Food: the spicy tonkotsu ramen was good, the broth was rich however I've been recently spoiled by ichiran in Japan. Tatsu tonkotsu ramen is an improvement than surrounding ramen places we've had in Hoffman and Schaumburg area, despite this there's still room to grow their recipe and make it truly standout and make it my go to ramen spot One con that stood out to me that didn't have todo with my flavor preferences was the ramen was way too hot (temperature wise), it was so hot that the pork meat after a 10-15 mins became totally dried out and tough. Tatsu Ramen is in Elgin and I attempted to eat here a couple of times but failed. We arrived as soon as they opened for dinner. It was quiet and empty inside so service was speedy. The menu was really simple and I had the vegetable ramen. I also tried the spicy vegetable ramen and it was so spicy but in a good way. The ramen came to the table one notch below boiling hot. It took awhile to really get at it, but once it cooled to a comfortable level it was quite soothing. The broth was way better than I expected it to be for a vegan base. It was rich, flavorful, and slightly creamy with a velvety finish. The portion size was huge with plenty of vegetables and noodles packed in. 10/14/23 - We were on our way back from LaCrosse Wi trying to find a hot bowl of ramen on the way back to Chicago. The weather is getting chilly perfect weather for a hot bowl of ramen. We found Tatsu in Elgin. We both ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen. The Tonkatsu ramen broth is a rich pork broth that was absolutely amazing. The rich broth cooks for 30hrs. The ramen was very good w/ramen noodles, green onions, bamboo shoots & a boiled egg. I would go back again if in the neighborhood, but Elgin is a bit of a trek from Chicago. read more

So happy to finally try this place. Ramen was 100% legit. Ordered the kara-age and tonkatsu ramen with extra noodles on the side. The chicken Kara-age was cooked just right- seasoned nicely with the right amount of crunch to it. The tonkatsu ramen was served nice and hot, rich and flavorful. I also appreciated how the soft eggs were cooked just right- cuz an overcooked egg can just ruin the ramen experience. Service was great and our waiter made little training chopsticks for our 4 year child- who was able to eat his whole meal with those chopstick and looked so proud doing so. Ok so - we have been here many times since it's opened and, being totally honest, we have never really liked their ramen. We are used to ramen from Sushi Kushi 4 U in Lake Zurich and Ramendobo in Cary (not to mention the ramen from Mitsuwa Marketplace). Anyway, the ramen has always been just "ok". Tatsu has always had AMAZING beef curry and other dishes like their bao buns (both the pork and karage chicken). That said, last time we were here I had the Oyakodon (I believe is what it was called) and it was SO GOOD. Husband had the shoyu ramen and that was also great. This time, since I really like the beef curry, I decided to try the karage chicken curry ramen. Ya'll - I can't even explain how good this was. WOW. This is, hands down, the best thing I've had from here. Two things you should know: One - I don't give five stars to restaurants very often (only 15 out of 150-ish). And Two - I had gastric sleeve surgery in March of '22. I eat like a bird. Seriously, one regular meal will last me 4 meals (that's when I have had enough and I give it to my kids or husband). My husband and I had our date night here on a Wednesday night. Like others have said, the place is small but it wasn't loud or crowded. My husband ordered the Taiwan Ramen. He said it was amazing. I ordered the Katsu Don. It. Was. Incredible. It is the reason I am giving a five star review. The sauce was so good I am still thinking about it and the eggs... oh, Lord... the eggs. Chef kiss. I ate a little that night and the next day for breakfast and for lunch (it was still delicious) then I gave it to my husband who also thought it was delectable! We were excited to try this casual dining ramen restaurant and we came for Friday early dinner and the restaurant has 8-9 tables inside and seating along the front window. It's minimally staffed with two people but the food came out very quickly. The restaurant also got full. We loved the apps we got! The ramen is delicious although a bit salty for our tastes. The ramen bowl at least is very large for a good price and we had a lot of left overs. The total for two with 3 appetizers and 2 ramen came out to around $50 not including tip. read more

