We recently adopted two kittens from Fur Ever Homes Rescue. Everything went smoothly. There was a bit of delay on approving our application/contacting our references, but this is a volunteer organization, not a professional charity. The foster mum to our two kittens was beyond lovely, and so accommodating. She let us stay for so long as part of the meet and greet. I think my partner would have slept overnight on her couch if he had been allowed. The kittens had been treated for an upper respiratory infection, so we had to wait a few days to pick them up until they finished their meds and they had been cleared by the vet. I really appreciated this. We received all the vet paperwork with their proof of neutering and clean health bill post infection two days after we brought them home. We love our new family members and are greatful to Fur Ever Homes taking care of them until they could get to us. read more

We were frustrated with how our application turned out. It seemed that our application is rejected thoughtlessly... They're application included a question about what you would do if potentially you developed allergies. We were honest in disclosing my husband's asthma - and clarified we don't have any animal allergies. His asthma flares up with sports, not with any animal or other allergen exposure. We wrote that if it happens that we developed a life threatening allergy, then we will of course rehome the dog. But explained this is highly unlikely given that we've had family dogs growing up. We felt it was an unfair assessment of our capacity of being responsible dog owners. I understand they might have limited resources and can't give enough time for coordinating applications. But I wished they had called us instead of just emailing so we can communicate more effectively about their concerns. They do ask for references and we provided these! I'm surprised because of our answer to this allergy question that they turned us down so quickly without other considerations. It was disappointing. We want to help rescue animals, but this experience has turned us off from rescue orgs. read more

First I want to start off by saying Simon is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I love him to bits. As for the rescue I would not recommend it to anyone. I work in the veterinary industry and there are a lot of flaws with this rescue. I have had Simon for weeks and have not received his medical records. This is very unprofessional. What if something came up and I needed to take him to an emergency clinic and I literally have no files for him. I do not have proof he is vaccinated. I do not know if he had any medical issues. He was also a massive flight risk and I was not told he did NOT have a microchip. They were so adamant about him being a flight risk before adopting as well. When I asked about this they basically told me it's my responsibility to ask. I'm sorry what?! If I wasn't in this industry and didn't scan him myself I wouldn't have known. For the high adoption cost they should be way more organized. This is very sketchy that I have not recieved my medical records for him and I will be looking further into that. read more

As my first review, I'm sad to make it a negative one. But I felt the strong need to warn anyone looking to rescue over shop for their furbaby. We tried applying for adoption and filled out the application with photos and gave permission to tour our home. No questions asked, went straight to rejection because we have a built in dog crate and dog run on the side of our home. We are not impressed with their service or judgement of a good home for adoption. Do not recommend this service, they do not care about giving a pet a good home. For $800 adoption fee we could saved the heartbreak of being rejected and buying a pup from an owner who actually cares where the dog goes. Stay away. Do not donate. Do not pay their high adoption fees. They have forgotten what a rescue adoption actually is. read more

DO NOT SUPPORT or DONATE! This non -profit organization is unprofessional and extremely rude to deal with. Don't apply or donate to this organization. They apparently are too busy to respond to application requests when they post ads stating that they are in urgent need for foster parents for dogs to be placed in a foster home within the next 2 days as they have no room. So i applied and never ever got an email back. When I confronted them about not responding to my application they lashed out and responded back " saying we have jobs and can't respond " As a dog owner it breaks my heart when I see posts like this and was willing to open up my home to help. Its very sad that a non- profit asking for money donates and items to be donated respond so disrespectful. read more

This rescue needs a reality check on what rescuing animals is truly about. Overcharging is just the beginning of the negative impact this organization has on the rescue community in Calgary and area. They are terrible at replying to emails and phone calls unless it is to collect money, or give animals to someone to care for. They do not follow up on veterinary care, and when a family member of mine had several of their dogs in her care, and one of them contracted PARVO, and spread it to one of her animals, they showed no compassion or remorse and did not offer to help with expenses or the burden of care throughout the healing process. It is very embarrassing to be associated with this establishment, not only for the reasons listed above, and below with other reviewers comments, but for another, even more sinister reason. They use their Board of Directors email and members to act as 'Legal Council' and have them harass family members of volunteers. They choose to divulge personal information of these volunteers that is against the Freedom of Information and Privacies Act (FOIP) and place their volunteer roster at risk by doing so. By far there are FAR better rescues in this city, that have the best interest of animals in mind, and not profiteering. read more

