i came here yesterday after an appointment and i can say i thoroughly enjoyed my rolls. i walked in at approximately 11:10am and asked if i could dine in. since it was empty, the sweet hostess told me i could sit where ever i'd like. she handed me a menu and gave me a good amount of time to decide what I wanted. i opted for a coke, the beyonce roll 2 (includes spicy salmon & avocado) and the tropical roll (includes salmon, tuna, yellowtail & mango). both rolls were very good quality fish, great taste. they were also a great size. i started getting full when i had about 6 nice sized pieces left. i'd love to come back here and try their seaweed salad & gyozas. my total for everything was $30 which i thought was fair because of the service and the food quality. definitely stop in here! read more

My friend Win C. recommended this sushi place to me awhile back. I never dined-in here and only did take-out. The restaurant is on the small side and it's probably best to come in pairs or a group of four people max. I tried their chicken teriyaki entree and the spicy tuna rolls lunch special. I enjoyed both of my meals. The prices are here are quite affordable and you'll get a decent amount of food. There's no bathroom available in the restaurant I think is illegal for a dine in restaurant not to have any available washroom for their customers. There's no water given to customers as well. The food was decent, not exceptional. With this kind of service and amenities, I would not recommend this place. read more

Don't let the "Express" in their name fool ya, it's the perfect place to dine-in as well. It's been about 10 years since I've eaten year (yes they've been around quite a while!), and they haven't lost a beat. I ate here for lunch yesterday and received super service and high quality sushi. I've been on a bit of a low carb lifestyle as of late so I ordered the basic sashimi platter. It doesn't come with miso soup or salad however I was generously offered both on the house, incredible!! You can tell they really care about their customers from the way they interact with everyone. Probably one of the better casual takeout sushi spots that I've been to with the prices being comparable or just slightly more expensive than your typical take out sushi spot. Came here on my birthday and was in the mood for sushi..... Lots of it.......decided to look around the area and lo and belong this place popped up. Went inside and saw it was a super small mom and pop shop, run by Koreans, which in my experience usually is a good sign as far as quality and freshness of sushi. My friend is ordering a big platter of sashimi. Just all raw fish. Nothing else for lunch. Me, I play it on the safe side and order a california roll and a salmon cucumber roll. Our food arrives. Hmmm... my sushi rolls are a bit messy looking. Does the chef even care about the food he's serving? But, let's just ignore that. Maybe I'm just thinking too much. We can't make sushi rolls neat all the time... (Even though we are the only customers in here right now). So I look over at my friend's dish. Yeah, that sashimi is plated okay looking. Great hidden sushi spot in Queens. They do sushi here very well. Their spicy rolls are ACTUALLY spicy and they don't need a sauce on top to make it a "spicy roll" (I hate when sushi spots do stupid stuff like that) This spot was very affordable and the fish tasted high quality! I love the owners of this place. My sister introduced me to this place. Despite the fact that the restaurant is small, there are cute decorations on the wall (some hand-drawn) along with pictures of food which isn't located on the menu. My favorite food on their menu is the tuna tar-tar, the spicy tuna roll, craig roll and the volcano roll. Everything is decently priced for a good bargain! The tuna tar-tar is uncooked tuna but with bits of crunch inside of it! Spicy tuna rolls were always my favorite. The volcano roll, it's a blast of delicious flavors in your mouth. It really is like a volcano exploding in your mouth. At least it is to me :) Also they got free delivery. Though its always good to tip since theyre making their way over. read more

