Delicious jams and olive oil
Nina N.

I am very grateful to be able to access so much of Full Belly's bounty at the Palo Alto Farmers Market. The usual suspects are delish of course, like seasonal fruits and veggies, but I also love the jams, tea cakes, pickles and am really addicted to their eggs which have the yummiest, yellowest yolks I've ever seen outside of the farm eggs I ate at an agritourismo Farm in Italy. Please don't ever stop coming to the PA market - you are well loved!

Who can resist carrots this lovely?

From the gorgeous organic vegetables and fruits, to the pastured eggs to the nuts, dried fruits, jams and nut butters Full Belly offers such a wealth of beauty that it's a joy to be a part of their success by being a member of their CSA. I love that I can get a flower subscription as well, so every week with my fruits and veggies, I get a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers that usually lasts longer than the week. Their pastured eggs are incredibly fresh, the yolks are deep orange. Poached eggs are a whole new experience when you start with eggs this good. If you stop by their stand at the Berkeley Farmer's Market, you may get a surprise like a pint of mulberries (sweet and juicy), or a pack of homemade almond biscotti (using their own organic almonds and wheat flour). This past week I scored a huge bag of frozen beef bones from their limited supply and I now have a couple of gallons of rich bone broth. Everyone at their stand is friendly, helpful and knows their stuff. It makes buying from them a real pleasure. If meat is your thing, you can buy pork, lamb, beef and stewing chickens through the CSA and they sell wool from their sheep.

After trying other CSAs in the area I came across Riverdog Farm from a newsletter sent out by my…read morefavorite pork butcher, Fatted Calf. $20 a week for organic produce, why not give it a shot. So I paid for a month in advance (you pay by check either by the month or the quarter) and waited for my first pick up. Fortunately there are a few options for picking up your box in Napa (check their website to see if there's one nearby you) including one only a mile away from our home. Yeah! The pickup location, at least in my area, is in someone's carport which is fairly typical of CSAs, thank goodness for volunteers. Just verify your pick up by signing the clipboard by your name, grab your box or unload it into your own bags (if you take the box return it in your next visit) then prepare to be wowed by the amazing produce. Each week is a little but different and changes along with the season. What's always in the box is the most beautiful organic produce I've ever seen. This weeks box had a bunch of gorgeous rainbow chard which was sautéed along with Fatted Calf sweet sausage served on top of Model bread with poached eggs. Best chard ever! I've posted a few pics of the last few boxes, judge for yourself, Riverdog Farm is amazing. It doesn't get any better than this. PS... They also raise organic fed hogs and chickens. Picked up my first pork share (delivered along with my regular box pick up) and the cuts look so tasty. Can not wait to braise the fresh hocks. Check their website for a complete list of pork share offerings.

I was pretty confident that I'd written about Riverdog in the past and was somewhat shocked to see that I praised only their eggs in my short initial review. Yes, the eggs are great, and everyone knows it. But I can make a long, long list of Riverdog products that consider to be top notch: green garlic, raw chickens, pork chops, carrots, daikons, asparagus tips, onions, black radishes, little gems when they're available, .... At the moment, their early girl and heirloom tomatoes are truly excellent. In recent weeks, I've gotten their squash and green beans -- excellent again, of course. Riverdog prices are not outrageous, in view of the high quality. Their wares merit a detour. The farmers (Trini and Tim) and their employees (shout out here for Becky) are all super-nice. Check them out!

Olica Olive Oil - The Olive Oil class where Olga O. of OLICA is getting ready to teach us about the Olive Oil making process.

