We have tried lessons in several places and have not had any luck with him acclimating. We had heard great things about Goldfish, and I told them I just wanted a trial class in case our son refused to participate. To our surprise, he loved the setting and has never resisted going to a swim lesson. He has been with Goldfish for a couple of months, and we could not be more thrilled with his progress! I took his "treading water" clinic and in 10 minutes, I was treading water effortlessly; something I've struggled doing for years and even after taking numerous lessons with private instructors (not affiliated with SwimBox). He's taught for 22+ years! and it shows. He simply knows how to coach all the minute details in swimming mechanics. I've always 'm someone with a high muscle to fat ratio and have ALWAYS sank like a rock. He taught me 3 styles to use my hands to tread and 4 styles using my feet. He demonstrated things in the water (such as corkscrews) that I've never seen/heard of before. He's very friendly and personable as well. I've taken the swim analysis and it was super helpful/beneficial. Looking forward to signing up for more classes! Highly recommend!

Basically, vacation-style swimming where you jump off a boat, tread for a bit, and swim back to the boat. I asked if I could learn this at SwimBox. I was told I could. If they don't teach this, they should have said so. Instead, I took 10 classes and was never taught either of these things. The instructor, as usual, wasted time in the beginning treating me like I'm afraid of water. I can already swim underwater and on my back (not expertly, of course). Instructors should start off with new swimmers by allowing them to show what they can already do vs. starting them with blowing bubbles and floating. At SwimBox, they have no incentive to move you along quickly since dragging out the lessons equals more classes, which equals more money for them. I gave the instructor the benefit of the doubt that she was teaching me some basic things I needed to know. However, as the classes went along, I noticed we were headed towards what I feared -- teaching me freestyle swimming and perfecting my form. This IS NOT what I asked to learn! I don't plan to swim laps or join the Olympics. When I clarified again that I wanted to learn to swim with my head above water, she dismissed that type of swimming as not real swimming. Well, that's how people swim socially and that's what I asked, upfront, to learn. Finally, I was lied to when I was told we would work on treading water, which is the MAIN THING that I wanted to learn. The pools are, obviously, not deep, but I was duped into believing I would still be taught. Each time I take swim lessons, they teach what they want to teach. I will just have to get a friend to teach me because formal instructors are apparently hard wired to teach every new swimmer freestyle. I wasted my money.

I was skeptical about the place because of the bad Yelp reviews. However, I don't find them true at all. That being said, my youngest just turned two and was with Dad and my oldest is four and has swim experience. They've been open 6 months and we were really impressed with how clean and big the center was. It's a building dedicated to kids swim, not a borrowed pool. They plan to increase operations and staff soon. I think they're just not well-known enough yet. They even have good weekend and after school of availability unlike many other swim schools in the area. They're not in the best location of Falls Church but we felt fine and there's a good size parking lot with a lot of spaces. It's in the same parking lot as Staples. The swim staff and the reception staff are really nice too. They waived my 2023 annual registration fee because we just paid it in October and started in November. I do recommend that you have one parent per kid (if one of your kids is in a parent & me class) even if that other parent is not in the water with the child because sometimes the classes don't end or start at the exact same time despite what the schedule says. They even gave us a nice bag and t-shirts for the kids.

For my 7 year old, it was terrible- she actually regressed in her swimming skills compared to where she started. The pool is so small she could barely practice actual swimming strokes. She was ready to move up to the next level for months, but every week there was new unclear feedback that she just needed to work a little more on some skill before progressing. Very frustrating for her. I do not recommend for older kids.

Parents walk in with street shoes and floors get dirty quickly. And there are a lot of irresponsible older men who walk around barefoot, no doubt sharing their plantar warts, and gifted some of that HPV to me, which has made the last 4 months a royal pain in my foot.

I pointed at the huge sign on the wall that said "Lanes are for adult lap swimmers only". Even though there was plenty of space in the free swim area (though it wasn't conducive for swimming laps) she said "I'm not moving." So, I tried to swim around her an her student on my first lap and she wouldn't even share space to let me by. I informed her that I had reserved the lane and she finally and rudely moved. Then she went on to trash talk me with some other swimmers. If making children feel safe is a priority, she should reconsider being combative with other swimmers and consider respecting other people's boundaries.

It seems to follow a medical model of "teach one, do one." Bottom line: highly recommend. Frustrating things are scheduling and timing of the sessions but I make it work bc we have tried a lot of programs and this one finally yielded results with refining my daughters technique to build endurance and capacity in the water (we are not speed people.) Refreshing to find a program that truly understands the physiology of swimming and can translate it to kids.