2nd visit: Came here with a large group and tried a number of different things. Items that were great before were still great, but not everything is equally good. Nagoya and miso ramen were pretty bland. Croquettes were okay, but nothing special. We were in the area at the right time of day. Tatsu Ramen opened at 3pm and we arrived around 4pm. The dining area is very cozy, they were playing Michael Jackson background music so you really don't hear anyone else's conversations which is nice. The dining room was very clean and we had plenty of room at our table. We ordered the Bao Bun appetizer (2pc tender braised cha-shu in a steamed bun with green onion) we did not wait long for them. They were stuffed really full with meat, I had to eat three pieces of meat out of mine before I could even pick it up. The meat had the perfect balance of tender and chewy. I liked when I took a bite the piece of meat broke off very easily and was not messy at all. The sauce was sweet and good but it is not even needed, the meat is seasoned very well! My husband ordered the Taiwan Ramen because he really loves the ground meat in his Ramen. It was very spicy for him, but he says it was worth it! The broth was very flavorful and the ramen was very temperature hot but that is what we expect. I had the Tonkotsu Ramen. The eggs were yummy and the broth was good but could use a little more seasoning. The meat was a little more chewy then I was hoping for, but still very flavorful. The noodles were not as chewy as I prefer but still amazing. It is worth coming back here to eat, we will be back for sure. I can't speak for their in-house service since I only ordered delivery from here, but their food was better than I thought. I ordered a katsu curry, and I was very surprised by the large serving size. The pork katsu was very thick and tasty. Curry was okay, not too exceptional, but it was yummy with the katsu. I was pleasantly surprised by Tatsu. It took a little while to take our order but once our order was taken the food came out fast. The karaage chicken was not the usual flavor I am used to, I probably wouldn't order it again. The ramen is another story. I ordered the spicy tonkatsu ramen, it had a nice spice level and good flavor. My wife got the curry ramen and again the flavor was spot on. We'd both order them again. My son ordered the curry and he loved it. I make Japanese curry at home all the time and he said Tatsu's curry was better. I really had high hopes for this place. I was excited seeing all the rave reviews, and have been wanting to come for a few weeks now. Unfortunately this place didn't live up to the hype for me. The Ramen wasn't hot when it was served, the broth lacked flavor, and there wasn't enough pork. Disappointed for $13.50... The bao buns also took longer to arrive than the ramen, and those were supposed to be our appetizer. Really wanted to try their karrage as well, but they apparently had ran out before we arrive. Total key down. Overall, I'd say there are far better places, just sucks cuz this spot is literally in my backyard 5 minutes away. Oh well. Won't get returning. My family and I went here on a Friday (around 11am-12pm) and it wasn't busy. We tried coming here on Saturday before around the same time, but they do not open until 3pm that day (and are closed on Sundays - check their hours on their Facebook page in case they change times). It was my first time eating at the restaurant as we used to order To Go a few times when it first opened a few years ago. To Go is good but even better to eat fresh here. It's a small, cozy place with a couple booths, tables, and window seating facing outside with stools. We were seated at a booth for 3, and not many customers were there when my family and I arrived, but soon after it started to fill up. It's not too crowded even with a lot of people so you can still eat comfortably. * Service - our waitress was kind, and our food was served quickly. She checked in with us regularly and explained menu items well. * Food: we all ordered ramen (Nagoya, Curry, and Tonkatsu) - all our dishes were delicious and very filling. I had the Curry Ramen (2 big chicken karage pieces, lettuce, green onions, and 2 soft boiled eggs), and it was really good. * Curry broth is slightly thick, and flavor was Savory amd good blend of spices * Chicken karage pieces were big and seasoned well * if left too long in broth, it can be difficult to cut through the meat (becomes soft/skin slightly soggy due to the heat), so be careful as it can be very hot. It's still very delicious as I love karage, and it blended well with other ingredients. * Noodles had good texture, slightly chewy yet soft enough to eat and digest. It coats very well with curry broth. * Price/value - pricing is reasonable for ramen, and value is decent as the amount in each ramen bowl is generous and will keep you full (may get food coma like me). I recommend not eating too much beforehand if you decide to come here and get their ramen. Overall, it's a great place for ramen in Elgin, and I recommend eating there if you can to get the best experience of eating the ramen fresh. This is a follow up to a previous review. I have added a star as the food is consistently delicious and the staff is fantastic. They have worked with me to usher me into the world of ramen. I still enjoy my regular order of chicken teriyaki bowl from time to time but I have also tried the tonkatsu ramen and Nagoya ramen ... legendary! And you get a LOT of food! Coming from the city, this place is very good. Portion size is huge, but not at the expense of taste and quality. I got the katsu curry. This is comparable to places in Japan, though the pork is a bit thicker cut than classic, still delicious. The Bao's have a massive portion of tasty bbq pork. Karaage is some of the best I've had in Chicagoland with a horesradish sauce that's light and not incredibly heavy. Will come again. read more

Went here with my oldest yesterday. We love ramen and eat it often and were so excited to get a ramen place closer to home. We both absolutely loved it. The place is clean, the staff is friendly, and there's outdoor seating. We ordered bao buns, miso ramen with extra chashu, and spicy miso ramen extra spicy. The bao buns were really good, I love the cook on the pork, and the green onion really brightened it up. Miso ramen and spicy miso ramen were both excellent. The chashu is tender, eggs have a perfect custard texture, and the extra spiciness gave it a good heat that wasn't overbearing, but still enough to get my heat fix. I also like the thin slices on the fish cakes. I feel like a lot of places usually do thick slices, and texture wise I think the thin slices are better. Yuzu Soda: 5 stars - nostalgia value, very good. Just as I remembered from my childhood. Chicken Karaage: 3 stars - a little dry and too much marinaded flavor. Skin was nice and crispy. Tonkotsu Ramen: 4.5 stars - Usually I like more broth-like ramen like soy or shio flavor. But I really liked this Tonkotsu soup. Milky texture, not super thick or heavy. Chasiu was very soft and juicy, but there was a few chunks of fat part which maybe some people are not fan of, but I personally loved it. I think it is very close to 5 stars! Nagoya Ramen: 4 stars - My wife ordered this one. It's a big stack of pepper-spicy vegetable stir fry on top. Soup was chicken base, I think. I am personally pretty weak to spicy ness, but I liked this one. It is bigger portion from other ones, but spicy vegetable did push us to keep going! Spicy Miso Ramen: 4 stars - I am weak to this type of spicy ness, so I just tasted a little from my friend's order. But if I can take out spicy ness out of soup, I would enjoy the rich flavor of miso. So next time I would love to try simple miso ramen. Matcha tiramisu: 1 star - just frozen chunk.
