I was being escorted around the area and they chose the lunch location. They had a good variety of items but a lot of things I don't eat. I ordered the soup. . . small bacon corn chowder and a BLT on gluten free bread. Thankfully, I don't think the soup was made with cream or dairy. The broth was too thin (I could be wrong). It was okay. The BLT was tasty. I enjoyed the gluten free bread (tasted like mine). We stopped in for breakfast one morning while we were staying in town. My wife had the name and cheese omelet. I had eggs and bacon only. This is a small hometown style coffee shop, with lots of locals. A customer orders at the counter then finds a table. My wife's food came out in a reasonable amount of time. There was some miscommunication somewhere with my food, and it took about 45 minutes to get my food order complete and right. The manager did come over and made things right. Overall, we enjoyed our breakfast, and would order here again. read more

This had always been a go to place if I was in town. I'm not going there anymore. The food is not worth the wait, the attitude, the price. It takes forever to get your food. And the whole place just has this "I'm so hip and cool " vibe that I'm sick of. Most of the stuff comes from the bakery across the street. I recommend just going there. read more

Interesting place. Was here several years ago, but it was too busy for me to wait to sample their offerings. Came in on a Sat morning , and had the Biscuits & mushroom gravy special with a bourbon brown sugar latte. Biscuits were slightly hard, but I think they are cooked that way on purpose. Reason being, that when the hot gravy is poured over, it softens up but wont disintegrate. Clearly homemade biscuits, and the mushroom gravy , with bits of green onion was out of this world delish! Had the BBS latte in a giant oversize cup which made me feel like their was a "latte" more than I actually had in my cup! That was also fantastic. My friend had a cinnamon roll, with a mocha latte with Maple syrup added. The girls behind the counter played the Barista role perfectly. Suggesting the maple syrup which my pal loved! Designs in the drinks were perfect. Service was top shelf. I had to leave Ashland the next day because Im not local to the area, but of course I checked in and got coffee to go for my long ride home. Went here for breakfast, a morning coffee, and to get some work done and ended up coming back for lunch. We ordered a regular coffee and a maple latte which we drank with some of the baked goods that we got from Ashland Baking across the street. They also sell the Ashland Baking goods at the bakery and were bringing them across the street as we were coming in. The maple latte had a nice maple flavor without being overpowering. It was very pleasant to drink. When we came back for lunch we got the spicy Asian beef & kimchi bowl. We were surprised that the beef was ground beef, but everything was super tasty and paired well together. The rice particularly was a pleasant surprise. Overall, nice staff, tasty food, and a decent amount of space. They also have a bunch of books to look at and some for sale. It appears to be kid-friendly as well, as there is a separate room with some kids toys, chairs, and coloring options. Very good coffee shop. read more

The pesto melt was delicious even if it was covered in red peppers. Lol. On the other hand, the hummus sandwich, which I believe was called the yellow bird, was uninspired. I would not order it again. I substituted the pickled onions for fresh sliced red onions so I doubt that made the difference in my experience. The cucumbers were sliced way too thick, and the whole thing was difficult to eat (on sourdough). The coffee was great. The fresh cookies were amazing as were the homemade fries. The ambience is lovely, with plenty of seating options from booths and tables indoors to patio tables outside. There is also a little children's indoor play area, which I could imagine would come in handy for parents. Overall, I definitely recommend. read more

What a great place! If I ever move to Ashland, it would be close to this block - I'd frequent the co-op grocery store, the bakery, and The Black Cat. It's a funky little coffeehouse with a great selection of coffee and tea drinks, as well as breakfast & lunch options. They offer vegetarian food too, yay! Loved how cozy and welcoming the cafe & employees were. The food was fresh & delicious. In the back room there are bookcases with books for sale. When we were there, they were hosting an employee art exhibit, which was really fun. The only downside was the wait - it's a super-busy place. Which, I guess, is good! I got the Garden Omelette and it was a 10/10. I ordered a side of sourdough toast with it, and I was amazed by how nicely the pesto worked in the omelette. The service was excellent, and our food was served hot and quickly. This coffee shop was the perfect spot to get breakfast, and prepare for the rest of our drive. I definitely recommend visiting! We were visiting the Ashland area last week & on our 4th day of vacation we needed a Good Vegan meal! We stopped in at the Black Cat Coffeehouse & had an AMAZING lunch. Such a super cute cafe in a surprising place! I was not expecting Ashland WI to have such a cool cafe. I got an oat milk lavender latte and the sweet potato black bean burger. We stopped here in the middle of a road trip and it was the perfect pick-me-up! I was so happy to find a spot that has vegan options :) We got the vegan burrito and it was amazing, so flavorful and filling. The breakfast potatoes were also vegan and great. They had a few tables outside on the sidewalk so we were able to enjoy our food, with my dog and only a few blocks from the water. The majority of their packaging was compostable which is wonderful. The cashiers were friendly and the prices were reasonable for the quality/quantity. I look forward to stopping here again if I'm in the area! read more

