So--I've been going to Garbo for maybe a year and a half. Prior to that, I was a LOYAL Aveda Institute patron, like decades--I figured, help a student out, get a discounted service--everybody wins! (I still recommend the institute for folks who don't mind being in a student-centered, learning environment). That said--Garbo has been a true difference maker. My stylist, Jay, is a consummate professional and just the best for this curly haired chic! Case in point--a while ago I somewhat nervously asked about bangs and after a consultation with him, I said "why not?" ...For all you curly haired folks out there, you KNOW how quickly bangs can go wrong. And--I've got NOTHING but compliments on them. I trust him implicitly and he's done an amazing job gradually lifting my dark brown to a lighter but still warm shade. Muah! read more

I've been a loyal customer for over a decade. While I love the nail technician, Ashley, who is very lovely and did a great job with the application, the gel polish began peeling off in less than 24 hours. I found myself back at the salon the next day to have them redone; unfortunately, the gel polish had not held. The same issue reoccurred the following day. I called the salon and spoke with the technician, who said she didn't know why it kept happening. She felt uncomfortable asking Marsha, the owner, to reimburse me. I offered to speak with the owner and requested a reimbursement for the service (not the generous 25% tip I had left). Instead of listening and working to resolve the issue, Marsha seized the opportunity to correct me about the kind of salon she operates, which felt condescending and unnecessary, especially considering our long-standing customer relationship. It was particularly frustrating to hear her claim that her salon only uses quality polish, which contradicted the fact that she uses an inferior product. Her tone was dismissive and borderline insulting. I expected fair treatment for a service that failed almost immediately. Instead, Marsha suggested that my nails were in poor condition. I explained that I'm new to using gel products, and even her technician had remarked that my nails were in good shape, suggesting I could continue using gel polish for several months. Then, I should consider taking a break between services to let my nails rest. Unfortunately, instead of addressing the issue, Marsha chose to hang up on me. It's disappointing to be treated this way as a loyal client. I love my hair stylist, the esthetician, and the nail technician, but I question continuing to use Garbo for my salon services. I have known Marsha many many years and in the last few I have had Connie as my stylist! She has owned salons for many years and in the last few yrs decided to leave the hassle of running a business and provide direct care to individuals. She works with you then determines what needs to be done ! She is incredible with razor cuts, and a new technique. feather, layering, or textured layering, !!! This blend allows your hair to grow and have length yet is textured. You have easy movement because of the texturing !! I highly recommend this experienced stylist !! Kendi is a color master! Kendi recent gave me my first balayage and I loved it so much I trusted her to give me my first vibrant color! My natural hair color is a medium brown (#4-#5), Kendi incorporated it to a #8. She listened as I explained my hesitancy with the bleaching aspect of the balayage since my last bleaching was overprocessed and left my hair fried. Kendi added a botanical to the formula to help protect my hair and she watched the processing closely so I wouldn't over process! The color was so beautiful and my hair was still soft. The next time I went to see her, I asked her to do a dark royal blue color. She had to foil in some additional bleaching to prepare the canvas and again she took care to not let me over process. While she did my color, she taught me how to car for the color - using cold water to wash, wash less frequently, don't use high heat to style or dry...etc. and she mixed the remainder of my color formula in with a bottle of conditioner that I purchased. I am able to reapply the color before a wash to keep it from fading too quickly. I'm loving it and feel happy about my decision but I would NEEVER have let anyone else do it. I've gotten my haircut several times at this location. I usually choose their most junior stylist because I always get a basic cut and appreciate the price point. I'm so impressed by the service I receive each time I come in. I'm always offered a beverage while I wait. When it's time for my appointment, I am always greeted by a lovely stylist who washes my hair, cuts it and styles it for a very affordable price. My hair stylist of 16 years changed industries and I was lost in where to go or who to see! I had relied on her expertise for so long that I had no idea there could be so many hair mishaps! Combine that with the timing of going gray! I tried 4 other stylists at 4 other salons who overpromised and drastically underdelivered. I booked with Connie at Garbo on a whim and I'm so happy I did! Connie was honest about what could and couldn't be done to fix my color that was looking less than stellar from my previous experience