ball on this soup. It's so easy to prepare and you failed at it. Com'on! Great location! The ambiance is welcoming and the decor is lovely. Our servers have all been top notch with great suggestions and prompt service. The salsa was great and chips were warm and fresh Their house margarita was excellent too! The bar area looked cute maybe a great spot for people after work or a quick lunch. We had traditional Mexican plates mine with a taco, cheese enchiladas with an amazing chili style sauce, rice & beans. The food was all good and served very fresh & piping hot! Bad Food & Staff Service while on Vacation during the Holidays!! Henry's was closed so we decided to give Fuentes a try; keep in mind, it was NOT busy when my family & I arrived at 6p.m. Waiter Keven B. was RUDE, SLOW, & UNAPOLOGETIC...non responsive to some questions asked and just not "polished." Food took 45-50 minutes to arrive and was cold by that time...my sisters chicken quesadillas had no flavor and came without beans or rice.....my chicken fried steak was sadly small with a hard baked potato, no side salad or toast!!! Not what I expected for a nearly $13 plate! Note to Self Fuentes Downtown: Now that customer complaints are increasingly being channeled through the oh-so-public social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter. We came here for the after hours festivities on Friday night. I t was ok, not near as many folks as there were when we came down the first time way back in February or something like that. The service was great. Our waiter was on top of things and friendly but the food was just kind of meh. Not so bad we would not eat it but not good enough to want to go back. There was a differnt taste to the chili con queso and salsa that was a bit of a turn off to my family and I. My wife and I got carnitas that were nothing to write home about and my wife noticed a hair in her food when she was close to being finished. The atmosphere is beautiful, imaging the history in the building is awesome, but the food was mediocre. It is a very white washed version of Mexican food which all I saw there were white folk so I guess they watered down the food to fit the tastes of the residents. It's sad, we wanted authentic Mexican food and were let down. Especially the enchilada sauce which is more of a gravy than actual blended red chili's. I would not go back. I grew up in east Texas and have not lived here for 28 years. I visit here often and tell people how much I enjoy Texas because of the people - genuine hospitality and all around good people. My party of eight had the absolute worst experience at Fuentes Cafe this evening. Rude service, cut our group off from drinks at 9pm when one person in our group got his dinner about 30 minutes after everyone else. Waiter was rude and in a hurry. I have never experienced such poor service and never anything like this in the state of Texas. Sorry that my young adult children had to experience this - especially after I've told them for years how great the people of Texas are. read more

Good atmosphere, friendly staff, bland boring food. Really Fuentes?! You're a Tex-Mex joint in the middle of TX and your food tastes like my 3yo made it. I had the chicken taco salad and the chicken tasted like it came right from the can! The same can be said about the chicken tacos. No spices, not grilled, just tasteless and watery. Yuk. My buddy ordered the steak fajita burrito. Basically meat, onions, bell peppers. No beans, cheese, anything. Awesome! The only redeeming thing I tasted was the salsa. This is my wife's FAVORITE place to go for Mexican food. She has been in full withdrawal with the COVID restrictions. She has numerous food allergies and the kitchen is more than accommodating in protecting her. She always orders the same thing and she loves it. I have always eaten the enchiladas and the coleslaw is the best I have EVER eaten ANYWHERE. I found I LOVE the spinach enchiladas with sour cream sauce. The refried beans are fantastic. The chips are very light, crisp, and fresh. The salsa is rich with just the right amount of heat to make it really addicting. The service is always good and I like that the servers write down your order. No complaints on the service side. This would be a five star review, HOWEVER, I can't say anything good about my experience with the bar. I typically order a Margarita on the rocks with salt anytime I eat Mexican food anywhere. I have tried to drink every Margarita they offer from the top shelf on down. I do not feel as if there is EVER ANY alcohol in the drinks. I usually drink two large Margaritas and then let my wife drive home. (she doesn't drink) I have ordered as many as four Margaritas and never felt ANY alcohol. I now order ice water with my meal. I will never again order a drink from the bar. My bill is MUCH less now but Mr. Fuentes is not saving himself money by shorting the alcohol in the drinks. I now spend ZERO on drinks and he is losing the money for two large Margaritas every time I come in. Five stars for Food - one star for drinks = Four Stars!!!! read more

After a lot of research, reading reviews, including some that are less then a week old & looking over their website we decided to go here for lunch today only to discover that they are closed due to damage when a wall collapsed back in early September. Fuentes recently opened back up, a group of friends and I were excited to try it out. Our group ordered guacamole as a starter, it tasted as if it came from a bag and was not really appetizing, too expensive for what you get as well. Additionally, the service took a while, over an hour and a half for lunch... from the time we ordered entrees to receiving them, 45 minutes had passed. Two people got their correct meals, mine and another were entered correctly, but came out completely wrong. It was no fault of our server, but it seems the kitchen staff may not be actually paying attention to what is being ordered. One person ordered tortilla soup, and was given a fork to eat it with. By the time we received the food, we had to rush eating due to the little time we had left for lunch. Overall, the food tasted alright, but the service was sub-par. read more

I like their food, it is classic TexMex and I like that. We enjoy their atmosphere and drink offerings as well. Very charming.

It was my co-worker's turn to pick and he chose Fuentes Cafe Downtown. Our service was good. We were seated promptly and our waitress took our drink orders right away. She immediately brought out our drinks and chips & salsa, which were pretty good. She then took our meal order and came right back to bring the salads that accompanied our meal. I ordered the chili relleno and my co-worker ordered the enchiladas which came out fast and HOT. I could literally hear the plate sizzling as I made the first cut of my relleno. My co-worker devoured his food and said he liked his enchiladas very much. My food was so-so... not great but edible. I'd be willing to come again and try something else. read more
