Does anyone know where you can boondock at a casino in western OR?

The two major casinos in Western Oregon are both tribal casinos. One has an RV park and the other is on the coast. I'm not sure if they allow you to overnight in their lots, but you may be able to find a place nearby. Grande Rhonde is in the…

Hiring The Party Team (TPT) was one of our biggest wedding-planning mistakes. Up front,…read morecommunication was solid: TPT met with us, collected a detailed questionnaire, and charged a premium rate--including an extra hour of play time--so we felt confident everything would run smoothly. Last-minute bait-and-switch Two weeks before the wedding, TPT reassigned us--without consultation--to a subcontractor we had already reviewed (and ruled out) while searching for DJs. This subcontractor charges roughly $500 less than what we paid TPT, yet no price adjustment or opt-out option was offered. Worse, TPT failed to forward the questionnaire we spent hours completing; I had to tell the subcontractor to request it. Execution failures on the day * Ceremony & reception music: Christian tracks were played at our non-denominational wedding until I physically changed the song on the DJ's unattended phone. * Audio levels: Microphones were unbalanced; several speeches were inaudible. * First-dance disaster: Despite sending our custom track twice and discussing it on calls, the DJ played the standard radio version. My wife's best friend--who spent hours recording the song--left the reception in tears. * Dance-floor management: The DJ let songs run to full length without fading, couldn't maintain energy, and had guests heading for the exits by 10:30 p.m., even though we paid through 11 p.m. She began packing up early. Post-event response When I raised these issues, TPT's owner dismissed them as "confusion," defended the subcontractor's professionalism, and fabricated claims that guests had requested her for future events--claims my family members deny. He ultimately offered only a one-hour refund for the early shutdown, ignoring the larger failures that undermined our wedding. Bottom line The Party Team over-promises, outsources at the last minute, and takes no real responsibility when things go wrong. If your event matters, hire a dedicated DJ directly--skip the middleman. I would never work with The Party Team again.

This left our guests cramming around the remaining tables. We, of course, didn't have to pay for the two unused tables, but no other compensation for our compromised party experience. Unfortunately I wouldn't count on them to fulfill their promise. If you do use them, be sure you have a plan B.

This past visit was during a special Sunday buffet offering. We arrived about five minutes before opening and had no wait. Although the dining room became busy, there were still plenty of tables available. We were seated right away, and our friendly servers quickly took our drink orders. Think that would be the last time we'd see them? Nope. They monitored our dining experience better than what I've experienced at many restaurants in Salem. Our drinks never ran dry, and dirty dishes were whisked away within minutes of us finishing. The dining area remained clean throughout our visit. The chairs were also soft and comfortable enough that you could almost sleep in them. Before one bemoans that this is just another low-quality buffet at an expensive price, think again. See the photos. The prime rib had excellent marbling and was tender and medium rare, with the expected slightly more well-done portion toward the outer edge. Au jus was available; however, my cuts were juicy enough on their own that I didn't need it. Each cut I received appeared to be approximately 14-18 ounces. For my first plate, I took a large portion of prime rib and added 14 large breaded shrimp. These weren't little popcorn shrimp buried in breading--the shrimp were larger in diameter than my thumb. See my photo with the soup spoon for a size comparison. They were perfectly fried: crunchy on the outside while remaining tender inside. I also selected a bowl of clam chowder and discovered it made a pretty good dipping sauce for the shrimp. The food was good enough that I essentially repeated myself on plate #2: another large cut of prime rib, 12 more shrimp, and this time I added one of the smoked beef ribs. Interestingly, my second piece of prime rib was even better than the first. It was thicker, with a more precise medium-rare-to-rare center and more substantial caramelization on the exterior rather than tasting like meat that had simply been kept warm. By the time I finished, I'm estimating I had eaten close to two pounds of prime rib, 26 large shrimp, a bowl of clam chowder and a large beef rib. Unlimited soda, iced tea, lemonade, coffee and hot tea were also included. Is $65 expensive for a buffet? Absolutely. Is it necessarily expensive for what you're getting here? That's a different question. My selections were actually pretty limited because I'm picky when it comes to seafood. For someone who isn't, the choices go considerably further: Dungeness crab served hot and cold, oysters, clams, shrimp, salmon, cod, sushi and other seafood selections, along with prime rib, smoked beef ribs, ham, turkey, chicken, salad, vegetables, side dishes, fruit and a substantial dessert selection. Again, see the photos because they tell this story better than I can. If you fill your plate primarily with mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, salad and desserts, $65 may be difficult to justify. But if you're coming here specifically for the prime rib, Dungeness crab and other seafood, the economics change rather quickly. In my case, two large portions of prime rib alone would approach or exceed $65 at some restaurants before adding 26 large shrimp, clam chowder, a beef rib and drinks. I certainly received more than ample value for my $65. For a serious Dungeness crab lover, the value proposition becomes even stronger. This is ultimately what separates the Prime Rib & Seafood Fest from a typical buffet for me. There are certainly inexpensive "filler" foods available, but you don't have to fill up on them. The premium foods aren't hiding in the name--they're actually on the buffet and, during our visit, were readily available. Four visits in two years also gives me more confidence saying this than I would have after a single meal. Based on this visit, the combination of food quality, selection, attentive service, cleanliness and the ability to concentrate on the premium offerings made the $65 admission worthwhile for us.

Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations. I became extremely sick for an entire day after eating a salad at Rock Creek Grill/ Jalepenos, which derailed our plans and made the stay difficult. Compounding the issue, the AC in our room failed, leaving us without a comfortable place to rest. Most concerning was the conduct of a front desk employee who openly mocked my husband. This level of unprofessionalism is unacceptable in any setting, let alone hospitality. As full-time workers and caregivers, our opportunities to get away are rare. This visit was meant to be meaningful, but instead it was disappointing and stressful. We will be choosing other establishments in the future.

The good: I like that they have designated smoking machines that help keep the majority of the floor clear and lower smoke. As someone with allergies, this is a HUGE improvement. I also like that they had free soft drinks and teas available at all times, I do not remember this being a feature at other casinos I've visited. Every staff member we interacted with was nice, polite, and helpful. We were there in the evening (11pm or so) and there were still plenty of options for food available. There were MANY machines to choose from, along with table games. The not so great: I hate that there is no buffet! I loved the old buffet they used to offer but it seems that went away during pandemic times. There was also not a lot of seating for the sit down dining options like the sandwich shop or taco bar. It would be helpful if there were cleaning supplies, even wet wipes, so that people can wipe down the tables before sitting down. We had to use water and napkins, which weren't the most sturdy but worked in a pinch.

The property itself is beautiful, and we were genuinely excited to experience everything it had to offer. Unfortunately, our interaction with one employee, the pit boss named Lolly, completely overshadowed what could have been a wonderful first visit. We were directed by the casino cage/cashier to speak with Lolly regarding guest incentives and whether any fees or promotional offers were available. We frequently visit casinos throughout the country and have received similar accommodations elsewhere, so we simply wanted to ask what was available. The cage staff specifically told us that Lolly was the person we needed to speak with. From the moment we approached her, she made it abundantly clear that she didn't want to talk to us. Rather than greeting us or taking a few moments to answer our questions, she appeared eager to rush us away and treated us as though we were an inconvenience. While I completely understand that every casino has different policies and that the answer to our request could have been "no," there is a respectful and professional way to communicate that. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. What was especially disappointing was hearing her describe Chinook Winds as "just a small tiny casino" that couldn't offer very much to guests. That statement diminished the very property she represents. This is a beautiful casino and resort, and its employees should be proud ambassadors for it, not leave guests with the impression that it has little to offer. I truly hope I never have another interaction with someone who feels entitled to treat people with the level of rudeness we experienced. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to engage with someone like Lolly. Her attitude created an unnecessarily negative experience and reflected poorly on an otherwise beautiful property. That said, I also believe exceptional employees deserve to be recognized, because several members of your staff completely restored our faith in the customer service at Chinook Winds. Danielle, who paid one of our jackpots, was absolutely wonderful. She was kind, thoughtful, personable, and made us feel genuinely welcomed. Heather was another standout employee. Her positive energy was contagious as she walked the casino floor. She cheered us on during bonuses and celebrated with other guests who were winning. You could tell she truly enjoys her job, and that enthusiasm made the casino more fun for everyone around her. I also want to recognize Dianna, who was working at the floor bar. She was incredibly warm, compassionate, and sincere from the very beginning--even before I shared that we were simply passing through on our way to medical appointments for my husband. After learning why we were traveling, every time we walked by she would smile and say she hoped everything went well with my husband's doctors and that we would win big that night. Those weren't rehearsed customer service comments--they felt genuine, caring, and heartfelt. Danielle, Heather, and Dianna are exactly the kind of employees every organization hopes to have. They went above and beyond simply doing their jobs--they made people feel welcomed, appreciated, and valued. They are outstanding representatives of Chinook Winds and the reason we left with at least some positive memories despite our unfortunate interaction with Lolly. I sincerely hope management recognizes the incredible work of Danielle, Heather, and Dianna while also addressing the level of customer service we experienced with Lolly. One employee should never have the ability to tarnish the reputation of an otherwise beautiful resort, especially when so many others are working so hard to create a welcoming experience.