Aromatic & Deliciously Tasting Olive Oil…read more SITREP Olica Olive Oil is the wonderful business project of Olga O. who has created an exceptional line of various olive oils as well as balsemic vinegars and other sundry projects. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/olica-olive-oil-tasting-room-and-olive-mill-brooks?select=4GLglHXJtiJivsK5lwcH6w&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w THE SETUP Located primarily in the community of Brooks in Northern California, Olga has substantial acreage upon which her Olive Orchard empire is based. However, Olga also spends a considerable amount of time spreading the "Gospel" of delicious, well-made Olive oils - with an emphasis on Extra Virgin Olive Oils. FULL OF CLASS! Indeed Olga is, AND I was fortunate to have her be my instructor at an Olive Oil class at the California State Fair where she share her excpetional knowledge on both the production details of creating different kinds of oils - those olive oils we consume vs. those used for other industrial purposes, as well as sharing her skills in how one would discriminate in tasting between different varietals of extra virgin olive oils, including: * The different methods of extracting olive oil - first press, second extraction, etc.; and, * The various Olive Oil grades of quality, and how these are based on the extraction processes, how they be blended, etc.; and, * How to understand how they may spoil, discolor or be defective if certain precautions are not taken; TASTING Olga also showed us the "hows" to taste olive oil. Just like doing flights of wine, there is a tasting technique, similarly involving "air" - or MORE air to be precise, to open up both the notes of the olive oil as well as your taste buds. It made quite the difference! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/olica-olive-oil-tasting-room-and-olive-mill-brooks?select=4GLglHXJtiJivsK5lwcH6w&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w In the tasting process with Olga, we learned to recognize the three (3) positive attributes of extra virgin olive oil: 1. Fruity - perceived through smelling by the nose; 2. Bitter - more than half the time, this sensation occurs in the back of the tongue; and, 3. Pungent / Spicy - a biting tactile sensation in the back of the throat These attributes will help steer you to a better understanding of the kind of oil you are tasting. OLIVE OIL VARIETALS So it was quite the treat - after all of the "book learning" - to actually try several varietals, and tOlica had several olive oils featured - the standouts for me included: = Arbosana - light, fruity notes, and definitely one I enjoyed by smelling; = Picual - also a fruity olive, but deeper flavor; and, = Koroneiki - this was the most pungent, with a definite bite, and ended up being my take-away to enjoy at home - I actually already sauteed some vegetables and these tomatoes in the picture with the Koroneiki into a lovely pasta sauce that was absolutely deLISH! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/olica-olive-oil-tasting-room-and-olive-mill-brooks?select=hhzUjrbpf1GwnQQu92WkLQ&reviewid=z_6Pj3X3C75Echf7ImXR8g "TOP OF THE CLASS!" Since I did the best on the Olive Oil exam, guess who got a cool dapper Olive Oil apron? Moi! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/olica-olive-oil-tasting-room-and-olive-mill-brooks?select=L4PjZQcQGV5qfar2CQ2BDg&reviewid=z_6Pj3X3C75Echf7ImXR8g THE LOWDOWN Olica has the finest olive oils that you must try!

TL;DR: Rumsey House was an Inn-ferno with horrendous hospitality…read more The Innkeeper double booked our room so we agreed to make do on folding beds. Unfortunately, the advertised "air conditioning" consisted of poorly functioning wall units and our group of four were forced to leave the property in the middle of the night when the power went out (apparently a common occurrence) and the temperature in our room climbed from 90 degrees (with AC and fans on!) to +100. We were originally a party of six and the two that made it through the night reported that the power and water were out through the entire stay. We expected an apology (and maybe a refund) from the Innkeeper, but instead received a torrent of personal attacks, defensive denials, and failure to take responsibility. I'll let the email exchange speak for itself in the screenshots to demonstrate how poorly she handled the situation. (And to save her the time of refuting this review as she did all the others with false claims that there was no record of the guest or they don't have a cobweb, cat, or cleanliness problem, because oh yes, they sure do!) Extreme heat and questionable cleanliness may be tolerable for some guests at this price point, but the Innkeeper's reaction is reason alone to avoid Rumsey House at all costs. Pay attention to the one star reviews.

Our favorite sanctuary when we wish to get away from city living…read more Every year we make it a point to make this our annual outing. With the windows open, a cool breeze at night makes it relaxing to fall asleep to. In the morning you wake up to nature's beauty of humming birds, birds, chickens, ducks, and more which sweetens my life as I am reminded of my summers reading books such as A Girl of the Limberlost or Anne of Avonlea. Our room is cozy with an attached comfort room (restroom). A window seat with a great view overlooking mountains and the lush property. Our host has always been accommodating and wonderful. Breakfast is another special treat! Last occasion there was coffee cake and fresh picked eggs. Today we enjoyed a delicious salad made of local tomatoes, avocado, cilantro, & home harvested pine nuts, fresh picked eggs and cheese, and a peach clafouti. We've been to many bed and breakfasts and the Rumsey House has always been one that we make most of our greatest lasting memories with.
