Banana Leaf - Really good char kway teow

There are no dinner plates here; instead, the wait staff will lay fresh banana leaves (hence the name) at each place setting. Servings are definitely good for serving, which makes dining with friends a more satisfying culinary encounter than eating alone. I recommend starting off your meal with some Roti Canai. Roti are warm and chewy pieces of flat thin bread (something like a tortilla except more 'slouchy') that you are meant to tear into pieces for dipping into creamy curry sauce. Follow that up with some pad thai --- this dish will drown your taste buds in an explosion of salty soy sauce and sweet, crunchy peanuts. And if you are feeling the need for some warm soup, you might as well have a pot of Tom Yam Kung; don't snooze or you might find yourself all out of the juicy prawns that lurk underneath the red-orange broth. A word of advice: this is a place for those who love spicy food. Steer clear if you wimp out at the slightest hint of capsaicin.

I've been missing char kway teow, my favorite food in Penang (definitely one of the best places to…read morefood trip!) and I was happy to find it on the menu of Banana Leaf - but would it meet my expectations? I took one bite and immediately I was transported to Penang. I've tasted not-so-good char kway teow in the past, but this one really hit the spot. We paired the char kway teow with roti sans the sauce, and it was perfect to balance the savoriness and richness of the char kway teow. The restaurant ambiance is nice and relaxing, too, and quiet enough to have conversation. My only nitpick is one of the staff, who looked at us with a measuring, scrutinizing gaze. With our backpacks and casual attire, to him we must have looked like students who could not afford the food there. I would have rated this Banana Leaf branch five stars if not for that.

So Attentive that they always bussed the plates and such at the most opportune time. The food was delicious. I had to try everyone's dish. My sis-in-law had the Marlin, mom had the Pork Chop. I had the riblets and my godchildren had bolognese spaghetti. Each dish had a deep flavor to each of them. Truly one of my favorite dining experiences here in Quezon City. The ambiance is nice and relaxing, forgot it was a tight place to be. It seemed cozy and spacious. But they had comfy seats and nice visuals all around. Hope I get to upload pics. I've got to go back soon.

While browsing through the menu, I felt that the food choices were a good fusion of all types of comfort food. Probably, the chefs behind 49B wanted to share with us their expertise in making food that they love. We ordered the Carne Asada Nacho Fries and Squash Flower Fritters to start. The carne asada fries could count as a meal on its own, and despite knowing how much calories are present, I think I could have still eaten some more. The fritters were a bit soft for my liking, but they tasted pretty good with the marinara sauce. My friends and I were quite hungry at the time, so we decided to order a little more than normal and just have everything for sharing. The Beef Lengua was quite good, and the gravy on top just had to be eaten with rice. We also ordered the Sinigang na Lechon, which was a bit smoky for me, but the flavor of all its ingredients could be distinguished very well. Their Papa's Tapa Fried Rice was very generous with their tapa, which included some tapa bits in the rice as well. The tapa was seasoned well and it wasn't too oily. I also liked the way the Chicken Yakitori was prepared. It was a good blend of salty and sweet, and the Japanese fried rice complements it perfectly. The winner for me would be the Dill Mashed Potato-Crusted Baked Salmon. This just tasted like it was supposed to, and the salmon was cooked well that the fish just melted in your mouth. After the very hearty meal, we got the Mary Ann's Chocolate Chip Cookies to share. Although there were only five pieces for all of us, we split it (evenly, somehow), and each took a turn dipping it in cold milk. What a great way to close up our meal. 49B does their menu well, and I think that a lot more people should try their versions of comfort food staples.

Since they are just newly opened, the menu is limited, but food is delicious. We ordered Baked Mussels Overload, Carbonara Benedict, and Twice-Cooked Pork Belly. We are very happy because everything tasted above expectations. The mussels are cheesy and perfectly cooked. I love the carbonara the best. It was creamy, eggy, and filling. The twice-cooked pork has really crunchy skin and tender meat. Overall, food is great and would love to come back.

What I liked about this cafe was that there werent many people there, you might laugh and think oh hey so much for going there, but dont most people who go to a cafe usually go to get away from all the noise so they could enjoy their cup of coffee and a good book? Because, I know that's what I look for nowadays. There's plenty of coffee shops around the area, but not all of them have that advantage of providing customers with some peace and quiet. The only downside is since the cafe is located in a mini compound they share the parking lot with other establishments and if you bring your car, finding parking will be tough, but hey since there's a car wash right across from it maybe you can have your car cleaned while drinking your coffe.

We were seated at a wooden table which fit the nautical theme of the restaurant, and given rocks and round wooden boards where we could smash our crabs. This was my first time eating mud crabs. They are very similar to blue crabs anatomically, but they have much larger claws. They also taste pretty similar. I was concerned that the crabs would not be fresh, but the first few batches were fine and delicious. I was thoroughly enjoying my crab feast until the 3rd batch, where I was hit with an ammonia smell. I quickly lost my appetite and stopped eating. The girlfriend had been craving for crab recently and I did some research and came along this place. I mean, P700 for all you can eat crab? Good deal, right? What do we have to lose? Coming here right after a workout, we were both very hungry and ordered 2 all you can eat crab, a bowl of clam chowder, and a 500g bag of shrimp. The crab is not good. It's dry, flavorless, and really dirty. I think they serve a "mud crab" variety but they seem really low quality. Also, I think these crabs are cooked in advance. Like, WAY in advance because they arrived on our table stone cold. Clam chowder was worse. It was like eating a bowl of hot milk, cream and nothing else. The shrimps were okay but the sauce, "butter garlic", in the words of my girlfriend: "tasted like Mang Tomas". Honestly, none of the sauces they served tasted good. Sadly, we arrived here hungry and left starving. Pros -For P700, you can consume ALL the crab, rice, and iced tea your stomach desires. -Service was pleasant and the staff are very attentive. Cons -Crab isn't good. Very little meat and really dirty. -Seafood doesn't look fresh. -Sauces are yucky. -They are strictly cash only. So make sure to bring some or get ready to wash some dishes.