Will never recommend this rescue. Do your research!!!!!!!! Research this group online and you'll find multiple poor reviews. The owner Carmen is extremely rude and threatened to take my dog Back because I had posted online that I was looking for someone to look after my chihuahua whole going through radiation therapy. If you write an honest review on here, be prepared to get a nasty email from Carmen threatening to take your dog away. I have never received any paperwork on my dog, she refuses to send me any proof that she had her shots, what vet, etc. She adopts to everyone and anyone at the adoption events without doing a home check. I know this for a fact. The more money she makes the better. BE VERY CAREFUL DEALING WITH FUREVER HOMES!!!! read more

We really wanted to support the rescue by adopting a dog from the organization. However, we suppose you either need to be super lucky or you will be disappointed from being turned down. We have had 4 requests to adopt 4 different dogs, but got turn down every time. It's depressing to get turn down in 4 occasions. They either have a super strict procedure (on us?), or we have disadvantages because English is not our first language and we have young kids at home? We are not living in a condo or apartment. We have a supportive family and everyone spent time and went to the adoption event together. We have had 25 years of experience with dogs. So we really don't know what our disadvantage is and got turned down in 4 occasions. It is like a job interview in order to adopt a dog there. Therefore, we suppose in order to adopt a dog from them, you either need to be super lucky (to get picked) + have lot of time to go to "interview" + ready for disappointment + good with writing skills (for the application forms) + good communication skills (to talk with the organizers at the event). read more

This rescue euthanized a puppy named Coco whom they imported from Mexico because of ringworm, a highly treatable condition. Either they internationally imported a puppy with ringworm, a communicable disease, or Coco contracted ring worm under their care. Disgraceful puppy killers. read more

We have been trying to adopt through Fur-Ever Homes Rescue since November 2013, but are constantly given the run around. They don't tell you the truth when you speak to them on the phone and they seem to have no interest in actually finding good homes for their dogs. Twice we've spoken to them on the phone about our application and they tell us everything should be fine, but then they never get back to us. We were told one of the dogs we were very interested in had already been adopted, and then saw an ad for him online the very next day. When asked about it they replied that he'd "been returned with a bulls**t excuse" from the new owners that they wouldn't elaborate on. We then asked about him again and were told he may have been adopted again but would get back to us right away. We never heard anything and here we are in January and they are posting new ads for him online. This is all completely aside from the very high prices they want to charge (which we would have paid anyway if it meant saving a dog instead of getting one from a breeder). As the previous reviewer has also noted, this organization has now been charged with neglect. No surprise here. This place has almost turned me away from rescue organizations completely and the only reason I'd even consider getting an animal from them, is to get the animal away from them. I really don't know how organizations like this are allowed to continue. read more

Please do not support this financially driven rescue. We adopted a 5 year old chihuahua with a clean bill of health (so we thought). Our beloved little dog had a very concerning cough so we brought him to our vet. Turns out our dog was at least 10 years old and came with a very long list of health issues. He's in heart failure, he has very poor oral heigene and lots of missing teeth, both hind legs have dislocated knees and because of his hearts weakened state he actually died during his neuter operation but was of course revived. He needs operations on his mouth but we cannot fix that problem because of his heart. None of this was news to Fur Ever Home's - we got all that information from their own veterinarian. Once we approached Fur Ever Home with these details - they immediately admitted to knowing all the health facts and apologized for not sharing with us. We requested a refund for the dog they said absolutely not without giving the dog back - at that point we were concerned about the level of care he'd receive in their possession so kept him anyway. My partner and I had adopted a dog from Furever homes in March of 2013. His name was Joe and at the time we were assured that he was completely healthy, that he was kennel trained, and that he was good with other dogs. We paid their fairly high adoption fee and took Joe home from a rather poorly-kept, dirty, and understaffed facility. Long story short, Joe ended being neither healthy, nor kennel trained. Within moments of getting him home we spotted a prominent limp which Carmen, the owner, told us was most likely a luxating patella, but that it was no big deal, he could live with it forever, and besides it would be our cost to fix. She insisted she hadn't noticed the injury, which is extremely difficult to believe. Joe also refused to go in his kennel, and had zero house manners. We fought to get our money back, even offered to give half back as a donation, only to be told absolutely not. We did end up dropping Joe back off at the same awful facility late at night, at which point we discovered that the facility also isn't normally monitored during the evening hours. The owner had to make special arrangements for someone to be there at 5PM to pick the dog up. In general I would not recommend this facility to anyone. If you're looking to adopt a dog, there are better, more reputable organizations to go through. This organization should be called "Any Home Will Do" not "Fur Ever Homes." *ADDITION* It should be noted that volunteers at the rescue have a tendency to message people who make bad reviews to trash them or make them feel bad for picking on a "helpless not-for-profit." Please do not be swayed by their aggressive guilt behaviour, my review and others are based on personal experience, and should be accepted as such. read more

