The order has never been wrong, always delivered in a timely fashion by a friendly young man who gives all appearances of constantly having good days and seemingly enjoys his job... Everyday! It is a pleasure to give them my business because they make things very easy and so, I definitely order more frequently. 10 years ago I didn't know what hibachi was and never would've thought myself to be a sushi lover (I hated every kind of seafood)... For Dekalb, I would say this place is okay to satisfy a sushi craving. I actually use to live a 2-minute walk from this place so it was a nice place to get sushi for me. It has decent prices and quick service. Overall, the sushi is moderately above the kind of "sushi" you get from Jewel or Dominick's in quality. Its surprising how fresh the ingredients are considering its surrounded by cornfields. The hibachi is not bad. I actually prefer the hibachi over the sushi. I really enjoyed the steak and scallop. I mean its not like Domo 777 or anything, but it works. Overall, this place is OK if you don't feel like driving to Geneva or Naperville for some 4 to 5-star sushi. read more

Had the hibachi chicken and shrimp, fried rice, salad. Pros: very quick, salad dressing was tasty, cheap compared to most hibachi. Cons: cut out the soup and salad from the classic dinner to make up for price, not very much flavor, not the best quality of proteins. Rushed not friendly service. In the end I would eat here again but just do the chicken hibachi and spend the extra on a sushi roll. read more

The staff is friendly and the restaurant has a relaxed and clean atmosphere, great for a quick bite to eat or catching up with a friend. I had a sushi delivery this past weekend and it was awesome to be able to have sushi in my very own dining room since I don't know if I'd ever attempt making it myself! I ordered online which was quick and easy. The only slight annoyance was that I just wanted two types of rolls and my order was less than $10, but they require a minimum purchase of $10, so I ordered another type. I probably eat at FushiYami at least twice a month. FushiYami is in a strip mall dubbed the Junction right off of Lincoln Highway and right in NIU campus. The eating space is booths in the main room and tables in the front area. This is an order at the counter restaurant. FushiYami is clean and pleasantly decorated. Would I bring kids here....maybe. During the semesters you will see a good deal of students anyways. FushiYami did not seem Japanese owned and operated, not that this is any type of requirement of course. I dislike the typical Chinese restaurant cheap wood chopsticks that never break clean. The soda machine, plastic ware, and paper napkins shows that FushiYami is targeting carry-out and college students more than dine-in. It used to be all Styrofoam, paper napkins, plastic cups, and disposable utensils. Awhile ago they started serving dine-in food on non-disposable plates. I do prefer to sit down while deciding on the menu. Although I consider FushiYami my "7 minute drive to get some quick sushi", in those cases I'm not looking for a sit down restaurant. The menus prices are fair considering the scale of this restaurant. I actually prefer their hibachi. The steak hibachi with their sauce and the ginger sauce is one of my favorites. You can choose between white and fried rice but I personally think the white rice is best with the steak hibachi. The hibachi side veggies are also good although I noticed (sadly) they have been cutting back on the amount of zucchini you get. I also frequent the una-q (eel) and spicy tuna unamaki. The una-q is usually very good. The spicy tuna and salmon are ok but are hardly spicy at all. I've also tried the yakisoba which was also decent. FushiYami has started offering more choices since they first opened, including some noodle offerings as well. **The last time we ate at FushiYami the una-q was not so good. I was pretty apparent that their eel was not the usual quality. I'm hoping that this is a one time issue!** read more

I grew up eating at places like Onami's, a West Coast sushi buffet. Since moving to the Midwest, I have found few places to cure my cravings. Fushi Yami popped up like a god-send. Their spider crab rolls are excellent and their hibachi is spot-on. Occassionally they will put too much oil in their fried rice, but it still tastes good. The owners did not skimp on desserts or drinks either. Their ice cream bon bons are fantastic, as well as the assorted Asian candies available for purchase. As a tip-of-the-hat to this establishment, I took my cousin to Fushi Yami last night. She had never eaten sushi before and I recommended the tempura shrimp roll. After dinner I was informed she is hooked on sushi, and could not wait to come back and try more. This is a great, casual place to take a date for dinner, or to relax after finals. They have a large, semi-private seating area towards the front for parties, high-top tables and booths for couples, as well as a few larger seating arrangements for less formal groups. As wonderful as they are, I only give them four stars because they are not the best sushi house I have ever been to, though they are the best I have had since leaving the West Coast. read more

This is my last favorite steak house in all of DeKalb. Would never recommend haven't been since my sophomore year since they gave me a to go box of shrimp hibachi where the shrimps were literally full of their own fecal matter. Each and every last shrimp was full of shit !!!! I called to let them know I wasn't eating it bright it back to them and they did nothing to fix their shitty shrimps. gross that they'd really even serve that to people. read more

If you know Dekalb's super wide variety of midwest middle-american burgerland, then you can bet I FLIPPED OUT when this fine new eatery opened. I started by eating their chicken/shrimp hibachi weekly after my long class as the ultimate dinner treat. It's that good. It's portioned well, and I really love their pinku sauce to dip grilled zucchini and onions into. I've eventually expanded into some of their rolls: For only $4 their California rolls are fresh, crunchy and tasty--a great bargain for 8 rolls with ginger and wasabi. I've also had their almost-too-expensive, super delicious cooked rolls for $10 like Crazy, and Spicy Tempura Shrimp. They seem to be doing well and have recently doubled their menu items and created a nice vegetarian menu in the process. I know I've only had cooked items from here. I've had fresh sushi before, but that was a while ago. Every time I go to eat it now I hear my crazy mother's voice in my head, she watches way too much "Monsters Inside Me." But for what it's worth their cooked rolls and hibachi are delicious, and I will probably eventually have something raw. read more

