This place was HYPED up to me, and while it was fine, it did not live up to said hype. We were a group of 9, and we arrived on time for our 5pm reservation and were seated promptly. Our server was great, you can tell when you have a pro's pro - and she was one. I ordered an old fashioned, and it was not great. It was a typical "Wisconsin" old fashioned, meaning it tasted cheap, and was not what I expected for the price. I had the sesame tofu, and it was uninspired. It's like they just took the tofu out of the container and slapped some seasoning on it...it was super bland and again, for the price, not special. The leeks were also bland. I ordered meat-less, not flavor-less. The kid and my wife both had the salmon risotto. My wife LOVES risotto and she said this was "fine" and the kiddo said the salmon was "okay." The bill was astronomical - more than two times what we had paid for any other meal for the four days were were in the Bayfield area. It was fun to be with my family and I doubt we'll be in the area again so I won't be back as for me, this was just okay, and way too much money to spend on just okay. read more

Last week I made a reservation for an early dinner last evening (Oct. 23), during the several days my sister and I would be staying in the area. We were some of the first guests to arrive, and were warmly greeted and offered our choice of tables. Chill-vibe music played on large-panel speakers installed flat on the ceiling around the entire room at a volume sufficient to direct the ambient feel of the place. Our server was pleasant, attentive and helpful in answering questions. We ordered the duck wonton appetizer to start, and then for entrees, my sister chose the Osso Bucco (paired with a glass of Pinot Grigio), and, because I love Halibut, I ordered the Pan-fried Halibut Almondine (paired with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc). The wontons were nicely arranged around a small cup of sweet chili sauce, all in a shallow bowl. They were piping hot, blistered-crispy on the outside and creamy-oozy on the inside. Pairing a bite with a dab of sweet chili sauce made for an exciting combination of textures and flavors. An excellent appetizer choice, one I would love to eat again. Next out were dinner salads, along with two warmed rolls and a ball of their herbed butter. The salad greens were fresh, 'springy' (not soggy) and beautiful, and were topped with shavings of carrot, slices of red cabbage and crumbles of feta cheese, along with a sesame-soy vinaigrette. A very tasty and satisfying salad. Then our entrees arrived, fresh and hot. Both entrees were beautiful in their presentation. My first bite of Halibut, though, was disappointing. It was tough, dry - overcooked - not delicate, moist and flaky as it should have been. Our server stopped by briefly at that same time to ask how our first bites were and did not seem to pick-up on our comments about the overcooked Halibut. The mashed potato bed the fish rested upon was creamy and flavorful, and really nice with the lemon browned butter pooling alongside. Adding more color and flavor on my plate were thin wedges of what may have been oven- roasted heirloom cherry tomatoes, some deep-bright green broccolini, and some bright green sprouts (perhaps radish?) that were on top of the piece of fish. The sauvignon blanc was the perfect wine pairing for my taste - providing a fragrant aroma, pleasant fruitiness and good body - although the pour seemed a bit scant (may have been a 3 oz. pour?). About half-way through my entree, I decided to stop eating because I was starting to feel full and I wanted to try a dessert. My sister's first bite of the steaming-hot Osso Bucco (and my trial bite) was one of great pleasure. Sooo tender, moist and flavorful! The truffle risotto paired nicely with the shank of pork. The sautéed vegetables seemed a bit overcooked, except for the broccolini. She said she enjoyed the Pinot Grigio wine pairing with her entree. She wanted dessert too, so stopped eating her entree about half-way through. For a dessert to share, we ordered the dark chocolate mousse. In was presented in a small brandy-snifter style glass, and was topped with a berry compote and whipped cream. It was creamy, silky and delicious, with rich chocolate flavor paired with ripe berry and sweet cream. It was the perfect size for us each to enjoy several bites. And when we received our check we saw it was just $5 (the dessert prices are not displayed in their drinks menu). We appreciated the "right-size" dessert at the "right price". When our server returned our boxed-up leftovers to us, I told her that my piece of Halibut was rather tough and dry, obviously overcooked, and that I saw one of the women at a table adjacent to ours had ordered the Halibut and had cut a piece of her fish and handed it across the table to her friend and I could see from its appearance several feet away that her piece of Halibut, too, was overcooked. The server seemed aware of this fact and alluded to "some new staff in the kitchen", but offered no apology or compensation, which would have been appreciated. In such a renowned restaurant, the "new staff" really ought to know how to properly cook fish beyond the confines of a deep fat fryer. read more

Last minute stop on a busy Friday July 5. Place was very full but found seat at bar. All staff was amazing and super friendly! Shout out to the bartender, didn't get his name but gray hair and sideburns, he is a rockstar multitasker!! He had no bar back so he did it all solo. Bar drinks, bar diners, restaurant drinks and restocking his bar with glasses and booze. Big drink menu too so he was making complicated time consuming drinks not pouring a beer or basic Jack and coke. Pleasant welcoming and engaged with everyone all the time. He deserves a raise!! It was Friday so not being a local I had to try the fish fry and holy cow the fish was amazing!! Tender flaky and lightly beer battered with a slight crunch. I was worried it would have 1inch thick hard as rock batter but no it was light tender and delicious. Even had a couple extra pieces because I wasn't feeling full of fried batter. Also very reasonably priced, well cocktails $5 and AYCE fish fry $20 I'm from Chicago and this would be at least 2-3x. HIGHLY recommend because it's a Good Thyme! read more

