Dave and his team have done two jobs for us. First, they replaced the vinyl seats on six dining rooms chairs with leather. Then, with the left-over leather -- you have to purchase a full hide -- they re-upholstered two counter-top chairs that had previously been covered with "bonded leather." The result was outstanding. Gabel's isn't cheap, nor should it be. They do great work. What we have now is much more attractive (and durable) than what we started with. We can't recommend them highly enough. read more

I can't stop looking at the Heywood Wakefield dresser that I just had refinished at Gabel's. It's really satisfying to see a piece of furniture transformed from something ordinary into something incredible. I bought this dresser on Craigslist and it was in pretty rough shape when I took it to them. Honestly, I didn't know how much they would be able to do with it, but I had no expectation that they would make it look brand new. They did. Not only did Gabel's meticulously sand and remove all of the old finish, inside and out, but they were even able to bleach out stains and water marks that had deeply penetrated the wood. Amazing. The pride that Gabel's takes in their work was evident in every interaction I had with them. They had me stop in at the shop twice to show me what they had done and to make sure I was happy with the color of the stain. I was fascinated on one of these occasions to watch Chris create a custom mix of stain without measuring anything. He added the pigments one by one until he had just the color he wanted. In the end, he was able to perfectly replicate the color and finish of an authentic Heywood Wakefield piece. That is when I realized these guys are not just craftsmen, they're artists. All of this would be more than enough to deserve a five star rating, but in addition, they're some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I took an old piano bench to Gabels that was my wife's grandmothers. It had been stored outside in Arizona for a few years and to get it in a car to bring it to Seattle my father-in-law took a hammer to it so it would fit in his car. With very little hope that anything could be done with this bench, I took it to Gabels. Upon first meeting they were very practical and were not to excited about the project. Upon completion, the final project is unreal. I do a lot of wood work on boats and finishing with varnishes and bright work so it was nice to see true professionals. They color checked the product with us before the final finish to make sure we got what we wanted. It looks great. One thing in the trades is the saying you get what you pay for and in this case that definitely matches. I will also say my final price came in a lot lower then my original estimate which is also nice. If you have a nice piece of furniture that you want restored right, take it to Gabels, you will be very happy you did. read more

I've had Gabel's refinish a number of pieces and they have always done an amazing job. They took a large oak desk that o foolishly stored in an unheated or cooled garage for over 5 years. It had been eaten by rates and warped terribly. It is fully restored and gorgeous!! I highly recommend them. Gabel's reupholstered 3 of my BoConcept barstools and I was very pleased with the work! For starters, if you want to get some furniture refinished, make sure you like your furniture and didn't buy it at IKEA. I say this because it's not cheap and you should only be fixing the furniture that you love and want to keep for decades. The staff at Gabel's will ask you several initial questions at the beginning as they want to get a feel for whether you have considered what it will take from a cost and time perspective. While this may be seen as negative by some, I think it's good because it allows both parties to be on the same page and not waste time. Once committed to the process, they guide you through every step and make it easy. Once you make your selections, they give an honest timeline and in my case beat their completion timeline. I would absolutely go to Gabel's again. read more

We've contacted Gabel's multiple times to get an estimate for a large bedroom set (solid maple). Both my husband and I have independently emailed Gabel and referenced each others emails. Gabel claimed he could provide a basic estimate from a set of photos but ghosted us after we sent them. We started emailing back in June, then my husband emailed in July. Gabel claimed he had never seen the email from my husband despite my following up two weeks and referencing his emails. Again no followup from Gabel despite following up again. We have both emailed for an estimate 3-4 times. read more