Very unprofessional. We fostered puppies for them. We were told by one lady that fosters were not allowed to adopt. After returning the puppies, we let it be known we wanted to adopt one of them. Again told, when she's put online to fill in an application and they take 3 applications per rescue and go with the one they chose. Odd! So filled in application only then to be told someone else came first and the other lady said we were misinformed...I will never deal with this rescue again! My mom had the worst experience ever dealing with this Rescue.. all she wanted was a companion and she found one. She brought the dog home and after 1 day she was in Emergency due to severe allergic reactions to the dog. She tried her best for few days to keep the dog but it just made her worse So with deep regret she had to return the dog. She was given no contact information other than where she picked the dog up so that's where she went back to. The pet store.. So she left the dog there with the staff...Well the Rescue "lady" called her and ripped into my poor 68 year old mom Saying how she "abandoned " the poor dog.. my mom was trying to explain to her that she just couldn't keep the dog but the lady would not listen and threatened her that she would put her name on ever adoption agency out there to never let her adopt! And she told my mom that absolutely no refund! This rescue is a joke and I would never adopt from there! EVER read more

Wow, after reading these reviews I guess I dodged a bullet with this rescue. I saw a few little dogs on Petfinder from this rescue, so i sent in an application naming the dogs I was interested in. Then I saw on their FB page that they were having an adoption event close to our home so we decided to go. There was one little guy I fell in love with right away. He was very scared and timid. I asked one of the volunteers if I could hold him so she went in the pen to pick him up but he backed away from her. She sat on the ground to make him feel safe before trying to pick him up. I got to hold him and he was so adorable. While I was holding him she told me that he had only come to Calgary last week and there was no available foster home so he had been in a kennel at the Veterinary clinic for a week. She had only picked him up that morning and brought him to the event, no wonder he was so terrified. She got a leash and we walked out side with him and were talking about our application and our home situation, she thought we would be a good fit. I picked him up again and he nuzzled into my neck and I was so taken with him. I just wanted to take him home and give him a bath, some food and show him it was all going to be ok. When I asked about the price of his adoption the volunteer told me $450, my heart dropped because we could only afford $350 tops. She said she would call (can't remember the name) and ask about the price. I waited around for at least half an hour and she came back with a "no, his fee is $450" then told me something about vet fees and neutering etc. and that with some of the dogs they use up the whole $450 on vetting. After reading the other reviews it seems that is the standard fee for all their dogs. I left heartbroken and felt so bad for the dog. I may be naive but doesn't "non-profit" mean they don't make money, they just find the best home for the dogs? I realize they need to pay the vet bills, feed and keep them safe until they find good homes for them but if there is someone like us willing to take the dog and give it a great home, shouldn't there be a little leeway in the fee? There are probably a lot of people that would like to adopt a rescue dog but they should be able to move on their fees a little so the average-joe can afford to adopt. Almost 5 years ago we adopted a cocker spaniel mix with the knowledge from the foster parent that my dog was 2 years old. Two days later we found out she was actually 7. Yes they paid for the adoption fees after we complained but today I had to put down my sweet girl. If the company was honest about her age I have a feeling I wouldn't have had to put down my dog so soon. After reading another review on this page I have found out this has happened multiple times. Adopted a dog from Fur Ever Homes about a year ago and couldn't be happier. We have a happy, healthy dog and we were recently invited to a "reunion" event that the rescue puts on annually. I'm not sure why the other reviews are so negative, or why anyone would expect a refund for returning an animal. Even though my first foster became my dearest, most loyal friend, it was not without struggle. I agree with the other reviewer about the owner's aggressive, rude attitude. My foster dog was having obvious health issues so I brought him to their preferred vet (who was shady, didn't seem to care about his job, and was located at the very edge of NE calgary). He misdiagnosed my guy. The owner of the foster home dismissed the vet and said that he doesn't know what he's doing. Why have him look after the dogs, then? Probably because he is cheap. Anyway, when I tried to bring up my dog's medical issues, the owner brushed it off again. She said he was peeing normally, and I know (having had two dogs myself) that he wasn't. She said he was just marking but his pee wasn't coming out and he was struggling. She acted like I was was an idiot. I did not want to put my foster dog in the adoption events unless they advertised that he has health issues. The rescue agency forced me to come. My dog was only interested in following me around and of course I eventually kept him. It is common for rescue societies to advertise their dogs as healthy and young. My guy was advertised as two years old, but different vets said that he was around 6-7 at that time. He is on proper medication now from a very loving, knowledgable vet in Signal Hill. Be careful when adopting. read more

