Fish and Chips and a local beer were on tap for our meal, and it was all very good. We ordered and paid for our meal at the bar, and enjoyed our time at a high table by the window. We were here early afternoon, so things were relatively quiet, vs. an more boisterous and crowded evening pub atmosphere. There's 3 rooms (including the one with the bar) downstairs and an upstairs, with the local Hobart Brewing Company running this historical establishment. It looks like they have some work ahead of them in terms of upkeep of this elderly building, but the food, clientele, and atmosphere all fit together well.

We didn't have a reservation and the wait was going to be about 45 minutes or more, so luckily we were able to find a couple of open spots at a table in the bar area, where you order at the bar and the food is delivered to your table. It worked great! - There are a lot of great beers on tap, including several from Hobart Brewing Company. - Based on prior reviews, my wife and I ordered the Fish and Chips and the Seafood Chowder to split both dishes between us. The Fish and Chips were excellent, not overly breaded and the fish was perfectly cooked, very juicy. And, it came with a little salad. The Seafood Chowder was really good, including the bread that came with it. - The vibe inside is really fun, just a bit loud as you would expect a pub to be. Bottom line: We're glad we spent our first night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern.

I'd seen so many photos of the hip fitout that I had my assumptions about the menu, and those assumptions were way off. My friend and I started with an entree and a half each, because we both needed to try the chowder but also another thing each. The chowder was out of this world delicious, and I'm pretty sure it had some sage in it (or just the right combination of other herbs and spices that tricked me into thinking it was sage), but I've been back since just for the chowder and it didn't have quite that same flavour to it. I was a little disappointed, but the chowder is still super, super delicious and comes with an enormous prawn hanging out in it (entertaining but awkward to eat, nobody look at me please). I won mains hands down with my steak, which I forced my friend to try as well (ok I didn't have to force her very hard). I chose the Cox coffee rub for it because I was intrigued. I chose medium rare because that's how steak should be cooked. And I chose some duck fat potatoes and honey brown mushrooms for sides because I couldn't not. Seriously, so good. But so much food. Because this is a gastropub, not a fine dining restaurant. If someone had explained this to me before I went, maybe I wouldn't have had 1.5 entrees before my enormous main, leaving less than zero room for my dessert (yes, even my dessert stomach abandoned me) and giving me actual pains because I was so full (and yet still got most of my sides to take away and devour the following day with some scrambled eggs because I'm a genius). Most go to socialize and drink in the bar area but on the parking side front there are a dozen or so tables for dining. They were having a raffle when I was there and if they called your number you chose something off a table. I saw the second winner choose a six pack of beer. The food is pretty good, but the fun part is watching the locals. It feels like a trip back in time. The menu here is like many places in Tasmania- fish,seafood, beef , with some chicken like Chicken Parmi as they call it here. Like everywhere else, loads of fries. Nubeena is a tourist area in the far south. There are a few towns a wee bit farther south but basically south of here is open sea all the way to Antarctica. The two of us were the only tourists in the place. Everyone seemed to know each other. As is the case most everywhere here you order at the desk and pay, and when ready its brought to your table. The lady at our hotel suggested this place when we asked about evening dining as most places in Tasmania close EARLY. In small towns the majority of places to eat serve breakfast and lunch only. 16:00 or 16:30 hours seems to be a common closing time around the island.

However, if you are like me it is possible to access the restaurant whilst still avoiding pretty much the entire casino by using the lower entrance or wandering around the water-side boardwalk.

($9) It was amazing but the very small serve of wallaby was not great value for $17. When you say 'porterhouse', you usually think of a nice thick steaky chunk of meat not a half palm slice of meat. The flavours were just right and the aoili-style condiment with the meat went down very nicely with the smashed potatoes which were (I suspect) double fried to perfection. Golden, crunchy exterior with a lovely soft buttery inside. The only reason it didn't deserve a five star review in my opinion was the meat came alone. If it was a super-posh place that serves each dish alone, well, fine, be all wanky and all that but this was just an upper-class pub. The horseradish buttermilk accompanied the wallaby meat very well. Rather than being very pungent, the sauce only had the horseradish taste. When I was given this recommendation, I was under the impression there was one chocolate dessert. Unfortunately, there appears to be two, the Frogmore Cigar and the Snickers. My waitress considered the latter the restaurant's chocolate dessert because of the hot chocolate sauce poured over the peanut butter parfait. If this wasn't the chocolate dessert which I had been recommended, it is a very close second.

It's filled with fake ocean props and displays that seem totally at odds with the new modern stylings. Prices have gone up, serving size has gone down and what was a quaint gem hidden on the way to Port Arthur has now Been gentrified in the most disappointing way possible.