Made reservations for a Saturday evening dinner and I'm so glad we did! Good Thyme came as a recommendation and I'd definitely recommend to anyone reading this. Service was excellent and attentive. We ordered for starters the Wisconsin cheese curds, for our entrees, we had the 14 ounce handcut Ribeye (very tasty and done to perfection-medium rare) and the Almond crusted Whitefish (fish is light, airy and delicious, love the subtleness of the almond crust). The food was phenomenal. The flavors were insane. I ordered the filet mignon, duck wontons, and muscles. These were all delicious! My issue was that my boyfriend and I waited more than an hour for our main course which was ridiculous. We didn't leave the restaurant until 8:30 and we arrived around 6:30 or so. We tried to make a reservation, but on the phone they said they were no longer accepting any for Friday or Saturday. ALSO, my boyfriend and I both witnessed someone in the kitchen using their bare hands to prepare salads that we both ate!!! The kitchen door was swinging open and we could see right inside. One of the best dining experiences we've had in years. Food was incredible. Blackened Lake Trout and Pistachio Crusted Whitefish. The trout had mixed veg and black rice, with background essence of hatch chili. Wow factor. Whitefish on mashed potato also prepared perfectly...we couldn't decide which was better. Brown butter cake was out of this world. Chef has mad skills...everything spot on. Bartender makes a great martini with hand stuffed olives, and a great Cosmo. Service perfect. Happy and quick and not overbearing. ALL staff sincerely happy we were there. Great ambiance, feels you are at friends home for dinner. We went back for fish fry next day. Again...excellent. We enjoyed a spectacular evening at Good Thyme for my partner's birthday. Thank You to the staff for getting us in on short notice as even on this Wednesday night it was a packed house. The cuisine and service were both fantastic, even on a very busy night our server didn't miss a beat. Of particular note the Duck Wontons and Stuffed Bistro Tender (steak) were truly amazing. Well crafted house cocktail menu and wine list also. We also particularly enjoyed the ambiance of the old house in which the restaurant lies- just elegant enough w/o being pretentious, and a lively but not loud bar. We arrived just before dusk- our only, and very minor, critique was the atmosphere could be enhanced by dimming the overhead lighting slightly upon sunset. Bayfield Wisconsin isn't one of my usual haunts, but well worth a visit. I now see why the late JFK, Jr used to retreat to the Bayfield area to escape. It is a beautiful area with lots to see and do, and less anyone feel that one has to sacrifice fine dining to experience the Wisconsin northwoods...I suggest...no I insist that you find your way to Good Thyme for a...(sorry)...good time! You will pass Good Thyme just outside of Washburn as you drive the final few miles to Bayfield. You will see an attractive older home with a large wraparound porch and ample parking sitting by itself in the right. It is only open 5-9 pm and I would recommend a reservation, if you are dining after 6, as it seemed to get quite busy quickly after our 6 pm seating. We were seated by the kitchen, but I did not even mind, and I could see that the staff was hustling and attentive to everyone. One of the staff (perhaps the owner or manager?) seemed to know half of the patrons and greeted them like old friends. I almost felt like I was in an upscale episode of Cheers. Our waitress, Jan, as well as the other staff, were very attentive and our water glasses never got even half empty before being refilled. Jan was extremely pleasant, did not appear rushed with us, and made excellent recommendations. Neither the wine list, drink menu, nor food menu were enormous, but definitely adequate. Everything we had was excellent and exceeded expectations. A few highlights: We started with the Brie and baguette. This sounds pretty basic but was amazing! The Brie was covered with a chutney which included rhubarb and apples and a Marsala wine sauce. Paired with the warm baguette I was quite content. Next came the house salad...on most meals just a forgettably modest segway to the main course. The Good Thyme salad has an Asian influenced sesame oil vinaigrette with a cow's milk feta that was surprisingly amazing! At this point we were quite content, with the main course remaining. I had the Char crusted pub filet, stuffed with cheese and cooked perfectly. My wife had the freshly caught Lake Superior whitefish, which was a generous serving of light, flaky delicious whitefish. Both of our meals were generously portioned, nicely presented, reasonably priced, and DELICIOUS! Overall, we had an excellent dining experience and I recommend Good Thyme highly! read more

The staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant was nice. Two of us had drinks--a cosmo and an old fashioned, which were excellent. For dinner, I had the almond crusted halibut with mashed potatoes and broccoli. It was delicious and well presented. My meal was worth five stars! My daughter had salmon, which tasted fishy, so she did not finish the salmon. I shared my halibut with her and she also thought it was very good. Both my husband and our son-in-law ordered the double cheeseburgers. The hamburgers looked great in the photos on Yelp but neither of them liked their burgers at all. They said the burgers tasted fishy. At first we thought they were smelling the salmon but we could definitely smell a fish smell from the bun. It really ruined the taste even after taking the buns off the hamburgers. We mentioned it to the waitress so she went back to ask in the kitchen. They said they grill the salmon and buns in the same area of the grill. That seems risky when people can have allergies to fish. It's also two tastes that don't belong together. Hopefully, they make sure to not cross-contaminate foods so the foods can keep the flavors they should have and to also avoid a chance of someone having a reaction to foods they shouldn't have. read more

What a find! We were vacationing up there and stumbled in after 18 holes at apostle highlands golf. The house salad with salmon was absolutely amazing. The salmon was done perfectly and for the 10.00 additional charge was a steal as it was a big filet. My husband and son each had the burger which they both enjoyed. Our waitress was super and attentive and I believe the owner even checked on us. We were a bit underdressed.. I think.. but they seated us immediately without a reservation.
