This place knocked my socks off! Holy selection! I mean, you expect that kind of thing from a place like Holiday Market...but a Liquor Store that's open late and has a selection of beer beyond the predictable domestics? AND even a decent selection of wines and scotches?! AND Faygo?! AND Better Made Chips?! Some beers that I recall: Some great imported German beers in their selection- Weinstephaner, Ayinger, Hofbrau, Konigen Pilsner... various Sierra Nevadas- even my personal favorite "Glissade" Sierra Nevada, various Bell's seasonal brews, Prohibition Ales from San Francisco...the list is endless! Although beer is certainly the main focus here, wine is not forgotten either. They have some decent, not remarkable but better "than most liquor stores" selection. Get this- if what you're looking for is not in there, there's a dry erase board when you walk in to add your own beer suggestions. How cool is that?! They also a limited selection of produce- bananas, lemons, limes, grapefruit, even lettuce...the typical fridge staples are there too: Ketchup, Mustard, PB&J, etc...Plus I guess you can pay your Consumers Energy bill there too. Until yesterday all my experiences at this shop were great. I stopped in to see if they had a certain whiskey. I asked the clerk and after uber condescendingly correcting my pronunciation he pointed to it. I mentioned how nice I thought it was and he simply said he didn't like it. Fair enough. I then asked a few more questions and he just seemed totally disinterested. Kind of like I was bothering him, Perhaps he drew the short straw and had to work Sunday. Not my problem. Way to blow an $80 sale. In the future I will patronize liquor shops that at least try to sell me something or act interested in my business. 3 stars because of the good staff who work at and own this shop. Awful!! I called yesterday to see if they had Blondies by Jenny. We drove an hour to get to this store to buy 12 bottles of Blondies. We got here a little before they opened and no one was was here. No worries- we could wait until 11:00am. It is now 11:20am and there is no one in sight. No answer on the phone, nothing. I'm one of four customers that came today and left because the store was not open. They lost a sale with 12 bottles of Blondies. (I will be reaching out to the distributor as well.) If you're wondering where to get cases of made-with-real-sugar Mexican coke (or Sprite, Fanta and Pepsi), look no further!! Back in the day I had to time my visits juuuust right, for if I went too late in the week, they'd be out. Now they must have a new distributor, because no matter when I go, there are always a few cases in the back. Score! G S is an even better experience thanks to the recent face lift. Friendly and family-owned, it's my absolute favorite place in the hood to procure whiskeys, scotches and bourbons. They have quite an extensive selection and you'll always discover something new (you'll even learn a thing or two about the grains used and the aging process). Oh don't worry, they have a vast array of other spirits so if you can't take the peat, you'll still be with the itchin'...to buy some really good gin, Michigan beer, etc. Out of milk or craving an apple at 11pm? Towards the front, there's a small selection of grocery items and some fruit (not just citrus!). Parking isn't always so easy but keep trying. It's a small strip and fills up fast, but usually the turnover is just as fast so I've never done more than one drive-by before a spot opened up. read more

I hate to admit it, but G S has kind of been my in between stop if I can't get to 8 Degrees or ml.. G S is definitely a good craft beer spot to hit. I have been lucky the last handful of times scoring limited released beer, so I am becoming more of a regular. It's a bit crammed in the store. The beer is a bit unorganized as well. They have stacks of craft beer cases in the back, on shelves and more beer scattered on end caps. Their selection is pretty good for a small beer & liquor store. As for pricing comparison, I'm not entirely sure yet. I think their prices tend to be on the higher side based on a couple of purchases I've made. I only pick up something else when I come in for a limited release beer. The staff (owners?) are very nice. They are always happy to help. Parking can be tricky, just like a lot of businesses along Woodward. If you visit when the beer truck is dropping off, you're in for a challenge getting in or out. So, beware on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Bud Light truck was there around 5pm on a Thursday. 3.5 stars for great beer selection and staff. read more

This place is a real hole in the wall from the outside. Driving by you would never imagine the gem of a beer selection that is contained inside. The owner, John, takes pride in having one of the best selection of beer in Royal Oak (only Holiday Market is better) and will order any beer that is distributed within Michigan upon request. This place has been family owned for 33 years. John's mother and sisters will be happy to help you check out. Ask for beer recommendation from John; he's tried every one in the shop. I rated this a 5 stars, because as far as beer selection, it really is. Now, I had a chance to speak with the owner, Jon, tonight, and he is also a really nice guy, with a clear passion for beer, and making the customer happy. Now, he claims he's better than Holiday Market for beer and liquor, and I think he might be as good as. I can recall seeing a few beers in Holiday that aren't in his store, but I think he's got the one up on prices. To me, that's more important. And as the other reviews mentioned, he will seek out any beer that's distributed here upon request. He's definitely got my business from Holiday from now on. read more

I can't really add much to the G S Market Review except to say that I agree with Greg on all fronts but one--I don't think G S is a good option as far as prices go. I used to go here on a very regular basis because I love trying new beers and John is a very warm-hearted and helpful guy--he makes you feel special when you walk into his store, and it is absolutely true that he'll give you a decent recommendation and get a special shipment of any beer you're looking for that he doesn't already have (I wonder whether Holiday would do that if I asked). The problem I have though, and the reason I've pretty much stopped going, is that I'm pretty sure certain beer selections are up-priced by as much as $1-2, which isn't a ton, but when we're talking about a 6-pack that's regularly priced at around $10, that's a 10-20% increase, which is pretty substantial. I've found many of the beers that I enjoy drinking at Holiday Market with a lower price tag. And truth be told, the guy they recently posted in the beer section of Holiday Market is incredibly knowledgeable about his beers. Either way, this is a totally guilt-free local business anyone looking for a good or hard-to-find beer would do well to support. I hope they stick around for a long time and, now that I've written this review, I kind of miss the place and want to go back. N.B. I believe there's a $10 minimum on credit card charges. read more

First of all, I love the variety of beer here. I've been going here for years and it's open later than the other places around there. The one thing I really dislike about this place is that the beer trucks block all the entrances and parking spots when they do thier deliveries. There's one spot for a beertruck to park out of the way: The beer truck could park along side the flower/birdbath shop. The thing is, the beertruck drivers have to get out of there fast, and that spot i described is time consuming to get out of which the beer distributors don't like. The bottle/can return cart is ALWAYS overflowing at ALL HOURS OF THE DAY. I have come to this market all hours of the day throughout the years. It has never been empty or even half empty. John and the employees take the best parking spots which is annoying, they could park on the side of the place. It's like just chill out and stop worrying that your car will get stolen already. read more

I moved out to the Royal Oak area about a year ago. In my hunting for a store that carried Dragon's Milk beer, I stumbled upon G S Market. It was late nearly one in the morning and was surprised that any store was even open in the area. I went in looking for some average grocery store beer to quench my after work thirst. I was shocked at the selection, nearly overwhelmed by it. I don't remember what I picked up that night but I made smart-ass remark about him not carrying Dragon's Milk. John, the owner, remarked, "Oh its in door 18," or some such. John is the kind of guy that knows beer. He remembers what you like and makes pretty good recommendations. In the year since I started buying my beer at G S, John has turned me onto so many good beers. Samichlaus, Raison D etre, The Oracle, Mackinson XXX Stout and so many more. He has just finished remodeling his store and has plans to have the largest selection of beer in Michigan. John and his store G S Market is an easily overlooked gem in Royal Oak. If you like a store with a good selection, an owner who will remember your name your likes and dislikes and will do his damnest to find you any beer you may want ...give G S Market a visit. You won't be disappointed. read more
