Eugene was great the first time I called him, but I guess it was an off day because since then he's turned out to be one of those ghosting contractors who doesn't show up, doesn't call back, and makes you waste your time waiting for him without the courtesy of a call to let you know he has no intention of showing up. I even texted and called to check the status of the appointment when I noticed they were more than 15 minutes late. I received no response. p.s. they charge $175 to even come out and identify the problem and a hefty hourly rate too. A bit expensive, sure. They are really nice guys who diagnosed my electrical problem almost immediately as well as determining another problem with my circuit breakers that I was not aware of. I called Gambi based on the high recommendations on this site, but it has turned out to be a nightmare. Eugene came in a timely manner to repair two exterior lights that weren't working correctly, meaning the lights would come on sometimes with the timer, sometimes not, and sometimes flicker. He said I needed a new timer for one, which he purchased and I reimbursed him for. He and his assistant tried for some time to program the timer, but did a poor job of it and the light would go on some days, not on others. I ultimately programmed it myself and it works ok. The other fixture he allegedly fixed continued to blow out bulbs. I replaced the bulbs myself several times, but figured there must be a problem with the fixture so I called him to come back. (To his credit, Eugene answers his phone and comes when he says he will.) Eugene came back on two more occasions to rectify the problem, but he just changed bulbs, which would blow out several days after he changed them. On his last visit, he accused me of just wanting him to change bulbs, which was highly insulting as well as incorrect. I have better things to do with my time than to schedule someone to come change lightbulbs, and the fact is that had he done his job correctly the first time, he wouldn't have had to return. I've owned this house for 12 years and know that changing exterior fixture bulbs is not a weekly chore. In the past I've had contractors who, when faced with a job outside of their competency level, would have the integrity to admit as much. This job was obviously over Eugene's head, but that didn't stop him from wasting my time and money. Save yourself the headache. Don't use Gambi. read more

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Okay - here's the story. I have this annoying chandelier that keeps crazily lighting on fire and blowing out. But I love it and so I had it fixed a couple of times at my old place and even took it with me when I moved. Fast forward to Prospect Heights....same old, same old: my light starts doing it's crazy stuff, light bulbs start blowing out, children and adults alike in the house are scared. I decide to check out Yelp for electrician reviews in my new hood. Gambi has great ones so I decide to give them a try. I call at 9am, by 9:30am, I have a returned call and by 10am Eugene is here fixing my light. He tells me it has to go with him to the hospital and I figure I'll be without it for at least a week. Nope - he says it will be back in two hours and it is. He installs it, all of the lights work again and I am a satisfied customer. But then..... an hour later, I am upstairs and I hear a huge crash. I come down to see that one of the big crystal balls around the lights has fallen and shattered. Glass is everywhere and the light is ruined. It's after 5pm (of course), but I call and leave a message. Five minutes later my call is returned. 10 mins later, Eugene is back. He then proceeds to spend TWO PLUS HOURS sweeping and vacuuming and all kinds of crazy clean up for the incredible mess. And then without my saying anything, he proceeds to make arrangements for how to replace the globe that has shattered (which I later found out was no easy feat and I know it cost a bundle). He got the globe quickly and replaced it right away. When I effusively thanked him for customer service unlike what I usually get, he said that his work is good quality so this almost never happens, but when it does, this is what he does because it's what should be done. Amazing. Too bad it's so not the norm. oh and... 1) the issue was not his fault -- the light had been faultily repaired (he showed me - it was super bootleg) by the previous handyman that I had come 2) several weeks later and no issues with the light 3) not one piece of glass. NOT ONE. we all know how hard that is, right? there must have been two million shards and I have toddlers...and bare feet so I was super grateful. read more

Topline: Thorough, patient, pleasant, dedicated to fixing the problem. Fair price. It's the kind of service that's rare. Can't recommend Eugene and Gambi highly enough. Background: I live in a 2-bedroom, 3yr-old condo in Park Slope. The fuse to a room that houses our washer & dryer, water heater and boiler/hvac kept blowing out last week (3x in 7-day span). Called Gambi after reading some of the positive reviews on Yelp and because he was local to the neighborhood. Called around 5pm, and he said he'd be over w/in 2 hours, arrived at 6:30pm. Fast. Once he came over, he took a look at the fuse in the fuse box. He said it was likely a blown fuse that should be replaced. But he said it could also be, in some cases, the way the 3 power outlets were connected and spliced in the room; and that he'd like to make sure, otherwise I'd be calling again in a few weeks. He checked the first 2 outlets in the room and saw they were without power, but the 3rd outlet in the room was essentially inaccessible, behind a stacked washer/dryer unit that was REALLY REALLY hard to reach. In fact, washer & dryer unit was in this room so tight that we've always wondered how it ever got installed in the first place. Eugene said in order to really be sure what the root of the electrical problem was, he'd need to check the outlet; so had to move the top dryer half of the unit. The man climbed a ladder, slid into the narrowest, dustiest of spaces between the dryer and ceiling to unplug the unit, turn off the gas valve. Then we spent an hour slowly, meticulously removing the unit. Sweat, dust, strength, geometry, patience - he used all in good measure. Went to his truck 3 different times to get the right tools to unhook the gas tube, disconnect the vent, etc. Finally got the unit down, and he checked the outlet. Unfortunately, it wasn't the source of the problem - but I respect that he needed to check it to make sure. He did say the power outlet was the wrong kind - a ground wire outlet (the kind with the reset buttons you see in bathrooms), but essentially inaccessible and unnecessary. So he changed that, re-checked the wiring in the wall. Said now we wouldn't ever have to worry about the wiring in that room again. He then changed the fuse in the fuse box that he suspected was the source of the problem in the first place. He spent another 30 minutes carefully re-installing the dryer unit and putting things back as they were (he climbed back into the narrow space to re-attach the gas valve, plug and vent. Tested the gas valve seal with soapy water to make sure it was re-attached sans leakage). He even thoroughly vacuumed the fuse box that was filled with wood dust and debris, the sloppy aftermath of lazy contractors - and the suspected source of our blown fuse, he said. He charged me simply for the 1 1/2 hours of his time, at the rate he initially quoted me on the phone. Didn't even charge me for the new fuse he used to replace the blown one. And beyond all that - Eugene was totally a chill, pleasant dude the whole time. Great to talk to. Explained what he was doing as he was going through everything. Never once said anything negative or sideways or expressed impatience or that passive aggressive heavy sighing bullshit. Conclusion: This is the kind of experience you just don't think exists anymore. The thoroughness, the desire to work at the problem until it's fixed. The helpful disposition. The straight-forwardness. The helpfulness. It was like having your expert handyman uncle or something coming over to fix something you know nothing about. Highly recommend calling Eugene/Gambi if you ever need an electrician. -jp read more