I adopted my dog from fur-ever homes well over 4 years ago and everyone was friendly and the adoption went smoothly! However a few months ago my family and I were interested in adopting another dog so we looked on fur ever homes website and filled out an adoption application for a puppy. We were excited when we got a call saying our application was accepted. We then received a call from the foster who had told us his adoption was pending but we could drive an hour and a half to come "meet him". We didn't bother since the foster didn't sound very enthusiastic and was quite dismissive. We then wanted to adopt a different dog a month later so we filled out an application for another pup. We received no communication and knew they would be at their usual adoption event on the weekend so we asked about this dog, only to find out that the dog was still in L.A and wasn't able to come unless he was adopted first. So my family went and talked about it away from the group and decided yes that we wanted to go ahead. When I went to talk to who I believed to be the owner we were rudely dismissed and were ignored for over 20 minuets. We finally tried to adopt again today and both women who were at the location were extremely rude and did not get off of their chairs to offer any assistance or spark any conversation. I picked up this adorable chihuahua only to be told that he "needed a leash because he was a rescue" which the dog was in my arms almost asleep and we were already staring to bond with the dog. We then see this couple walk over to us and we're informed that he had been adopted. Which in my opinion is something that should have been stated before we picked up the pup. I have found that this rescue agency is extremely careless and obviously lacks basic customer service skills. Three times we have been let down by furever homes and we will not be looking at this rescue any further. I should also state that when I adopted my pup he was in very poor health which they assured he was completely vet checked and okay, six months after the fact we had to remove 22 teeth due to infection. This rescue gets majority of its dogs from high kill shelters located in the states specifically the Los Angeles area as well as Mexico near Los Cabo's. In my opinion there are too many local animals here in Alberta that get overlooked by adopters because of imported pets. There are many Alberta based rescue groups and I urge people to do their research before they adopt. read more

Recently adopted from Fur ever Homes, and the whole experience was wonderful. The foster home was clean, lovely really, and a very positive space. The paper work aspect, including the communication aspect was smooth and straightforward. Love my wee girl, she is fitting in nicely, I would definitely recommend Fur ever Homes. read more

