My alma mater. Woot Woot! (sidenote: I love how literally EVERYTHING is on Yelp) I would like to think of us as the underdogs of the local area. Established in 1994, GHS is a relatively young and small school, but I think it's a pretty decent school with good academic potential (at least as of 2006). ACADEMICS: If you want an education, you can definitely get a quality one at GHS. Back in 2002-2006, I could tell that about half the students didn't really care about getting an education and were just going through the motions, but for those willing to seek out the Honors/AP track, there is plenty of opportunity to be challenged and to excel. - Pros: 1) Excellent teachers in the Honors/AP track. The AP teachers do a wonderful job prepping you for the tests. 2) All senior English teachers make the UC Personal Statements a mandatory assignment, so you at least get that much help in the college application process. - Cons: 1) There wasn't a very large selection of AP classes to take, so hopefully they have expanded/will expand their AP offerings. 2) The rigor of the AP classes did not adequately prepare me for the workload in college, but then again, few schools do. EXTRACURRICULARS: There is a lot to get involved with. Speech & Debate, Orchestra, Band, FBLA, a lot of volunteering clubs, Journalism, Yearbook, etc. Speech is probably the most famous program. FBLA was among the top in the Gold Coast section when I was there. Competing was always fun. Also did Journalism and Yearbook. VERDICT: I would say this is a A Do-It-Yourself school. There's no hand-holding and babying, but if you know what you want to achieve, what college you want to end up at, there are plenty of resources to help you get there. You will succeed if you put your mind to it. (Proof: Plenty of my friends were admitted to top schools. Going to UCLA is oftentimes like going to a mini-GHS reunion. Went here Class of 2018. Overall, the school itself in terms of facilities aren't too bad in my opinion. I happened to be someone into the arts at the time (still am). I have been in many art classes at the school such as, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, also AP Art. I also have participated in Drama Club and happened to be the club president in my senior year. I am someone who was into music as well. However, in terms of choir classes...I've noticed during my time at the school, many students in the choir are pretty pretentious I felt. Which in turn, caused me not to join. With how the school is structure-wise, I'm not really mad at it. It's more so the actual students I've come across and how the faculty deal with issues particularly regarding mental health. I wasn't really a "popular" kid, but wasn't that much of an outcast either. I was somewhere in between. When it came to the people I was hanging out with on a daily basis, we were doing things that normally people do in high school. Chill, hang out, and joke around. If I'm being honest, in high school, I was someone who had mental issues especially with suicidal ideations. Due to issues I had outside of high school at the time. Thankfully I'm not there mentally anymore. However, I didn't really have much support outside of my friends at the time. It felt hard to talk to somebody, but one day I brought it up to my counselor... Well after I did, it made things a lot worse. Essentially it separated me from my family, and I felt alienated from the students when I told them the issues I had at the time. A particular friend I had who I considered to be my best friend, I confided in her and I was basically shamed for it. The next day, she never spoke to me again after that. I had another friend, who actually was trying to get to the bottom root of the issue and I dismissed her which I still feel bad for. There was another person who I thought was a friend, but actually secretly did not like me. She was someone known to start drama. After these events happened, I was alienated from my main circle and others. Felt embarrassed during graduation day and overall I have mainly known people who are really deep down fake. Well, it's expected from a place like California. I was happy to leave considering I didn't have to see or talk to most of the people I knew there ever again. However, it feels bittersweet because while I don't want anything to do with this school or the memories associated...it feels tough to know that looking back I didn't have a good experience. Doesn't mean the school itself is horrible, it's the social life that came with it and how I was treated that did not feel good. read more