This is one of my favorite sushi spots! It definitely depends on what you get! The parking isn't so great but if you go around the corner, you're bound to find a residential spot. I highly recommend the Chef Special roll, Morimoto roll and the Nike roll. I've been getting these rolls nonstop for YEARS and they even memorized my order when I call! I came here for lunch based on other reviews. Parking is hit or miss in front or around the block, so you may need to walk a bit, but that's the area for you. The place is a cute little hole in the wall; you can sit at one of the tables or do take out. When I got there for lunch plenty of tables were available but it did get mush busier. To order you just walk up and the cashier/server will take your order. The same to pay, its. It typical sit down service. There is no sushi bar seating here like many other sushi places. I ordered a soft shell crab app and a sushi lunch box. I got my soup within a minute and the crab a few minutes later. I love how thy cut the crab into pieces and it was literally right out of hr deep fryer and on my plate in the same minute. It was better than I expected, but need some salt. Then I had to wait for a hit for my sushi lunch box. There is only one chef and he was making lunch for two for another couple that was sitting there since I walked in. I waited a good 15 minutes for it BUT IT WAS worth it. The fish was super fresh and they give you very large pieces. And honestly, the spicy tuna roll was the best I've had in a while - it was just the way I like it. The only thing I didn't like was the salad dressing; it was more of a white mayo based sauce, not the orange ginger sauce you find everywhere else. The $12 sushi lunch box is a great deal for what you get. I would definitely go here again, recommended! read more

My go to sushi spot. I absolutely love this place just because its a local business that's not a big fancy restaurant. Besides the kind people that run the place, what makes this place unique is their rolls. I typically pick different specialty sushi rolls and ask them to put it in a platter. My favorites are the monster mountain roll, house special roll, paradise roll, angel roll, spicy spider roll, sweet chilly roll, Cindy roll, and dragon roll 2. Their rolls are absolutely unique yet so delicious. They design the platter so beautiful with flowers and butterfly-like crackers. I would give them a 5 but the reason I give them a 4 is because like all humans, there are times I preorder and the sushi is not ready on time. Therefore I end up having to make another trip back or waiting 15-20 mins. Besides that, the food and people are amazing. read more

I'm a big fan of their bento boxes as well as their miso soup, and in all honesty their miso soup is the only one I actually like out all other restaurants I've tried. For a tiny little spot, it really hit the spot. I was especially happy that this place gives you a bang for your buck. I was treating 4 people so it helped that the lunch specials are good even through the weekend. The Bento Boxes are really good and the fish tasted very fresh. We ordered: Salmon Teriakyi and Sushi Bento Boxes and we loved them. Salmon box served with delicious Ramen noodles, white rice with black sesame, nice size of salmon, raw broccoli, and miso soup. The sushi box had a mix of salmon, yellowtail, and Tuna fish, with a spicy yellowtail roll, salad and miso soup. The Beyonce Roll looked and tasted beautiful and the 007 Bond roll looked nice too. The owner and wife work the restaurant and they are super nice and accommodating. Small location next door to the famous bagel shop and just down the street from Barnes and Noble. I think this place is starting to get popular because although they do not advertise, word of mouth in this neighborhood goes a long way. read more

