Everyone went above and beyond expectations and really made my trip great. I was in Birmingham for just 2 days and had packed my climbing gear hoping to get a trip to a gym in. I called pretty late on a Saturday night to see if I could come in and check it out, and if I bought a day-pass, would I be able to come back Sunday morning. Without hesitation, the staff member told me to come on over. I got oriented and climbed a little bit around 9:30pm before they closed - just long enough to realize I TRULY HATE auto-belays. So, before I left for the night, the staff was nice enough to let me do a belay test and get my tag. I came back Sunday morning just as they opened and it was not trouble at all for my guest pass (from 12 hours ago) to be honored. I did a few more really stressful climbs on auto-belay before someone took pity on me and belayed me. After that, I did some bouldering, and I was pretty done but still had time to spare. So, I asked a guy who looked alone if he needed a belay partner and it turns out he'd only ever used the autos and was really excited to have someone to belay him. I had a great time, made a new friend, and definitely will be making a visit to High Point a standard part of my visits to Birmingham in the future. Also, what I didn't expect was how big the gym would be and how many different areas it had. From a small weight room to bouldering to a kids/beginners area, to top rope, to lead climbing, this gym really has something for everyone. Plus, TRULY - the friendliest and most accommodating staff I've encountered across a variety of gyms.

There are all skill levels from what I call the "bunny slopes" easy to the extremely hard, like you better have muscles in your fingertips kind of climbing. But don't fear - there is no judgement, even the best will fall from time to time, and the staff is always happy to help and will get you hooked up and started. This is all ages fun too. Take the kids for sure! The auto balay (I think it's called) is all I have tried. You're harness is hooked to the rope which will catch you as soon as your body weight starts to pull on it. Once you realize how secure you are, you will be comfortable and feel safe even jumping off when you reach the very top! It's a little scary the first time but trust me that goes away quick! Don't be misled by the word "micro" gym. Since they opened they keep adding and changing the routes so you're not going to be bored. I have always been afraid to try paddle boarding but with a great day rate of $35 (all day climbing, 2 hrs paddle boarding on Lake Gadsden) I'm feeling more confident to try that next when it warms up! Also they have all kinds of classes and activities (sunset on the river, hello!) too. Check out the website and see more information; and as previously stated you can go ahead and fill the waiver out and save a few minutes at the door. Www.climbgadrock.com Side note. The name is on point! There are many who call Gadsden "Gadrock" & for a cool, fun climbing center here I don't think you could have chosen a better name!

The guy at the front desk, Troy, was so friendly and kind -- we ended up talking about music for a while, and he helped us find the perfect rental gear to get started. The whole area was beautiful and easy to navigate thanks to the Kaya app, which made finding the boulders super straightforward. It was a little difficult to determine which were the start holds on some of the climbs but by following the chalky holds of previous climbers we were able to make sense of it for the most part. Between the great climbing, welcoming atmosphere, and amazing people, HP40 definitely became one of my favorite spots. Can't wait to come back!

The park is situated on top of Chandler Mountain (Chandler is a mountain .... Friends reverence for anyone keeping track), in the foothills of The Appalachian Mountains. The park is known among the rock climbing community as a premier bouldering site. The site is also home to a "Bluegrass Park" where it hosts festivals showcasing the genre several times per year. The biggest of these festivals occurs on the Fourth of July. The park features both RV and primitive camping. So, we were coming out to explore and play on the boulders, when a massive downpour hit. We were literally the only ones at the park (just driving in as the rain hit). We parked in the lot and sat there a few minutes. Now, here is where they get the 5 stars .... an employee came out in the downpour to make sure we were ok and didn't need anything. We felt so bad! Any place that treats customers like this is worthy of 5 stars. Thank you Horse Pens staff for caring about the people that come to visit and making sure they are safe and don't need anything. He even offered us a place to get out of the storm while it passed. Looking forward to a time we can return and properly explore this cool site.
