The owner asked if we were looking for anything in particular we mention we wanted Mid Century furniture. She walked us all through the store and showed us some beautiful pieces! We were on a time crunch so couldn't browse long, but ended up leaving with a gorgeous mcm rattan hanging light at an incredible price. I give The Back Door / Furniture Rescue / Front Porch Rescue one star, only because zero is not an option. I rarely write reviews and hope this will help someone avoid an expensive mistake for your furniture. In January 2021, I brought in a pair of mid-century nightstands with veneer that needed to be sanded and refinished. Joni said she often did these types of projects and it would not be a problem. Six months later (she said they were backed up from Covid projects), and after several emails and calls, I finally got a response that she would be getting to my nightstands. Another two months went before before I finally picked them up, and the work was terrible -- blotchy stain on the front and sides, sanding that damaged the trim, stain drips in the corners because the hinges weren't removed, and worst of all, the beautiful wood pattern on the front looking like a kid's spin-and-paint splatter "art" project. The result resembled something an amateur (someone like me) would complete after watching some YouTube videos. Joni said she would try to make it better after I told her how disappointed I was. However, on the way home, I reconsidered and called and emailed (again no response) to ask her not to do any further work. If this was the best that she could do, presenting it as a finished product, I didn't believe she was capable of fixing the damage. She later sent a long, rambling email, claiming she didn't get my messages until after she had redone the stain. Her email acknowledged that she "did not achieve the expected results on the doors of your nightstand." She said she removed the stain and "then resanded, conditioned, stained and polyed the doors before I left, when I was finally satisfied with the new finish." Sounds like what should have been done the first time, although the results were still unacceptable. I am attaching photos of the nightstands, 1) as originally dropped off at the store (before the legs were taken off), 2) the first attempt at refinishing the furniture, and 3) after the work was done again. And yes, Joni actually charged me for this subpar "finished" work! I had to have the nightstands completely refinished again. If you are looking for work to be done properly, I'd highly recommend a woodworker in Silver Spring. I'll be writing a separate review his work. read more

I have this unique wooden coffee pot lamp I bought at an estate sale a zillion years ago I have always wanted to restore it. I took it to Back Dorr and Joni was helpful in suggesting how we could bring it back to life. She does a beautiful job with the milk paints and distressed finishes and she offered me options to have her do the restoration or for me to do it myself. With the extra time on my hands with the covid-19 situation I have much more time for a fun project at home, so she graciously repaired the broken wood parts and now I have the wonderful paint from Back Dorr and Joni's inspiration to bring this piece back to life! Dianne D is posting: I approached this business in August, asking for an estimate so I could submit it to the Air Force after a table was damaged in a move. After a phone call where an emailed estimate was promised, I never received it. Calling the store doesn't work because the phone is very rarely answered, and they don't let you leave messages. I had to go to the store, talk to the son, and leave info with them on how to contact me. They never did. I finally just took the table over because I figured they would get to it since it would be right in front of them. Didn't hear from them. Finally I stopped by because I couldn't get through on the phone, and they had fixed it instead of an estimate. Never called to say it was done. To be fair, it is possible that my husband wasn't clear in whether it was to be fixed or just given an estimate, but at this point, the time had passed when I could submit the cost and get reimbursed. I stopped in again, they apologized, offered to charge me less than normal, and said to come back to get it the next day after they cleaned it up. I came during regular business hours and they weren't there. I went by today during business hours- still not there. I am frustrated that I can't get through on the phone and I have to keep wasting my time calling and driving over there. Still don't have the table after over two months. read more

I want to like this place. But. I checked their website, which advertised an "Anniversary Sale" May 9-11, with 20% off furniture and other items. Sunday May 11 was Mother's Day. But I figured they knew that. I'm 1000 miles from my mom, and I don't have kids of my own. My fiance and I just bought a 5BR house. Needless to say, we're in need of some furniture. My daughter and I were in the market for an "old door" - for a wedding "pintrest" project (using the door as a "bulletin/message board", welcoming family/friends to the reception). We literally "stumbled" upon The Back Dorr when I used their driveway to complete a U-turn and drop off my daughter at her apartment across the street (we were returning from having spent a few hours in Alexandria, looking for reasonably priced reclaimed doors). WOW! What a timely and fortunate find! We were greeted by Joni, the owner, who was working on a project in front of their warehouse. She listened to what we were looking for and was fabulous with regard to providing some other ideas/options, as well as showing us doors that might meet our expectations. We didn't have time to stay - again, we "stumbled" onto this establishment unexpectedly - but after a quick tour, we know/know/know that The Back Dorr has what we want and we will be back soonest to claim our prize! In addition - unrelated to this visit - I have an original antique Morris chair that desperately needs restoration, which has been sitting in storage for years. Without even looking, I instinctively know that I've found the perfect place to tackle my chair restoration. The "vibe" with which we were welcomed and the visible quality of the work that was being done there left me with "no other choice", in my mind, but to come back - to revive my chair, for our door project (well - may turn out to be a bed headboard), and to take a class on painting furniture! Truly, truly was inspired by Joni and the beautiful pieces of furniture that we discovered behind a very unassuming store front/warehouse. I left 4 chairs to be glued and recaned in early September or late August. I was given a completion date of October 2nd. Since we had no urgent need for the chairs, I didn't realize at first that they were overdue. I called the back door around November 12th to find out what happened. I was told I would get a call back. It is now November 21st and no word. I tried to call just now and leave a message but their phone message box was full. After my Ikea dresser literally fell apart at it's last seam I said enough was enough and started looking for a new dresser. I found a piece from the Front Porch Furniture Rescue on craigslist and swung by their brick and mortar location to take a look at it. Front Porch is set in a charming old house and is filled with all sorts of cute things - paintings, textiles, mirrors, and of course furniture for sale. They also have a shop on etsy if you wanted to take a look at some of their pieces before going there. The business is family run and operated and they're all super nice! The father and son delivered my dresser and they couldn't have been more helpful. My dresser itself was beautifully restored and I'm sure I will love it for many years to come! The furniture there is restored with eco-friendly paints and beeswax. They also have painting classes, furniture repair and consignment available if you want to sell your own furniture. Apparently they'll be opening a new location soon so worth checking out that too. Highly recommended to get your non-Ikea furniture fix. read more

They are closing the shop down and will be doing a much smaller volume of work. I've found some really great stuff there over the years, both finished by Joni and also things that I upcycled myself. Joni is the best! This is one of the few stores in the area that carry General Finishes Milk Paint, and twice now I've tried to purchase the paint from the store and both times the store was closed even though it was advertised as being open. This past occasion, August 15 at 1pm, there was a note on the door saying out for lunch with a phone number; I came back about 40 minutes later and it was still closed. When I called the number on the door I was told by the woman who answered that she would be another 45 minutes. I told her that this was my second trip to this store and both times were closed and that I wouldn't be back, and that this was no way to run a business if she wanted repeat customers. She then said she wasn't the owner--go figure. I don't how much the owner is paying her help, but whatever it is, it's too much. It's too bad, because I love buying old furniture and making it look new or repurposing it for something else. Guess I'll be going to one of the other consignment shops in the area. read more
