The owner is named Jeff he's super laid back and a reminders me of a OH (original hipster- just made that up but as a gift to you I will let you use it-Your Welcome) not that new age hipsters that are taking over Brooklyn faster then that mice on a NYC subway station. This shop has all your favorite music that has inspired the vast majority if not all of the current music your hearing today. Jeff opened this store over 30 years ago and is a music genius himself. This shop is packed floor to ceiling with very cool Atracks, Vinyls, Tape Cassettes, CDs of all oldie but goodies. Music is a passion for some people and you can feel that this store is filled with not just music items but packed with Love. You can see that like this name of this shop music is in Jeff's DNA I'm not a music person. I love music but hated my grade school musical teacher so that were I being to dislike music. Of course there are comics, tees, and all sorts of nerd paraphernalia but I mostly came for their great selection of vinyl. Newbury has quite a few limited edition/special editions of great classic records on colored vinyl and I loved browsing the stacks there. They also carry new releases and often have those on sale. I found their staff to be super helpful and would definitely come back for records the next time I'm in Manchester.

Well, it's 2026 and my parents currently live in Maine so I decided to head to Manchester when I was visiting to check this location out. It's always nice to see a Newbury store inside of a plaza with the cool logo and fun window displays, and this one had plenty of cool stuff in the windows. The store itself is pretty darn big, especially compared to the crappy new one in Quincy Market in Boston. The story has tons of toys, records, movies, and boxed slop that's been popular these last 2 years. I would say, compared to local competitors Bull Moose and Arizona chain Zia Records, Newbury just doesn't hold a candle to these stores anymore. The movie section here is small, the record section isn't very big, I'm not even sure they have video games anymore, and there's so much mystery box and Funko slop that's half the store isn't even worth checking out. I will give credit to the comic section for having a fairly good amount of single issues as well as trades and the t-shirt selection was pretty big as well. Overall, Newbury Comics is not nearly as cool as it used to be, but it's still a solid spot if you live in the area for whatever nerd culture things you want to pickup. I come to New Hampshire roughly once a year, so I'm sure I'll poke my head back in and hopefully they'll have some Criterion's next time.

Quick, kind and got me the information I needed. Then Wednesday when I had a chance to come pick up my book the staff was attentive and kind, and interested in what I was excited to read. I frequent this bookshop and try to get most if not all my books from them. Any preorders go through them the moment I know when a book will be released! Prices are fair, and I love that they have a used section in their bookstore too! In a nutshell the staff is kind and caring and will even recommend a book based on what you like!

I brought two books to the counter today and took a moment to look in my bag for my book discount bookmark for him to stamp. I carefully put my laptop, wallet, glasses, and clean paper wrapper containing the cafe's fresh veggie sandwich half, all on the broad counter for a moment, in the manner of Lucille Ball. I'm old enough that she was my mentor in a special graduate class on clowning, eons ago. But the bookstore clerk zeroed in on the sandwich. "Get your greasy sandwich off the counter. This is a bookstore." Who talks like this? Yes, the wrapped sandwich was anomalous there, matter out of place but for a moment. He had no right to sound this way, but I apologized. The purchase came to under twenty. He was so excitedly thrilled by this. "You can't have a book stamp because you didn't spend twenty today!" He bounced as he said it. New to the discount program because who cares, I quietly accepted this news. "See?" He went on, "Look. It says so right there, right on the bookmark!" I gave no reply to him. "But, of course, everyone just hates to read!" There was no humor going on. He was claiming the right to scold an old person for being nothing but that, in his eyes. I'm older and small in size. What a bully! I looked him in the face and said, "What is wrong with you?" Off balance, he said, "Nothing. This is just what's called having a sense of humor." He turned and sped off. There was no 'thank you' to complete the transaction. To me, a comic to the core, incivility is not humor at all. It's disrespect. It's a man Indulging in meanness towards an older woman because he can get away with it here and there. "Get your greasy sandwich off the counter," was so inappropriate to say, to anyone, the cruelness of it must have felt like free-flight. It was so absurdly rude he brought to mind Monty Python. I spend up to $400 a month on books. I find everyone else here at Toadstool polite, but similarly distracted and disinterested in the customers, except for the owner. But no one else is disrespectful except for this guy.

This store is very popular since it's located north of the MA border where there's NO SALES TAX and the parking lot is a bit tight in front. I'll shop here often to pick up new releases and scavenge through the used CDs and DVDs. I've picked up a few great deals in Salem including $2.99-$3.99 used CDs and $6.99 used DVDs and cool toys such as kazoos, bobble heads, and a George W. Bush Talking Bottle Opener, "Fool me once.... shame on...shame on you..... Fool me, can't get fooled again." Newbury Comics has an Email Club which is free to join and they'll send newsletters with lists of new releases, specials, in-store events, coupons, and even cool freebies each week to your inbox. I've collected the set of Newbury Comics limited edition pint glasses, which is offered free to Email Club members with an email coupon sent throughout the year. However, several times, this store runs out of the glasses and other freebies quicker than other locations. NOTE: This store will be closing in March 2016 and relocating to The Mall At Rockingham Park in the former FYE space. This has been the trend lately of several Newbury Comics stores moving into malls (ie Nashua, Burlington MA, Peabody MA, Natick MA, Braintree MA, South Portland ME).

I don't know what the incense is that they use in this place, but I want some. The staff looks essentially the same from one store in the chain to the next, and the walls and the shelves above the CD racks contain the same useless junk from one store to the next. It's that useful junk that makes Newbury Comics fun. Very rarely do I actually buy something here. It's just fun to look through all the weird things they have and wonder who would actually wear these stupid t-shirts and tote these obnoxiously quirky bags. If I wanted to buy cheap used CDs, DVDs, or Blurays, I would go to Bull Moose down the street. Newbury Comics just has a charm that pulls me back to enjoy gazing at the strange, strange things it stocks.

So happened upon this place because I stayed at a nearby hotel…read more What a great experience! I saw it on Google maps, went to the website and loved the store before setting foot inside. They had a staff's pick section which intrigued me. So the next day was raining and off I went. So great. The layout was perfect the staff including the owner who rang us up, were so kind and patient and helpful. My wife and I spent a couple of hours in the store and left with a couple of months of reading. If you love books and enjoy reading and happen to be near Nashua make a detour and go here. Extra plus to people not from the area no sales tax in NH!!!!