I really wouldn't recommend delivery. I've had very bad experiences. I had a delivery and the guy smokes so my sushi tasted like cigarettes when I got it... the second delivery the sushi was all smashed and tasted like it had sat out for days. I did however go into the restaurant and can say that it's decent but not very good quality. If you plan to get sushi from here make sure to go inside and eat there because it's terrible if you order it for delivery. read more

Fushi Yami offers a solid mix of maki and nigiri and is surprisingly good for the area's first Japanese restaurant. Prices are extremely reasonable. We had three in our group and were able to get drinks (soft only), three appetizers and four rolls for around $40. To my surprise -- and not pleasantly -- our first course arrived on Styrofoam dishes. Perhaps a way to save money, it didn't do much for the ambiance. But, if it helps keep the costs down, I won't complain too much. The miso soup was good, the fried spring rolls were what you would expect and the Eda mame was standard, if lacking on the salt. The rolls we ordered represented a good range -- California, Philadelphia and the chef's special "Fire Cracker." While the first two were good, the Fire Cracker was so delicious, we ended up ordering a second. Tempura crumbs are wrapped in the rice and seaweed and topped with tuna. Generous helpings of unagi sauce and spicy mayo helped the roll live up to the Fire portion of its name. The combination of crunchy tempura and tender tuna created an interesting play of textures. Some recent Japanese touches include a few flavors of Mochi, a dessert delicacy of ice cream wrapped in coating made from rice. If you're a DeKalb-area resident or find yourself in the area, it's worth a trip. read more

Sorry to say I live in DeKalb and I disagree with any other reviewer who exclaims, "Sushi came to DeKalb." This place serves sushi by name only. They may do better if they take it off the menu completely. This is very mediocre sushi and I would question how fresh any of it is. In their defense I will say that it is inexpensive and made very quickly. I've eaten here twice now, once when it first opened and now approximately two years later. I was hoping for improvement and it's still the same. If you are looking for sushi and don't mind driving 30-60 minutes away, you should do it. If you're desperate for a sushi fix, this will work. As for me, I'm still waiting for good sushi to arrive in DeKalb. read more

yes ladies and gents, good OI Dekalb finally has a sushi joint! The Spicy Crunchy White Tuna roll is delicious as well as the chicken hibachi fried rice. Everything is moderately priced with an average of $5 per roll. Don't expect this to be a nice sit down restaurant however, its considered express (kinda like panda express) so its all served in Styrofoam plates and such. Its not sushi like the city but not a bad start for dekalb. Go ahead and give it a try! read more

Big portions of hibachi and rice, made to order and the fried rice is really good. Large pieces of meat and veggies (and much cheaper than their sister hibachi restaurant next door). Prices are fair and they deliver to Sycamore and Cortland, which is a plus. The beef can be hit or miss - sometimes overcooked - but it's seasoned well. The house salad with the ginger dressing is good. I'm not a fan of sushi, but my husband and daughter think it's ok here. Drinks can be costly, but we always get the hot tea or just water. I'm a big fan of the ginger sauce and pinku sauce, which they charge for extras. Glad to have the variety in the area and another place that delivers. read more

I tried the hibachi steak lunch. OMGosh, so good. The steak was medium rare, I got veggies that were sauteed, and fried rice. I'm not sure what they put on the fried rice, but it was sweet tasting and delicious. If you're watching what you eat, I would suggest the steamed white rice. Let me start off by saying that I do infact love this place. The chicken hibachi is always on point, and the sushi quality is reasonable for dekalb. The restaurant is also reasonably priced, and offers quick delivery. Fushi yami has in the past, slighted me before when ordering gyoza , salads and etc, as I don't think that they have standardized portions, and sizes might be up to the cook's discretion. However I was slightly disappointed in my recent order of aged tofu(deep fried tofu). The item is priced at $4.50, which is pretty cheap, however what was even cheaper was the portion size that I received. I have ordered this item several times before, and usually received one sliced up brick of tofu, cut into thick chunks. About 14-18 thick cubes of delicious fried tofu. That was not the case this time. It looked as if they had run out of tofu to make a full order, and instead of calling me to say that the item was no longer in stock; they simply cut what they had into really thin squares of 5-6 pieces. I was kinda bummed and a little bitter because I LOOOOVVVEE tofu, and (secretly wanted it more than the chicken hibachi I ordered)and I know what the usual potion looks, and normally have enough for the next day. Oh well! I will still order from here as it is the only Japanese food place that delivers. On a good note, that food arrived hot and quickly and the chicken hibachi was delicious!!!!! read more

It's just okay, I used to be so excited about this place but they skimp with a few of my orders and the guy tried to trick me by making the softshell crab look bigger and more pronounced than it is by placing it more towards the edge so when he cuts it, it would stand up higher and fuller when there is no softshell crab at all in the middle, hence I'm just eating rice and some fillers. I think that's shady and crude. I will go on to say there are pluses I do remember from this place and it's that I like the firecracker roll, tiger roll, little monster, and dragon roll.... it's fast food meets sushi made by Chinese & Mexican people...it's a filler! read more

Decided to try this place out because I had a huge sushi craving. Rolls are ehh, but that "spicy yellow tail' just sucked, it was a total joke. It was neither spicy, and had no scallions in the roll. The spicy tuna was tuna with spicy mayo. Don't call your tempura roll tempura, it was a basic fried shrimp in the roll. Your rolls are sloppy and fall apart. This is the McDonalds of sushi. read more
