I walked into the shop off the street to discuss road bike builds with Lee. Lee showed me what he could do, plus he gave his honest opinion of other new custom-build bike options that I was considering buying online. I didn't feel great about any of the options in my budget, and I hate to spend a ton of money without loving the outcome. As we talked more and more he mentioned that he had picked up a boost wheelset with a narrow rim on steep discount and he'd offer it to me for cheap. This allows me to run road tires on my current bike which is a "drop-bar mountain touring bike". Lee was so honest that he told me I'd find an extra SRAM Eagle cassette for a lot less online than he'd be able to sell it for. I bought all the things I needed, set up the wheels myself, and now I'm much happier running 2 wheelsets on my awesome steel drop-bar bike than I would be with a 2-bike setup on my budget. Brought a bike or two in for service when I was scratching my head because I'm prone to mechanical mistakes at home. Lee has always been gentle explaining where my ham fistedness (is that a word?) fell short. Never ever ever felt pressured to buy new parts. Ham fists down one of the finest bike shops in the whole Bay Area, where there are lots of bike shops. Try not to smudge the glass with nose oil ogling the gorgeous US-fabricated components. This is the new kid on the block! I happened to have my pannier fall off in front of this stylish bike shop as I cycled homeward. Lee noticed about six things that needed attention on my tired (new in 1994) somewhat shabby commuter bike. Among all the gorgeous new (and yes, made of METAL) bikes, mine looked like a burro in a racing stable. Nonetheless, I came away with a very fit burro that carried me home without a rattle, squeak or groan. This inspired me to bring a rather more racelike machine in to be fine tuned, and again: perfect work. Lee, the mechanic and owner, helped me with a bike fitting and swapped out the stem and handlebars on my gravel bike in order to get me a better ride. I had no idea how much better my bike could feel. I know just enough about wrenching to know that he really knows his stuff, down to the Newton metre. I'm local and am in the shop regularly (they've got a great selection of records and a nice couch), so I see Lee interact with customers often. He is very respectful and always has high quality, good value recommendations. He stocks local San Francisco handmade bags and frames and components from both local frame builders and solid brands. Have been visiting him for years, in his garage... which was meticulously stocked with cherried out bikes from the decades past - including, what I'm sure were the first mountain bikes to ever grace Mt. Tam. He even has a huge machine to make parts that no longer exist. Very appreciative that Lee was able to help me with a walk-up issue. A poorly adjusted saddle was causing me pain and he was able to identify and rectify the issue. If the issue does persist and the saddle is the problem, I plan to return and take advantage of their saddle demo program to make sure and get it right.