I never expected to get a dog. I walked into a PetSmart one day and Fur-Ever homes happened to be there having an adoption event. We stopped to take a look but weren't interested in any of the dogs... that is until we saw him. All the other dogs were jumping and barking looking for attention but he was sitting in the corner scared with his ears back looking around at the craziness around him. Thats when my husband asked to pick him up and he never put him down. He immediately rested his head on my husbands shoulder and didn't want him to put him down. We knew at that moment that this dog was meant to be ours. Fur Ever homes was very helpful and patient. We didn't have cash on us as we didn't expect to buy a dog but they held him until we returned (others were following us hoping we'd put him down). They even stayed past the adoption event time giving us the time we needed to go to the bank and fill out paper work. When we first took him home he was skinny and scared. He didn't know how to be a dog and I imagine that is because he was a stray. He wasn't 100% healthy but with some TLC and time he grew into the perfect pooch. We truly believe that we won the lottery with him. It it wasn't for Fur Ever Homes then he may not even be alive today. They pick up dogs of the streets in California that usually would not get a second chance at life. I will continue to recommend this rescue to anyone who is looking to add a dog to their family. read more

We have tried multiple times asking to see a particular dog from this organization. At first I thought, well maybe because they are smaller it takes more time for them to respond. Nope! They still haven't contacted us in regards to our application, or responded to our messages on Facebook (even though we can see that they have been read). This is one of the reasons why people don't adopt. All these smaller agencies that just give people the run around and waste their time, when all they want to do is provide a good loving home for a pet. It's off putting and very frustrating. And judging by the reviews on here, maybe it's a good thing we never made it far in the adoption process. read more

I have in the past tried 9 times to adopted a dog, and was told they never received applications ever, I also attended their expos twice only to be told by pres. Carmen that she would look into my app. personally & no reply or phone calls from anyone or her. We put our adoption papers in through the internet and they were accepted. The next step was the visit with the dog and the foster mom. That went well. Then I contacted the lady in charge and said that we wanted to adopt the dog, but wanted to get a blood test done as our vet highly recommended this. It would tell us if the dog had Lime disease Valley Fever, or Heart worm. We had no problem paying for this blood screen. These are common diseases that as prevalent in the States and Mexico and can be dormant for sometime. We were told that it would be to traumatic for the dog and that the dog was healthy after 10 days in foster care. It was also to much to ask of the foster mom. It seemed very suspicious of them as if they were hiding something. it is traumatic for them being shown in the stores every week, but the difference is it is a money maker for them. We decided no blood test allowed,, no dog from them. A word of advice, these dogs should have a blood test before they go to foster care and are adopted to unsuspecting adopters. It is unfair to everyone, but the Fur-Ever Homes Rescue.It was very disappointing for us that a blood test was a deciding factor in not adopting a dog. read more

The owner (Carmen) claims that priority is given based on application completion. I filled out an application in February and found the dog I wanted to adopt this week, and was told that I could have her. Then the owner fabricates a story about that dog and tells me she wouldn't be a good fit for my home, and someone else is going to adopt her. She assures me I can have a similar available dog who would be a better fit. Then she gave away that dog as well and told me that both of the adopters who got the dogs did their applications before me and thus had priority over me. I later find out that she told the 2nd adopter (who had wanted the 1st dog also), that the 1st adopter got priority because she worked at the grooming salon the rescues go to. My cousin owns that salon and definitely did not put in a bid for, nor get, this dog. And now it appears that both adopters filed applications after me. The second I showed any interest in some of the older dogs I was pushed in that direction by the owner and made to feel guilty for having wanted to adopt one of the 2 year old rescues. Needless to say, the owner lied on several occasions to me in order to steer me towards a dog with less demand, when she found another interest in the dogs I had in mind. The owner has a complete disregard for the feelings of potential adopters, and completely lacks integrity and professionalism, and is out to maximize her profit under the facade of a not-for-profit. read more

I adopted a pomeranian from Fur-Ever Homes in 2012. I was a first time dog owner, and was told the dog I was interested in would be perfect. They said he was good with people, and house broken. The first day I took him home, he began shaking in fear and would hide any chance he had. He ran underneath my deck, which was a horrifying experience to get him out. He was not house broken AT ALL. On top of this, I was still willing to be patient and keep him but I developed a horrible allergy and when I spoke to the worker who had completed my adoption, she said to return him and I would get my money back. I felt terrible, so I offered 50% of the fee as a donation and I would take the rest back. Well that never happened, I emailed/called for over a year with no response. I never got a dime back. Horrible experience. Also very strange facility, dogs stuck together in one small room. Pee/poo everywhere, very dirty, do not recommend. read more
