My family was looking to burn a little bit of time while visiting Ashland before we attended a community event and so we decided to check out main street to see what shops might interest in to look. Since we have German heritage in our blood, this little shop caught our eye. As you walk you, you are jettisoned into a little piece of German heritage and fun. European candies, specialized kitchen gadgets, Christmas decor, or just the kitschy German/European gift, this little shop packs it all in. It was fun showing my kids the Christmas decorations and explaining to them why we have them in our home. They were finally able to put two and two together of why I put up nutcrackers, smokers, and Christmas carousels as holiday decorations in our house. Now, you might be thinking that I missed out on the most important part - cookies and chocolate (its right in the name). We did sample each cookie and their homemade chocolate covered marzipan. Each selection was super tasty and you could tell they were baked fresh and with love (and real butter). They took my back to some of the cookies my German grandma used to make during Christmas time - pure nostalgia trip. We even picked some cookies up to bring back to my parents so that they could remember by grandmothers cookies as well. Nice to have ways to remind us of people who have moved on. Delicious treats and a great stop in town. Gabriele creates a large variety of German cookies and sweets.

I'm not sure if it was the day or the season, but when we stopped in many of the treats that I'd seen in pictures of the shop were not available. There were many beautiful candies, though, that were all hand made. It was a fun shop with gifts, sweets and a lot of personality. I bought a box of chocolates, and they were all delicious. I also decided to try some chocolate bark made with bacon and onions. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but in hindsight, I think that I will love those foods separately instead of all at once. I'd like to return during the holidays, or when there are more choices available to try some baked goods and candies. read more

Gabriele's is an adorable German gift shop with a small bakery case of homemade delights. We were driving down Main St and pulled over after spotting their sign. Glad we did! Since it's late fall, there was a good stick of traditional German decor, mostly spinners, smokers and other wood carvings. If you're looking for glass or pewter ornaments there weren't a ton, but there are some. Having been up traditional Christkindmarkts both in the US and Germany, I thought their prices were really very fair on the decor items. You can also stock up on traditional German candies, mustards, soup/sauce mixes and spaetzel. The real winner is that pastry case though! Expect 10-15 kinds of homemade German cookies and a dozen kinds of handmade chocolates. Prices are VERY reasonable at $9/dozen where you can mix and match. We got a dozen assorted things and my group agreed it was all DELICIOUS! The lady working was as sweet as the treats they sell. Definitely worth seeking out! read more

Great handmade chocolates, plus a little of this and that from around the world. Gabriele who makes the chocolates is a charming hostess who collects friends and artifacts from exotic places-- tea from Singapore, Rotkraut from Germany and seasonal witch displays from a local artist. For a German shop, with a charming gingerbread house exterior, I would have have loved more German food choices, but perhaps the Ashland clientele doesn't support that interest. Unfortunate, since there is no other vendor offering them in the area. read more

Stopped in to get something sweet when visiting from out of state and was blown away by the amazing assortment of beautiful creations to select from. The assortments of truffles were like works of art. The champagne truffles were out of this world delicious and one of the best things I have ever purchased from ANY sweet shop anywhere. Everything I got was fabulous. Lots of German food items availble too. Loved this shop. Owner was very friendly and great to talk to as well. Highly reccomend this shop. While on vacation, we were directed by a number of local coffee shop dwellers to stop by Gabriele's for a sampling of their fine chocolates. Heeding their advice, we opted to swing on by. (Thankfully, it's convenient location in downtown Ashland was easy to find...) When we entered the establishment we were greeted by the uncomfortable silence of the store. Although some would find it peaceful, I found the lack of music/livelihood distracting. However, their lack of livelihood was perfectly balanced with the dated decor of the establishment. (Obviously, Gabriele's caters to a niche market.) But despite the critiques on the store's atmosphere/decor, their cookies/chocolates are satisfying enough for a short visit. read more

My mom and I entered Gabriele's chocolate shop today to buy a small selection of hand-dipped chocolates as a gift. We ended up spending time perusing the shelves, and ogling at the gorgeous desserts available! Not only were we provided excellent service, but the woman at the counter (Lin!) is a wonderful ambassador for the store, and Ashland in general! The store has a wide selection of local and imported baking mixes, tea, candles, hand towels and other items. In addition to our gift, we purchased some homemade black currant jam and some unintended personal treats... I'll definitely be back, and can't wait to try their sundae bar! read more

By sweet providence I heard this chocolatier mentioned on the Joy Cardin show before my recent trip to Ashland. Hallelujah! I have never had cordials like the ones I had here! Before coming here I didn't even like cordials, but I now recognize those were merely pale imitations. The texture, the flavor, the way one of these heavenly confections tastes...words fail me. We have had the opportunity to sample fine European chocolates in Europe numerous times and were so happy to find quality chocolates near our summer cabin!!! As a local, I have been a long-time fan of Gabriele's shop. My daughter and I love to stop in for an ice cream cone and to see what kind of concoctions she's come up with! We are always pleasantly surprised, and have yet to have a tasty treat we haven't fallen in love with.
