I was a bad student, skipped class, had poor grades, but once I was thrown into summer school, that…read moreall changed. I don't want to say it was one particular teacher who changed my view, because none of them really did, but they never really put me down which I liked... Many of them challenged me, in a sense even saw potential in me. I had teachers who cared and let me pass when I shouldn't have and teachers who didn't care and let me pass when I shouldn't have. But all in all, the teachers here were genuine, especially the younger teachers.. friendly, easy to talk too, and pretty down to earth except one or two............ ( I won't name names ) My only issue was that I was not prepped with the material I needed to know for college. I had a difficult time adjusting to community college, the basic material I should have known from high school I didn't know, especially mathematics. I had to learn everything again, maybe implementation of a better system to keep track of students comprehensive skills related to the subject matter might be nice. The ONE thing I did learn was how to work with different types of people and by that I mean teachers. Some wanted participation, others paperwork, some wanted to be liked, some wanted to be left alone, and I think I became pretty good at molding myself around (teachers) ideals and that is a very good life skill to have. The school was a concrete jungle full of cliques, drug issues, even had a few pregnant students. It has it's good things too, lots of fun crap to do, all clubs food sales, dance teams etc. I don't know how to thank them for letting me slide so I could reach further in my education. I did a lot of begging towards the end of my high school career trying to get my teachers to pass me because I was always on the cusp of failing, but miraculously I graduated. Now I'm working on my graduate degree! Thanks RHS for keeping it real.

Don't get be wrong, I'm not trying to be bias just because I went to school here, but because I been to a lot of the other middle schools, none of them have as safe of a campus as well as the amount of great staff that actually cares about students well being. I have been visiting many schools the past ten years, from volunteering to just pure visiting, and if you're thinking between Garvey Intermediate, Temple, Ynez, and all the other schools, please put Garvey as your consideration! Because trust me, your kid won't miss a thing. Best of all, there are many electives kids can choose from. From arts to choir, from band to yearbook and journalism. Why go private at New Ave school when you can save a bunch of money trying out a public middle school? From a lot of my friends that went to private schools they claim that private didn't teach them anything, but was just more enforced on the dress codes and rules. Not saying it's bad to go to private or anything but think of all the money you save!

My alma mater. Woot Woot! (sidenote: I love how literally EVERYTHING is on Yelp)…read more I would like to think of us as the underdogs of the local area. Established in 1994, GHS is a relatively young and small school, but I think it's a pretty decent school with good academic potential (at least as of 2006). ACADEMICS: If you want an education, you can definitely get a quality one at GHS. Back in 2002-2006, I could tell that about half the students didn't really care about getting an education and were just going through the motions, but for those willing to seek out the Honors/AP track, there is plenty of opportunity to be challenged and to excel. - Pros: 1) Excellent teachers in the Honors/AP track. The AP teachers do a wonderful job prepping you for the tests. 2) All senior English teachers make the UC Personal Statements a mandatory assignment, so you at least get that much help in the college application process. - Cons: 1) There wasn't a very large selection of AP classes to take, so hopefully they have expanded/will expand their AP offerings. 2) The rigor of the AP classes did not adequately prepare me for the workload in college, but then again, few schools do. EXTRACURRICULARS: There is a lot to get involved with. Speech & Debate, Orchestra, Band, FBLA, a lot of volunteering clubs, Journalism, Yearbook, etc. Speech is probably the most famous program. FBLA was among the top in the Gold Coast section when I was there. Competing was always fun. Also did Journalism and Yearbook. VERDICT: I would say this is a A Do-It-Yourself school. There's no hand-holding and babying, but if you know what you want to achieve, what college you want to end up at, there are plenty of resources to help you get there. You will succeed if you put your mind to it. (Proof: Plenty of my friends were admitted to top schools. Going to UCLA is oftentimes like going to a mini-GHS reunion. But I was a rebel and chose USC over Cal and UCLA =P) - GHS C/O '06.

I had never came here for education, so I don't know anything about that…read more But I do come here almost weekly during the weekend to ball kids up. There is this manhole on the fence that allows people to go into the school, so that's pretty cool. The lights near the benches never close, so we could just you know order some pizza or some shit and eat over there when its too dark or your friends are too fat to walk. They have cool automatic lights on the grass that turn on when you don't need em and when you actually do need em they turn off, so that's pretty cool. Uhh its a pretty big place so if you wanna play hide 'n go seek then you could get lost in this joint. But that's why its fun, cause when you can't find someone you just quit and sit at the benches so they could hide for dayz. There's also market carts that you can take inside the school and push your friends with. This place is so chill that one day we all assembled here to play basketball and ended up playing charades and no basketball at all, so the ball boy had to walk back home and never came back again. Overall, you could do anything you want here during the weekends so thats pretty cool. Just don't come around the bench area cause thats like our home turf so, if you don't wanna get blasted, you know what to do.
