The process of adoption was pretty straight forward with an application and then a phone interview. My phone interview did not contain any information about my prospective kitten's medical history, so I asked for a copy, they informed me that this would be provided after the adoption and there were no preexisting conditions. After hearing this I decided to go ahead with the adoption. Intially the process was very smooth and I was provided with lots of assistance and resources. As soon as I adopted my cat, Max I noticed that he had a deciduous tooth and it was persistent within the gums and appeared black in colour. I waited for the medical records to come in to see if this was pre-existing. When I was finally sent the medical records it was after the 72 hour period where I could be financially assisted with treatment. It was at this point that I noticed that the deciduous tooth was pre-existing and pawsitive match was aware of it. I decided to email them and provide feedback about how I was disappointed that I was not informed of the tooth and it's colour, as it was already that colour prior to my adoption of him. I was just looking for an apology or an acknowledgement that they should have disclosed the condition prior to my adoption, however I did not get this. Instead after a couple days I recieved multiple emails from different people at the foundation telling me that it woudl be impractical for them to remove all deciduous teeth from kittens and that the medical records were indeed reviewed with me (they were not) the only option they gave me was to return the cat. I was not interested in returning my kitten I just wanted to maybe meet with the vet to discuss the tooth and instead they lectured me on how there was nothing they could do... I think it is extremely important to rescue animals and am not discouraging you from doing so, however my roomate's experience with the Meow Foundation was much more transparent and helpful.

The dog was a senior and required a lot of dental and medical treatment. This was very costly and the treatment costs went way above the adoption fees. However, Misty Creek was committed to improving the life of the dog and most importantly their focus was ensuring the adopter was getting a happy and healthy animal. Shauna, founder of misty Creek is so bloody kind and genuine. She is professional and really mindful on what is in the best interest of the dog. Shauna is approachable and kind. She was incredibly supportive and easy to talk to. I would really encourage everyone to contact Misty Creek if you are interested in volunteering, fostering or adopting. This is a rescue that truly cares about their dogs and will go the extra mile to support a dog in need.

It took her 2 weeks to track Stubbs (her cat) down to this shelter. She had to call and call and call before finally getting through to someone who it turns out was a board member for this shelter. Despite having proof that she was Stubbs owner and proof that she wasn't in the country when she went missing the shelter refused to give her back unless my sister paid $500 for "medical fees" as they had decided to spay and chip her after 3 days. They then told my sister that if she didn't pay that they would adopt her out to another woman for $300 who had Stubbs on hold. They refused to let my sister pay the regular adoption fee or to come get her cat for free because after 3 days she becomes their property and while they were clearly willing to adopt her out to strangers for $300 that was not enough to reunite her with her loving family. She is a loved and cared for cat. She is healthy and happy and sweet. She is also young, not even a year old yet. This shelter is not interested in the welfare of animals or reuniting them with their families. They are interested in selling animals to the highest bidder. Sweet Stubbs is back home and happy and this shelter is $500 richer. Be careful adopting animals from here because they may already have a loving family devastated that they can't bring them home for the absolutely extortionate rates this shelter demands only of the families of lost animals. Lost, not homeless.

My friend had gotten a dog from this place 10 years ago and she was fostering with them so I thought they were legit. When we went there to see our rescue dog, they wouldn't let us come in. There was a strong smell coming from inside when I popped my head in the front door. I didn't follow my gut and have had nothing but difficulty dealing with Trina and her organization, EJ rescue. They wouldn't communicate with me and then gaslight me. Something so simple as just communicating regarding when my dog is supposed to have her vaccinations & getting her ownership papers. Our dog ended up having worms and other health issues. I don't believe that they did vaccinations on her. We still don't have her ownership papers, and I don't imagine I will ever get them now. I just found out from watching the news that EJ rescue has had 29 dog seized and two people were arrestEd. inhumane care of dogs, keeping them in crates with feces. I hope that Trina and EJ rescue is closed down for good and not allowed to have animals again! They are also a profit business not a nonprofit!! Trina has a horrible reputation with every dog groomer, vet, and dog trainer that I chatted to. One person a groomer, who knows Treena personally told me, she's not a good person. They are still posting dogs to be fostered and rescued! Do yourself a favor and go to a reputable organization. A good reminder to do your due diligence, and look up organizations. I was pretty close to calling Bylaw about them and I am glad someone else did!

We recently adopted two kittens from Fur Ever Homes Rescue. Everything went smoothly. There was a…read morebit of delay on approving our application/contacting our references, but this is a volunteer organization, not a professional charity. The foster mum to our two kittens was beyond lovely, and so accommodating. She let us stay for so long as part of the meet and greet. I think my partner would have slept overnight on her couch if he had been allowed. The kittens had been treated for an upper respiratory infection, so we had to wait a few days to pick them up until they finished their meds and they had been cleared by the vet. I really appreciated this. We received all the vet paperwork with their proof of neutering and clean health bill post infection two days after we brought them home. We love our new family members and are greatful to Fur Ever Homes taking care of them until they could get to us.

We were frustrated with how our application turned out. It seemed that our application is rejected…read morethoughtlessly... They're application included a question about what you would do if potentially you developed allergies. We were honest in disclosing my husband's asthma - and clarified we don't have any animal allergies. His asthma flares up with sports, not with any animal or other allergen exposure. We wrote that if it happens that we developed a life threatening allergy, then we will of course rehome the dog. But explained this is highly unlikely given that we've had family dogs growing up. We felt it was an unfair assessment of our capacity of being responsible dog owners. I understand they might have limited resources and can't give enough time for coordinating applications. But I wished they had called us instead of just emailing so we can communicate more effectively about their concerns. They do ask for references and we provided these! I'm surprised because of our answer to this allergy question that they turned us down so quickly without other considerations. It was disappointing. We want to help rescue animals, but this experience has turned us off from rescue orgs.

ARF spends each Saturday afternoon between 1 - 3 pm at Pet Smart near Chinook Mall. Before starting the adoption process, we decided to visit them here to get additional information as well as to meet a couple of puppies that we had our eyes on from their website. They have a very stringent selection process which - as first time dog owners - we appreciated. They won't just let you adopt a dog because you want one. They will ask you to visit the dog, they will interview you, they will spend time with you and the animal to see how you are with them. They will come to your house to ensure it is safe for pets. It may sound a bit elitist but the people at ARF truly have the dog's best interest at heart. Most of the dogs are rescued from rural areas and reserves around the city. Once you have adopted the dog, the support continues from ARF - you are provided with 6 weeks of training lessons. There are also periodic phone calls from ARF to see if everything is ok or if you have any questions or concerns with which they may help. All dogs from ARF are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. I would highly recommend adopting a rescued dog from ARF.

I love that they have a trial day with the dog you are interested in so you can really get a feel for how the dogs will fit in with your life (family, home, schedule etc) before making a full commitment.
