    Raspberry scone

We were so glad to book a Galway walking food tour for our one full day in Galway. We arrived late yesterday and leave tomorrow, so we decided to do this to get acquainted with the city, learn some new things about Ireland, and eat well! We met Sheena and 13 others in front of Griffin's Bakery this morning. We got to sample a 120+ year old carrot cake recipe first, then a fresh raspberry scone. They were delicious! Then we went to a wonderful shop called McCambridges, where we tasted three different Irish liquors: Green Spot Whiskey, Micil Poitin (moonshine), and Longueville House Apple Brandy. We sampled local cheese Killeen goat cheese with fenugreek seeds and Mossfield, plus air-dried lamb (and pork for everyone else). At Tigh Neachtain pub, we tried Kojac beer and Galway Hooker Irish Pale Ale, along with Cafe Wa's turnip and smoked mackerel maki sushi which were adapted by the owner to Irish tastes to introduce sushi to the area. From the Kasbah wine bar above the pub, we had brown bread with crab salad and pickled onion. Our next stop was Petite Delice where we sampled a mini tartlet/petit four with custard and strawberry. We then walked to the Galway Market (like an outdoor farmer's market) and sampled the vegetarian potato and pea curry, which was hot, with a kick, and very tasty. Then we stopped at Brown's Oysters, and were invited under the tent in the rain for freshly shucked oysters with a squeeze of lemon. Wow were they fresh! Our next stop was Hazel Mountain Chocolate, first trying hot chocolate which was dark and not too sweet. We also sampled four types of chocolate used for the bars. At Cupan Tae, we sampled a zucchini matcha cake with matcha frosting and a dollop of lemon curd. This was so me and I loved it! Our final stop was Kai Restaurant, in the upper party room decorated with cookbooks. We had a fabulous brown bread topped with local ricotta and heirloom tomatoes. It was a truly delicious day as we meandered around the city center eating and drinking our way through. Sheena was very knowledgeable and personable, and I would highly recommend the experience for any visitors to Galway! I have to add that it rained during the tour, so she went to a store and bought umbrellas. She gave us one of them at the end of the tour and did not ask for it back or for any money. This was very generous and kind. She also provided us a goodie bag with a free tea from Petite Delice, a bottle of water, and a chocolate bar from McCambridge's!

Patrick took the scenic coastal route and through the Burren to Doolin, there and back, so everyone had the opportunity to experience the views. Every step of the way was timely and well-organized. We never felt rushed and had just the right amount of time at each stop.

The value of the tour was great, only costing around $45 (42.50 euros) for an eight hour tour. I was able to select the pickup point at a nearby hotel. The bus was prompt and we headed on our way shortly after 10am. The tour bus driver was an absolute delight. Incredibly friendly and full of knowledge and funny stories. We stopped at a couple spots along the way including a castle, a very old cemetery, and a pub in Doolin. We drove through the Burren on our way which was a really interesting sight to see. I enjoyed learning about the geology of such a unique place. We had adequate time to explore the Cliffs of Moher once we arrive - almost 2 hours to roam around, take pictures, and check out the gift shop. Then we made our way back to Galway and arrived around 6pm. The timing was perfect and I really feel like it was a valuable experience. So glad I booked a group tour instead of renting a car and trying to navigate to the cliffs myself - the roads to get there were really wild and I'm not sure I could've handled it on my own (plus, it would've been way more expensive). I'll also note that the tour company reached out the day before my scheduled tour to let me know they had to reschedule due to the snow and ice that rolled through that night. They put me onto the tour the following day and communication was seamless throughout. I highly recommend booking your tour through Galway Tour Company!

We were on tiny roads, nearly in the middle of nowhere. My husband spotted the sign "Trump International". We had no idea that it was out there. We turned around to check it out. As we entered the property we came to a little gate house. A nice looking man, came out to greet us. He asked if we were checking in. We told him we were just driving by. I was holding my breath, I thought he might tell us to turn around. To our absolute delight he smiled his fantastic smiled and said with a bit of a giggle "Just wanted to have a look see?" We said yes, that we just wanted to see it. He told us where to park and encouraged us to go upstairs to the restaurant "at least have a coffee while you're here". We looked about the incredibly maintained grounds. Checked out the back of the property. Looked over the pro shop. Then went upstairs to the restaurant bar. The bartender was VERY professional but also kind. When I asked him sheepishly if I could keep one of the little cloth coasters, he said sure and "take this too" as he tossed me a pen. We went back to the pro shop looking for a sweatshirt. The extremely gracious employee in the shop told me that they'd be in the gift shop. He said it was closed. He made a call and said "she's opening it up". Then he walked us through the property to take us to the gift shop. I love my sweatshirt. What a fabulous little surprise on our adventure.