I have an office chair that I've had for twenty years. I've never found a new chair as comfortable as this one. It's perfect for me and the upholstery is fine, but it was structurally falling apart. Screws that held the arms to the seat and back were unscrewing themselves and the chair would fall apart while I was sitting in it. I took my chair to Gabel's and Chris looked at it. He verified that the threads the screws screwed into had not been stripped, and he tightened all the screws on the arms with an Allen wrench (hex key). Then I showed him that two of the four screws that held the metal base of the chair to the wooden seat were missing. He replaced those screws and screwed them in tight. I asked him how much to pay him for his time and he would not let me pay him. So, my chair is back together and I'm happily sitting in it now. I bought the right Allen wrench for 79 cents at Ace Hardware so I can tighten the screws if need be, and I'm sitting here writing this review without my chair falling apart. So, Chris saved me buying a new office chair for free. And that's as good as it gets. read more

Make sure you have everything in writing or an email. Described in detail (and with example photos) in person exactly what we were looking for with the owner. Came in the store on 3 separate times to discuss each stage along the way. We were shocked when we came to pick it up several months later that it was totally different than what we asked for. It was either not written down on the invoice or someone had neglected to mention it to us that they wouldn't be doing what we requested. It was difficult to get any responsibility taken for the miscommunication because we had discussed it in person and I did not have my own written proof. Don't be naive because it is a "family business" and document everything. We were still charged full price (over $2,600) even though it was not what we ordered or requested. A disappointment after waiting months for a one of a kind item that cannot be replaced. read more

A few months ago, my wife and I had Dave and Chris Gabel repair and refinish a china hutch and foot stool crafted in the 1930s or 1940s which had belonged to my wife's great grandmother. Being about 80 years old and having been in a Montana ranch house for the vast majority of that time, both were sorely in need of repairs and refinishing after decades of use. All I can really say of their finished product is WOW! We have six or seven similar pieces that are family heirlooms of sorts, and fully intend for the Gabel's to restore them as well. Both Dave and Chris were consummate professionals who listened to all of our needs and concerns and returned to us a very superior restoration. We never felt talked down toward and any questions we had were easily answered. The repairs were completed in a timely fashion and their communication with us about any stage of the process was simply great! The quoted price was spot on and reasonable for the amount repairs, material, and time that our furnishings needed to look, literally, darn near brand new! They even came to our home, on short notice, to finish some other repairs. This was an excellent experience, and from experience with other similar vendors, these guys are well above their colleagues in the restoration business. We just had a teak table with loose legs repaired at Gabel's. Everything was excellent - the workmanship, the explanation of the work they did, the price. In fact, the final price was lower than the estimate (which was already lower than an estimate from one of their competitors). When I took the table in I was given a tour of the workshop and was thoroughly impressed by the quality of all their work, whether repairing upholstery veneers which have lifted, or damaged wood. I'll add a photo to this review when I have a chance, but Gabel's did an AMAZING job on a family heirloom piece that my dad gave me a few years back in damaged condition. It took a long time to repair and cost a good chunk of change, but the results were incredible. The nearly 200-year-old dresser now makes everything else in our house look shabby. Another restorer gave a much lower bid after a very short phone call. I'm glad I followed up with Gabel's and asked more questions. Because the dresser was difficult to move, the owner even did a house call and spent nearly an hour looking it over. He gave me a thorough, honest assessment and quote that I really appreciated. It made me comfortable spending more than twice as much as I'd planned to get it done right. Now it is in the kind of exquisite condition that at least a few more generations of my family will be able to enjoy it, as well. Dave and his team repaired an antique chair that was one of a set of ten. The wood had split on a curve and splintered off. Even I could tell it was an advanced job. Dave could tell me what wood from what country and what decade it was from, wh oh I double checked with my father in law in South Carolina. It all checked out, so I took the severe damage and another slightly damaged chair in. They did a perfect job repairing both chairs so that you would have to hunt on hands and knees to find it. They matched the stain perfectly so that those two fit back in at the table with their 8 siblings. Gabel's isn't cheap, but if you're going to invest anything in old furniture, you might as well do it right. I am excited to be searching for fabric for an antique settee next. I am thrilled not to be supporting labor violators in China to get cheap furniture that isn't worth its shipping cost, and to keep our old furniture kicking, strongly and stylishly, instead. read more