Mrs. Nguyen almost let me piss myself in her class and had the assistant principal come and scold me for "holding her back from her baby" after I ran out to pee before I couldn't hold it in anymore. I was also severely depressed and 5150'd multiple times via the school, but they never put me on an IEP and I eventually dropped out during the covid pandemic. I still remember 3 years ago that I moved to San Gabriel fora better life with my parents. I was exited to start my high school sophomore year in a new school and my father took me here to enrolled in. But it was so disappointing, we waited 1 hour to get a word with the receptionist who wouldn't talk to us or pay attention and the only thing that she did was to be racist and indifferent to my father, even the security guard was so raciest just because my father is Hispanic. We left our email to get an answer to see if I could be enrolled in this school, and we waited 1 week and they never emailed us. The thing was that my father was mad and he took me to another school to enrollen me in. And I'm so happy about it because in the school that I'm right now is no racist like this one and it's no indifferent to people's needs as Gabrielito is. Don't send your kids here. My son went here, he was constantly being bullied by students and the principal did nothing about it (Mr. Lopez). The teachers are horrible and do not provide help when needed. Ms. Tien, the freshman english teacher has a bad attitude and is a bitch. She's a liar who calls parents for no reason. One of the security guards smokes nicotine with the students. This school is supposed to to be in a good location, but they are wasting our property tax dollars by not giving the students a cafeteria, no lockers for students (we have to carry 6-7 textbooks by hand), not enough teriyaki rice bowls and frozen food from the cafeteria. The homeowners in this area pay a lot of property taxes for this low quality of school. Students have to sit outside even in windy temperatures where they get locked out of classrooms by teachers who sit in their room temperature ac in their classrooms!!! Most teachers are also gossipy who gossip about their students to other staff and other students! They also expose where people are going to college before they graduate and letting the whole school know about it without the students consent! The current principal is also wasting money by painting herself a mural in the school when that money could have went to building lockers and a cafeteria for students! Nightmares on Day One!!!!!! First day at Gabrielino, registration process is broken, long lines in parking lot, unimpressed so far. We waited in line for over an hour. The line at the DMV was faster. After the check in line, we were directed to the gym line, another long line, choke points after choke points. We are in 2018, much of this can be done online, we have to take time off from work to stand in your lines. The Jefferson Middle School process was so much more efficient, in and out in less than 20 mins. This ordeal took 2 hours. Instead of lines, try stations, don't combine all the station into one line, all it takes is one person to delay everyone in the line. Plus, not everyone needs to sign up for everything. Overall, first impression, 5 out of 10.... Not Good!!!! read more

This time the host Gabrielino Eagle lost to the California City Ravens (from Kern County) by a score of 20-18. Entry to the game was $7.00, a program cost $4.00 and parking was free. My sister goes to this school and I feel like this is the best high school she's been in. But I don't like this music teacher she's afraid of. She's says she always picks in the violas and screams at them in class. She wants to report her but is to scared. I would totally go to this school but not to music unless I'm experienced. My sister is experienced she has been taking classes since the 6th grade and was in honors class but still gets yelled at. I think they should put a nicer music person. Edited review, July 2017: I am sorry that I got some things wrong, such as demographic and that other thing. This is a very young and small school. It is now 21 years old. The student demographic is 70% Asian, 20% Hispanic, and 10% anything else. Not surprising since it's San Gabriel Valley. It's a school for high achievers. The education I received was challenging. I love Ms. Leyda, the biology teacher and anatomy teacher. She is very kind. There are only two languages available for study: Mandarin and Spanish. If students already know how to speak Mandarin or Spanish, they can still take that class. The Mandarin teacher works very hard to make TPRSes and often stays late. They let ELD students who only speak Chinese take AP Mandarin, taking away spots for students who aren't a native Chinese speaker. The Honors and AP classes are very good. There are no cliques here, just friend groups. There is rarely any drama and fights. This school seems to fire perfectly good history teachers and hire new ones. We have a few new English teachers this year. The drama department works very diligently to put on fun plays once every couple months. The school is set up to help you with their after-school tutoring services and Peer Helping. This school offers many clubs and sports. Oh yeah, shoutout to the janitors who have to clean one building each. I personally did not enjoy my high school experience very much. I hope that the popular teens have a hard time making