My boyfriend and I constantly come back to Gan Da because of their good prices and great tasting sushi. The only food items we've had here were their speciality rolls (they have a HUGE selection), edamame and their fried ice cream. Lately I've been sticking to the same rolls (I usually pick the Fujisan roll) but all of the rolls that I have tried at this place have always been great. My boyfriend usually gets the Nike roll, Michael Oher roll and USA roll. Our last visit he got the Michael Oher roll, Transformer roll and Dr. Fish roll and when I asked him how he liked it, his response was "they're all yummy!". He's also a big fan of the sweet sauce lol. The Fujisan roll I always order has the sweet sauce and if there was extra on my plate, he would dip his sushi into my sweet sauce. Okay, that did not sound appropriate...=X lol. My cousin was the one that first introduced me to this place and he used to frequent it a lot because the owners (husband and wife) knew him by name whenever he walked in. The only thing is service is kind of slow but staff is always very pleasant. A few times when my boyfriend and I went in the beginning of 2015, there was a younger guy managing the cashier and he would take FOREVER but he was very nice. I saw a review about younger guys taking over this establishment but I always see the older Korean man working behind the sushi refrigerator (who I'm assuming is one of the owners because he was the one that would always greet my cousin when we first started going 3+ years ago) so not sure what that comment was about. I mean, I could be wrong but just writing what I've been seeing from going to this place multiple times. They recently had their menu put into one of those clear paged binders. They used to just give you their paper take-out menu to order from but that wasn't a big deal. Just felt to mention it here haha. Great prices, great tasting sushi, nice staff, conveniently located with easy to find street parking...what's there to complain about? The place is small though so don't go with a group of 15+ people. My friend saw I kept checking into this place and decided to go one day but she didn't tell me she was going with a big group and they couldn't accomodate so she had to go somewhere else. Miso soup: surprisingly few places do this basic soup right, and this place is one of them; flavorful without the oil or too much salt. Takoyaki (check the pick): tender octopus inside a creamy batter. Topped with bonito flakes and drizzled lightly with sauce and mayo. Kalbi box: Marinated beef with sides of rice, a bit of broccoli, salad and ramen noodles in light, savory sauce. Tempura Udon: the tempura batter was crunchy, flavorful and light. Though I suggest you ask for the tempura on the side if you order this one, so it preserves the crunch instead of being drowned soggy. We will definitely come back to sample the sushi! Addendum: tried the sushi. Menu has about 100 sushi combo (including "NY Ginants" (sic) and "J.E.T.S."). Sushi were passable, soy sauce was on the weak side (diluted with water or my palate has been scarred by years of salty foods), brown sauce was a bit on the heavy/starchy side but a good blend of sweet & salt. First dining experience wins over second time. Service was great both times; they're really cheerful here, yelling out "Welcome!" and "Thank you!" to each customer, and they sound like they mean it. read more

I have been coming here since Fall of 2010, when my boyfriend introduced me to sushi :) This is my go-to place for sushi, especially for lunchtime. I call it "Sushi-cat" because its identifying sign has a happy cat with a fish in its mouth, with more pictures of this cat inside with "always happy cat" next to them. When I go here, I am "always happy cat!" This cozy gem has an epic amount of rolls and meals to choose from! I highly recommend the lunch and dinner box deals as they are a fantastic value. Honestly, the prices are very reasonable here, especially compared to other places nearby. The quality of the fish is also great. The fish always tastes fresh and is well cut. I especially enjoy the salmon, which melts in your mouth, and the eel. I usually am not a tuna person, but I love the tuna here. The miso soup is a tasty starter and the seaweed salad is large enough to share with a friend (or hungry boyfriend!) What I love even more than the food are the friendly people who work there! When you enter, the sushi chef will greet you with a smile, sometimes even multitask and take your order. This is a tiny sushi restaurant just off Union Turnpike in Fresh Meadows. They've been around for many years, thriving in seclusion. From the outside, you can easily walk past this place without realizing there's a sushi restaurant..lol And once you're inside, its very small with only a few seats available. However, their sushi is consistently good. I like their lunch specials, large variety of rolls and the ratio of filling to rice. Although, I ate their recently and I've noticed their quality has dropped a bit. I ordered a Dragon Roll and it came out with barely any eel in it. I think this place caters to the St. John's crowd as evidenced by the students that were eating here, but also because there are some cheap dishes that serve hearty, carbolicious portions. My friend and I ordered a few of the special rolls and a spicy korean ricecake dish with fishcake from a special on the wall. I recommend that you stick with the sushi. The sushi was very good with no complaints. The korean ricecake dish was massive and very filling. It had a good spicy kick but wasn't exactly what I was looking for or craving. It also seemed like this place is popular with their neighbors. There were some kids (like 10yo) coming in and ordering food for their parents and a bunch of others ordering take out. Very creative fun names. Rolls have LOT of fish, little rice, which is what I like. Only thing I had a problem with was their rice. Wish it was more buttery and less dry (may sound funny, but true rice fans know what I'm talking about). I had their fried tempuras and it was fresh, hot and good tempura sauce. Transformer was pretty good and Manhattan and New York weren't far behind. Basically, when you look at their menu you are overwhelmed with delicious specialty rolls at moderate price for pretty good quality. I didn't get sick eating and neither did my friend.
