The crowd is rambunctious to say the least, proper east London blood mixed in with the odd commuter heading to or from Liverpool Street. But one thing that leaves little to be desired is Cambridge Heath Station. Times being hard there are never any staff and the ticket office always has its shutters down so Cambridge Heath becomes the perfect urinal, homeless shelter and if far from private, great place to shoot up to an audience of 5.30 home comers apparently. But walk on by, turn a blind eye, hold your breath stepping over the puddles of piss and get onto the platform and take a look around and the great 360 view of East London, it's rare opportunity to get up this high and get the view in all directions. And just think, all for a quid or free if you like to live life on the edge, which I'd never encourage

Trains come every 15 minutes and are now generally on time. Also the sign used to say 'You are here' and point to cambridge but has now thankfully been changed (i think) and will no longer confuse touristy types who are looking for wonderful universities rather than strange cafes and 'gentlemans clubs'. Overall, a lovely station (ish)

With new trains, the Victoria Line is probably one of the better lines on the London Underground…read morealongside the Jubilee Line and Metropolitan Line and perhaps could edge it to be the best line on the network - despite having just 16 stations it still has great access around the city and is a line popular on a Tottenham Hotspur matchday as it provides access to Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (still a good walk however and horrific on a matchday). It is the light blue line on the tube map and quite new compared to the other lines on the Underground, as it opened in 1968 and spans 13 miles. Interestingly, the Victoria Line took a further few months to expand to London Victoria. It was then opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode from Green Park to Victoria. Many stations do have step-free access and are quite modern some step-free stations include: Tottenham Hale, King's Cross St. Pancras, Green Park, Victoria, Vauxhall and Brixton - this means you can hop off a train at Euston Road (head to Kings Cross St Pancras for step-free or Euston) and then go onto Green Park, where you can then get the Jubilee line to continue your journey throughout central London, the same being said for Victoria which is close to Westminster and serves the train station of the same name. Most Victoria Line stations do serve others meaning it is pretty easy to hop on and off another tube depending on the construction of the station - I personally found Green Park to be much longer to get in-between two lines just to name one. The most intensively used line on the Underground also means trains are pretty frequent and modern which is a bonus - odds are if you're using the Underground you will be using this line as part of your journey across London, and for the connections across other lines being much better than any other line combined - I feel this has the edge to warrant my highest rating for any London Underground network of four-stars.

The Piccadilly Line runs through Holborn. Massive escalators carry people up and down to the train levels. Walls are lined with theater ads. Tap on and off with a credit card is easy. Coffee and pastry vendors stand outside the station.

If given the choice between getting off at the Holborn Station or Covent Garden, STOP HERE…read more The Piccadilly Line takes you from the airport directly to the strand, but it's best to stop here. The Covent Garden stop is a mess and with luggage, you'll need to wait in a crowded section to use the lift rather than walk up the numerous stairs. Just so messy. The Holborn station is so much less busy and so much more pleasant.

Fenchurch Street railway station is the City of London's oldest main line station, the smallest,…read moreand also one of the nicest. It is also one of the four stations on the original Monopoly Board. Perhaps these things are not unrelated? The first station in the area was the London & Blackwall railway's terminus in nearby Minories, opened in 1840. These trains ran down to the Thames at Blackwall, and were designed to take traffic from the ferries, which they successfully achieved. In 1841 it was extended close to the city, on the present site. It was rebuilt in 1853-4 to the designs of George Berkeley, in grey stock brick, in a simple classical design with doric pilasters separating round-arched windows, all surmounted by a crescent-shaped pediment, in which is located the station clock. The station also became the terminus of the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway (LT&SR) n 1858, and it is these services - to Tilbury and Southend - which survive to-day. The frontage happily survives almost untouched, and in excellent condition, although the original flat canopy above the entrance has been replaced by a nevertheless attractive zig-zag canopy. It faces a small square, and is delightful in summer sunshine. The same cannot be said of the accommodation behind, where the graceful arched glass train-shed has been replaced by a rather low and dingy ceiling underneath a large office development, although the long platforms do at least have some daylight further out. Its small size means it is also easy to navigate, and there are no long walks to anywhere. The main ticketing facilities and concourse behind are at first floor level: there are escaltors, stairs and a lifts. Toilets (free) are on the ground floor, with all other facilities at first floor level. There are a number of food and drink outlets, a Transport for London help desk, several cashpoints and a small newsagent (W H Smiths) on the concourse. There is also a small ticket office at the Cooper's Row entrance. The station has just two island platforms giving four platform faces, which are used to capacity at peak hours, providing some 20 trains an hour. The services used to be a by-word for awfulness: the LT&SR acronym was reinterpreted as the 'Late, tired and suffering railway' by its passengers. However, the trains are now exclusively operated by the c2c company (c2c = City to coast), with shiny new trains which are among the most punctual in the UK. Expect big crowds here during rush hour with people changing from one to the other. There are also people who take the opportunity to switch if it's a District train and they want Circle or vice-versa. Stairs down to the ticket hall and then escalators to the Central or District/Circle line platforms, this station straddles both Travelcard Zones 1 and 2. TfL helpfully knows the difference and you will pay the lesser fare if you are traveling on an Oyster card. It doesn't really matter what you do, you're always going to exit the station on the wrong side of the road. So there's that. Kensington Gardens is nearby.