friends at college. Most of them are popular because they've been at this small town their whole life. I'm sorry if I sound bitter but I've been a loner for so long. Critiques: The school has allowed about five kids ditch 5th period for some reason. I won't list names but one's initials are ZJ. I see them sitting at a table talking and on their phones. I see them there frequently. There are random hairballs floating around the floors of the school. The janitors seem not to mind. Imagine dustballs but instead of dust and hay, large amounts of dark hair. For a long period of time in 2014-2015, there were random false fire alarms that no one cared anymore and just continued with class. I think it was because the system was so old and not because some punk lifesaver pulled it.Most importantly, sometime in November around inauguration when Trump was elected, there was supposed to be a walkout on Friday to show our unhappiness since we're in southern California. The school had the gates locked so no one could do the walkout. Some other high schools let their students do a walkout. Somebody snitched to the school authorities. I do not care if they support Trump or not, but they should allow students to show their dissent. read more

Our school may be small, but when I'm tired from cheer, speech, or too hot on a sunny day, or too cold from rain or wind, I'd rather walk a short distance than a long distance. I love GHS. If you're looking for a school for your kid, don't go here. They will experience a large amount of bullying, harassment, biased teachers & coaches, and useless counselors. Graduated here 2 years ago and I'll never understand why it's one of California's "best" schools. It's super small and the variety of classes is extremely low. If you report harassment, they will do nothing. Some of the teachers are very caring whereas others are just completely bitter about their life they take it out on the students. Security or "yard ladies" during lunch are ridiculously bias and will treat you horribly. They have "gab weeks" "gab attitude" and "gab talks" to try to "connect" or "inspire" students but it's honestly a waste of time considering majority of the staff and students have participated in one way or another to treat a student unfairly. Very poor high school. Many having moved schools or hated high school due to this poor emotional and physical treatment. read more

You can get memories at any high school. In no way am I biased, but the campus is pretty much the same size or even smaller than the middle schools in SG. I think SMHS and AHS definitely did better than us, but actually, so did places like even SMHS, RHS, and SGHS. That's sad. My cousins had went over to SGHS and MKHS (both of which are considered outdated and overpopulated as well), but they actually seemed to enjoy it more than I enjoyed Gab. Pretty much the only things I enjoyed were the art teachers Ms. Hopper and Mr. Hwang (who appears to be no longer at Gab after 2006-2010) and all of the English and PE teachers, namely Mr. Swanson and Mr. Feng (who also seems to be retired?). And actually, no one seems to of checked but the school is quite competitive. The other HSes in SGV offer more AP classes, score better on SATS/ACT, and have better extracurricular overall. Why on Earth would they have so much competition altogether, and on top of that, they still let sooo many disadvantaged and mentally handicapped kids run around? I graduated from this school in 2015 and honestly I hated going here. I wish I could have went to another high school if I could. There are no lockers, no hallways, and no caferteria. We had to eat in the classrooms or if the classroom is locked we had to eat outside which is dirty, dusty, and sometimes cold. While waiting in line for lunch we had to wait till lunch was almost over to get the food which all they had was frozen cold pizza, spicy chicken sandwich or burrito. There was teriyaki rice bowl too but they run out quickly if you wait too long. This was for the hot lunch line. The cold lunch line consist of frozen salad , yes frozen has the salad had literal ice in it and it's still cold. Grilled cheese that taste like a brick and hamburger which was the only decent one. They don't let us go out of the campus to buy food which rosemead hs allows and probably other hs allows it as well. I mean if they had decent food we wouldn't need to go out of campus. Bringing our own food is a pain too because we have to carry it all day with our other heavy books that we have no where to put except our backpacks or we have to carry it. We can put it in the classrooms too but someone might steal it or the teacher won't be there when we need to pick it up because we have no lockers to put it in. The teachers are ok but they don't really seem to care when the students get bullied. I didn't like the people in my year but the students in other year seem fine. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this school if you have other schools to choose from. read more