Great company. Called them to install a box for a ceiling fan. Eugene called right back to set up an appointment. Even when I got the date wrong and missed my appointment, they came over later the same day. They weren't able to install the box without completely rewiring, (I'm renting), but they didn't charge me to look and I appreciate not having a sketchy ceiling fan hanging in my apartment. We did a big renovation -- not quite a gut, but close. Our GC rewired the whole place. His electrician left us with 10-12 outlets showing no ground. GC refused to fix it... he was very passive-aggressive. I called Eugene @ Gambi, who came over, figured out the problems (they were a bit more involved than he first thought), and sorted them out without a lot of fuss. Charged a reasonable price. I wasn't on site to meet him, but my sister was, and she liked him. That's saying something. She's pretty finicky when it comes to liking people. We needed a couple ceiling fans put in thanks to Lowes' well-documented incompetence. I called Gambi, gave my info, and Kevin and Eugene showed up punctually. They installed the two fans quickly. They cleaned up everything, boxing the previous fixtures neatly. The most important thing was the a key tool was missing from the box of one fan and Eugene went back to his van and found something to suffice. We had 6 flush ceiling spots in a garden floor apartment that were intermittent or out entirely. He explained why they were malfunctioning, pulled them down carefully, and did the necessary repairs. I highly recommend Gambi. He was knowledgeable, and happy to explain what needed to be done. He returned my calls promptly and worked with my schedule. I had him come in to replace and correct damage left by a different contractor. A previous contractor did some repair work on the facade of my building, disconnecting, dismantling and throwing out a perfectly working exterior intercom panel. He also moved the door release wiring. None of which was supposed to be done. Gambi didn't try to convince me that I needed an entirely new system. Gambi also didn't berate me for the misdeeds of the previous contractor. He easily replaced the missing panel and connected it to the existing system. He was also able to quickly identify the wiring for the door release, replace the connection, and get it working again. I appreciate the fact that Gambi was able to give me an honest quote and didn't try to tag extra fees on at the site. I would definitely use his services for other electrical issues. read more

Excellent service. I needed the light fitting in my kitchen replacing with a new one, and the dimmer switch replacing with an on/switch. They called an hour before to confirm the appointment and turned up on time. They did the work quickly and efficiently, and were friendly, polite and courteous. It took less than an hour to do the work so charged me the $150 first hour fee. Gambi were everything you hope for in a service and I would definitely recommend them. read more

I cannot say enough about Eugene. We were having a wall taken down in an apartment, and the contractor (wonderful, but not a licensed electrician) found old exposed and live wiring embedded in the wall. This was on a late Saturday afternoon. I called Eugene immediately because he was so highly rated on Yelp. He called back in about 20 minutes and was in the apartment within 2 hours, turned off the electricity and secured the wiring. He returned a few days later and did extensive work in the apartment for a day and a half. He worked beautifully with the other contractors, made time and money saving suggestions, did little things like tightening fixtures without asking, and left the place cleaner than when he arrived. He worked beautifully with his assistant, a hardworking and good humored young man. All this at very reasonable prices. I wish I could give them six stars! I called Mr. Tapia yesterday and we set up an appointment for today to fix an outlet at my uncle's apartment. He and his associate Rashid came in just at the agreed time. They fixed the particular outlet plus thightened a couple more that were loose; they also installed a couple of light bulbs which I was afraid to do because the ceilings are very high. I asked Mr. Tapia to check my aunt's apartment next door since she also had a problem with the ceiling light. Not only they fixed it but he also went to Lowe's and bought a new lamp to replace the old one completely since the wires were pretty burnt. The lamp was only $15 and he kept the cost within the original estimate of one hour althought the entire process took longer than that. I was very pleased with the experience and will certainly call them again if I have any future electric problems. They were both very pleasant and profesional. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for honest and responsable electricians. read more
