All I have to say is Louisiana better appreciate this place because I'm from Miami Florida and I was passing through here and I stopped to eat and let me tell you I've never tasted chicken like I've tasted chicken there and the Cajun rice was out of control plus the apple pie was great I love this place. My husband and I were tired and hungry after a long day of traveling in the rain. We were in the mood for some Cajun food and went first to Cajun Claws. It was very busy and very loud with live music, and had at least a 45 minute wait (on a Thursday night). Normally, a festive place would be our cup of tea, but not today. We saw that Gabe's Cajun Food was fairly closeby. It's a small place, not much fan fair, not loud, not so busy that we couldn't find a parking place. I ordered the 12 piece fried shrimp, onion rings, cole slaw, and water. My husband ordered the Cajun hamburger with cheese, fries, and water. My shrimp was delicious, hot, and crispy. The onion rings were overcooked, but they tasted good. The coleslaw was coleslaw, not special, and not bad. My husband's order came out cold. The cheese wasn't melted. He said there was no Cajun seasoning at all and that the burger tasted like meatloaf. I didn't get a picture of it because he returned it to the cashier. They sent it to the back, it was reheated and sent back out. No apologies were offered. We were surprised to see we were charged .30 each for water. I really wish businesses wouldn't do that. That seems so petty and nickle and dime-ish. Just include the price of our water/cups in with our order. I was going to give 3 stars simply because my shrimp and onion rings were good, but after seeing the .30 per cup was added, it's a one star finish. Our order costs $28.30 and wasn't great. The rice dressing is basically dirty rice ( a new term for me, I had to ask what it was thus labeling myself "outsider" instantly!) it was delicious! Never tasted dirty rice like this! I ate every last grain! The place itself is tiny,old slightly dirty but I wasn't uncomfortable. It's conveniently located right off I-10 so easy to find! After your chicken fix hop across the street to Candyland for some awesome homemade fudge! Was on vacation at the KOA in Scott and wanted to buy local. Found the website for Gabe's and realized it was just minutes from our location. Ordered the chicken strip meal with rice dressing. It was delish, tenders were big portions and tender and the rice dressing was totally Cajun. Ordered the fried liver because that was a childhood memory and it was exactly how my grandmother cooked it! My husband had the cheeseburger and it was perfectly cooked as well as seasoned. I had ordered a side red beans and rice but we didn't get it, which is ok, we were full with what we had and can get next time. The total amazements was the cheap price.... $19.00. It's always amusing to me when some folks expect a 5-star dining experience at a local hole-in-the-wall lunch counter, and are offended when they don't get it, perhaps because I grew up in one of those places.....but I digress. I've been in there a bunch of times both for the drive thru and also counter service inside and can't say I've ever really had a bad experience with the service, food or the wait times. But then I generally avoid rush times and take into consideration that when in Acadiana, you get the kind of service and respect your attitude deserves. If you're nice to folks down there and remember that you probably sound as funny to them as they do to you, usually they'll treat you accordingly. Is it a hole in the wall with locals their major clientele? Oh yes. Is the food the most fantastic ever? Oh no, but it's still pretty good. I usually get a shrimp poboy and fries or a shrimp dinner, because after all, I can get a hamburger anywhere. Haven't been disappointed with those choices yet. About a block off the interstate, easy off and easy back on. Give it a try, you'll probably like it. read more

The number of food safety violations this place could be wrote up for would create a novel! No hair restraints were worn by any employee. The man working the fries had a huge beard and I witnessed him clean his nose/face with his shirt. He had no gloves on or apron. The table I sat at was not clean so I had to wipe it down myself. The cashier was talking about how she was going to knock some other girls teeth out. Unprofessional, dirty, and not within the health code by a long shot! This place was full of locals when we stopped in. The reviews on here were mixed but we decided to try it out. The food for the most part is handmade and not from a freezer bag. It's hot, and made by a bunch of high school kids with the supervision of the owner. If you're a fan of fried southern goodness then this is your place. If you're looking for cloth napkins and words like demi glaze, sprig or lightly battered then keep moving. My group had the handmade chicken burger-excellent. Crab cake burger-freezer bag stuff but still good. Seafood Platter-fried to go box of pure southern Cajun goodness.
