Checked out this ramen place for lunch in DeKalb. It has a pretty boring location in a strip mall but it's better than it looks. Nami specializes in Asian noodles. Has a lot of big bowls of various things for meat eaters or if eating plant based. The prices aren't bad with the large portions. At lunch it wasn't that busy. It's kind of an unassuming place. This is in a strip mall with a grocery store. A place that's kind of easy to miss. It's about $13 for a bowl of ramen. Has lots to choose from. I got the Vegetable Ramen. This has lots of things including bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, cabbage, corn, green onions, mushrooms, and pickled ginger, but be sure to ask to make it vegetarian. It seems they use fish flakes. There's lots of other menu options including stir fried ramen. For sure it's one of the best Asian restaurants in town, which isn't hard to achieve, because there aren't many around here. Appetizers were the best part of our meal Restaurant is clean & new We started with the crab filled wontons & Tempura Shrimp. They were both good, especially the crab wontons. I didn't like the soy sauce that came with the shrimp. We both had the seafood ramen bowl. The picture shows larger crab meat & scallops. In actuality there were 2 tiny pieces of crab meat & 3 minuscule scallops. Also had 3 medium sized shrimp. Loaded with sprouts which had an overwhelming flavor that wasn't good. We passed by a grand opening sign in DeKalb and knew we had to stop by when we saw it was a ramen restaurant. And we don't regret it one bit because Nami is delicious! We ordered the salt and pepper squid, char siu and red curry ramens, and two different boba drinks. We were extremely impressed by everything we tried. The portions for the ramens and drinks were huge. The char siu ramen came with delicious charred pork and the red curry ramen was spicy and filling. The salt and pepper squid was probably my favorite bite - it was crispy and so flavorful. The drinks were great as well. Definitely try the strawberry yakult. There's truly no ramen or boba in DeKalb that comes close. The service was also excellent. When we walked in there were no other guests, but the restaurant started filling up by the time we left. There was only one waitress and she was very attentive and friendly. They had no problems answering questions and accommodating for each of their guests. The restaurant has an extremely luxurious feel inside. The music is not too loud. The seating is comfortable. The tables are well lit. Honestly, my wife and I both think this is the best restaurant in DeKalb. We've gotten this place take out twice getting different things both times and there wasn't a thing we got that wasn't excellent. It is always exciting to have a new restaurant in the area however it is always disappointing to discover that only after a couple of weeks of the opening , the dishes are not the same they were presented at the beginning to bring in customers. The example is salt and pepper squid: lightly breaded and beautifully presented in the beginning judging by the previous photo and over-breaded tasteless dish served to me. Exasperated by my squid, I asked for the salted cumber described as served in sesame oil. I was served cold and mushy vegetable from the refrigerator that did not taste like fresh cucumber. The service was very rushed, it certainly gives you a vibe of the fast food place where you have to be in and out. My 3 stars go for the ramen itself that my friend ordered and liked. Have been looking for a Ramen shop away from the city. The ramen was served properly, at the correct temperature with the correct sides. I had a Char Siu Pork Bun, Char Siu Ramen and a side of Kimchi. Noodles were chewy with right texture and pull. Broth was heavenly with the right balance of salt/umami and the Char Siu pork has a lot of flavor. The Char Siu Pork Bun had exceptional flavor, wasn't too salty, or sweet. I could taste the mayo and house made sauce. The bun was light and airy. The Kimchi is made in house, spicy but balanced that you could taste the ginger, onion, garlic and carrot. The ramen is amazing and they make the tapioca for the bubble tea fresh when they open (give them an hour from open to have it ready if you're ordering ahead). Ordered spicy miso ramen via a delivery service. I live about 3 minutes away by car, but the broth was cold to lukewarm. Seemed like it had been sitting for a long time. This was on a Saturday night so maybe they were busy? I don't know. Noodles were undercooked too. There was a whole boiled egg, that was also cold. I don't know if pouring the broth over the noodles cooled it down too much or what. I would have preferred a $3 instant ramen to this. read more