Poor service. I have stopped in a few times this summer and autumn. Always, below par service (this is a service industry business). They were closing early the day I came in. I was there ten minutes before they closed. I was clearly being ignored while others were waiting for their orders. I had to ask if they would take my order. The two girls looked at each other and smiled, as if to reply, "we really don't want to", but didn't say a word. Then one of the girls started to dump out the tip jar and count it in front of me. I had to ask again, if I would be getting any service. The girls both looked away from me. Then I stated that I had seen the sign on the door. Then the one counting the tips said "yeah, we're closed". I feel for the business owners that have to hire these college students that are pathetic workers, I'm right there with ya. But training, is the best tool to combat their lack luster, inherent skills. I will have to ignore this place when I'm in town, and that's every week for the next year and maybe beyond. I know the owner, she is a nice lady. Her staff does not reflect it. read more

So I heard a lot of good things about this place. I decided to check it out for myself. It was a busy day but I ordered a iced latte I had to wait about 20minutes. But that's understandable if there's a long line like there was. My main issue was with the coffee. I ordered a large ice latte with cream. They had some ice and then they put A small amount of coffee like the amount for the small size with a little cream and then I watch them fill up about a third of a cup with tapwater from the sink. So basically they gave me water down coffee with ice. And it tasted disgusting just like water down coffee. And then I watch them do this with a lot of other people's orders just adding water to the coffee. Disgusting I will not drink coffee here again. read more

Girlfriend and I are visiting from out of town and one of the places we put on our checklist was the black at coffeehouse. Mainly because my girlfriend is obsessed with cats and she liked the pictures that were here on yelp. We ordered soy iced Mayan mocha which was spicy and delicious. For food we ordered the root down veggie hash and the vegan burrito. Both were extremely thought out dishes with lots of flavor and none of the guilt. We also took a pastry to go that they were having freshly delivered from the Ashland Baking company that is directly across the street. The only drawback to our visit was that with COVID, there was limited seating to the outdoors, which was a cute backyard garden type setup. The food was great, the service was great and the energy was great. We will be visiting again before we head home! Great Job! read more

Needing a place to work (working vacation) with good WiFi, I perused the Yelp reviews. My daughter was at a Northland College summer camp so I was able to hang around the lake for the week...oh darn. Their coffee is local, with about 3 types going at any one time. I usually just get mocha and coffee, so it was nice that the barista put the mocha in and pointed me to the coffee. I also fancied a lemon poppyseed muffin (and blueberry my next visits) and was off to the coffee. Local Duluth Coffee and other local organic coffee was had in all three carafes. Changing daily (or at least the three time I went), the coffee was extremely good and brewed fresh. This seems to be THE meeting place in Ashland, and I can see why. The coffee was very, very good each time, brewed to high standards. Others had full breakfasts and lunches, but I did not. I loved their signage, which said "this is not fast food, we have a limited kitchen space, be patient." Firm but appreciated, the wait for food by the others was very acceptable. Oh, and the muffin(s)? They were very, VERY good crafted locally each day. Well worth it, they were. As we (my daughter and I) left town, we hit another local place and I mentioned where I had spent time. Her response? "Oh, that place? The Northland College people call that the Bermuda Triangle of shops." Black Cat Coffee, along with Chequamegon Food Co-op and Krav'ns Frozen Yogurt place should not be missed. This is a gem in the great north woods of Wisconsin. Just off Main St. in Ashland, WI, Yelp found me this place and it was exactly what I was looking for while away from home. Actually, I was surprised to find a niche place like this up here, but then again, it fits well with the college that resided in the city. I purchased a Mocha Latte and it was pretty good. The coffeehouse has two larger, but longer rooms and a nice sized coffee bar with many drink and food choices. The wifi is also free (I'm on it right now typing this review). Hailing from Milwaukee, where we have a plethora of coffee houses, its great to find a locally owned niche coffee house in a small town like Ashland.
