Yelled at us for having conversations at a totally normal volume. Not for nothing there was no one else in there the entire 40 minutes we were there. Should've gotten his face punched in. I shop for records all over the country and have never seen a more overpriced record store…read more They certainly have a commendable amount of inventory- in particular of foreign rock n roll pressings. If you are a KISS fan especially, there is a lot of specialized, rarer stuff here. But the rare inventory seems to come at the cost of all the inventory's pricing. The prices are 2-3 times what I've paid for the same condition pressings elsewhere- sometimes 4-5 times more. I'm not sure how it's getting these prices especially in a small town like Rochester. A bummer- if the prices were in line I would've bought a good dozen records!

They will lower the price if you call them out on their shenanigans, though, so be diligent. Their recent arrivals section is usually pretty good, but the normal, already alphabetized stuff are pretty common records but marked up due to location. Honestly, I only ever look through the recent arrival stuff when I stop in nowadays. But again, check the editions before buying because they will absolutely claim it's a rarer edition when it's certainly not.

They did the same thing when vinyl was not in vogue, so I appreciate that Mystery Train doesn't feel the need to drastically alter their landscape based on trends like some other music stores. For CDs, I have found that the prices have remained consistently affordable. It's usually $5-7 for used CDs and the genre sections are very deep, so one is bound to find something recognizable as well as obscure. There are also plenty of $1 bin options (especially more so these days) for those who don't want to spend a whole lot for music. They've also got some very solid box sets for $20+ which I have a weakness for as the quirky packaging always gets me. I have always found the staff at Mystery Train to be very laid back and knowledgeable, and I often see them answering any question without a trace of disdain or snootiness. They have also been known to get out from behind the desk and go find things for people. Whether you're looking for something mainstream or way offstream, definitely stop by Mystery Train if you're in the Gloucester area.
