I've been visiting this record store (in it's several locations) for about 20 years now and it's…read morenever let me down. The bargains aren't as prevalent as they used to be pre-Ebay and Discogs, but there are still some deals to be had. The main thing about this store is that the owner, Sam, is a condition guy. He really only buys records that are in good shape. The jacket may be torn to shreds, but the disc inside will be near perfect, and those with shredded jackets are usually in his dollar bin. Every time I walk into this store I find something I've been looking for all over the place. He's got a great records throughout from his dollar bin to his collectibles section, you're sure to find something (if not several things) to suit your fancy. Downtown Records remains one of my top stores in the US. The only down side is that due to the owner's real occupation he's only open on Saturdays and closes up completely for tax season.

Here are some major complaints I have. 1) The store is run like a pawn shop and not a hobbyist store. From the bikes, to the dirty birdcage. 2) The quality of the products is questionable at best. The items are not stored properly, often in a pile inside or outside of the store. The items themselves are often damaged. I had purchased a preowned switch lite on layaway which was scratched and it took over a month to get a different one. 3) The service is terrible because you will be in an incredibly confined location surrounded by junk and she will spend 30 minutes helping the customer who came in after you before helping you. You will also wait for an incredibly long time (weeks to months) to get anything if you try to order it through this store. 4) The pricing is awful. I had asked for an exchange. The original switch lite for a screen protector and a switch lite without scratches, and instead I received, paying well over an additional $90, a cheap rubber casing I didn't ask for, rubber skin for the switch lite which I didn't ask for, a micro SD card, and the replacement switch. You will pay next to full price for used items. 5) THERE ARE FAKES SOLD HERE. The micro-SD card I mentioned in #5 was not the 256 GB listed, but a fake which was around 10 GB at best. It corrupted my save data and has forced me to abandon long-term saves (playing for months) for Animal Crossing New Horizons and more. When confronted she only gave me $30 (out of the aforementioned $90) and I was forced to purchase a functional micro-SD card elsewhere. BUYER BEWARE.

He got very excited and accidentally knocked one of the wooden shelves down off the case when he was removing one of the books. No damage was done and there was very little mess. I went to clean it up. But, one of the employees walked over first, to put the shelf back. Standing behind her, I apologized. And she did not say a word. She completely ignored me. Just kept aggressively shoving the shelf back into its place and walked away without a word, very clearly agitated that my son had done something that cost her 30 seconds out of her day. So I coralled my toddler, paid for our books, and quickly got out of there. Did not feel welcome with my toddler at all. In the kids section of a chain book store. Apparently kids aren't allowed to be kids there? Luckily the check-out lady was very nice!

It's an old-fashioned, brick and mortar CD store (although in this case the building is covered in narrow wood shingles). It specializes in old time and bluegrass music and is located centrally in the adorable little mountain music town of Floyd, VA. The young man manning the store on the day I strolled in was very personable and knowledgeable, and (since I'm writing this post during the Covid-19 pandemic), I'll add that he was wearing his mask the entire time I shopped, (as was I). I've hardly shopped at all these past months but I was so charmed by this store, I decided to support them and stimulate the general economy. In that spirit, I bought the following CDs: The Tony Rice Unit - Manzanita, Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys - Man of Constant Sorrow, Anna & Elizabeth - free dirt, and the Shelor-Blackard Family, which I chose from the stores excellent field recording selection. The tables in the cafe aren't exactly comfortable or inviting, so I'm glad we didn't stay long. I've been to much better layouts as far as the cafe is concerned. Decent selection of new fiction too.

Had some extra time on my hands while waiting for the pup at the vet. Went to B&N to get some work…read moredone. I was hoping for a more comfortable work area, but had to sit in the empty cafe. Surprised to not see any oversized chairs anywhere in the store. Had issues connecting to WiFi so I just ended up using my phone's hotspot. Overall it was an ok experience. It served its purpose. If I have to return to the area I'll try a local place. Probably my fault from the start.