with other stylists. This place is awful! Every time I get a haircut the stylist I had previously used has left. This visit, Gretchen, was my stylist. First, when I arrived no one told me she was running late, second they did not setup the treatments for my appointment correctly so their would not be enough time. Instead, I would have to cut then and come back for my color. I came back in 2 days for color and we again discussed that I wanted some highlights but wanted my gray covered. Gretchen, mentioned it would be more cost effective (NOT EVEN CLOSE) to get a partial so me trusting that she knows better than I do (I normally do an all over and then add highlights), I allowed her to proceed. Once the color was done, it was difficult to see as the lighting is a bit dim and I have some eye sight issues (which I mentioned to Gretchen), so I didn't see all the gray. Gretch told me she would give me two weeks and then said no, one week that if I didn't like the highlights I could come back. I soon as I got home other noticed right away! How disappointing!! I set up an appointment and then get a call from Gretchen with BS saying that I had to take the color adjustment at the time of service or it isn't covered as a color correction. What kind of crap is that?!! Especially after, I didn't get the service I wanted done correctly and it was over $200 as she added in like an additional $100 and couldn't really explain why 3 toners were needed? My hair is short. So save what money??!! Now, I would have to pay someone else to correct her mistake and I'm out the $300+ I paid for this crap. NO MORE GARBO, EVER! If you're looking for some kind of retro or vintage style hair, Brianna is your Gal Friday. She will have your hair not only stylin', but ready to take on whatever jive life throws at you. She is an absolute master when it comes to creating a look that is uniquely you and she does her research on hairstyles of olden days. I tend to go for a 1940s or 1950s sort of look (think a middy haircut - which she can modernify to fit your lifestyle if you're not ready to commit to a true middy). I am really pleased with the results. She always sends me out the door with the perfect pageboy style. So if you're looking to recreate your grandmother's style, check her out! The salon is pretty great as well. It is clean, the front desk folks are welcoming, and just the overall customer experience is done well. Go see Michelle Jameson! Michelle is new talent at Garbo, but she's extremely skilled. An expert with color, she also does great cuts. I followed her from the Aveda school and she always makes my hair look great. Plus, she's a wonderful, down-to-earth human being. Great to talk to if you like that sort of thing, but also if you're like me and don't love to chat, she's comfortable with the silence. Garbo is an Aveda salon, which is very important to me. I love their products and approach. Plus, Garbo has a solid training and recruitment program, which means all their stylists are awesome. I found Garbo on Yelp, it was one of the highest rated salons in Austin. I also liked a haircut picture someone had posted on Yelp, done by Brianna. So I scheduled an appt with Brianna and am happy to say I've found "my" stylist. She has cut my hair for the past few years and is fabulous, always working meticulously to make sure every strand is the way you want it. I've even gone back the same day after a haircut to get my side bangs cut shorter (we left them a little long so I could see what I liked) and everyone was super sweet---it's the worst when you go back in for a modification and they treat you poorly (we've all been there, am I right?!). I watch everyone as I'm getting my hair done and it seems like a happy family of stylists there, the mood is always jolly. Oh, and you MUST get a cup of their coffee while you wait, it's part of the experience! So happy to have found Garbo! I always feel like a million bucks when I leave. I called one of the salons listed on the Aveda website that was advertising a "Free Service On Us, No Strings Attached" promotion , Garbo Salon and Spa was one of the salons listed on there. I made an appointment online on Monday, 12/14/20, then I called to confirm my appointment for today. I told her it was for the promotion that was set up thru Aveda, and the snooty lady who answered told me, "Oh Ok, I'll let it go THIS TIME." Seriously?!?! that was the crappy customer service I received because I guess I wasn't going to be a paying customer. This really made me feel very uncomfortable and who knows what kind of looks or stares I would have gotten had I gone. I can afford to pay but who wouldn't have taken advantage of such a great offer, am I right? But really did she have to be so crappy and snobby like that? Is that what this salon represents? AND then I called to cancel, because like hell I was going to go in there after being spoken to like that....another lady named Isabella tells me, "well there's a 24 hour cancellation fee but I'm going to go ahead and let it go this time"Pffft....oh ok...whatever. I was able to make a same-day appointment here - the place is well staffed - and got a wonderful haircut from Brianna. I got a long bob with some layers and a sideswept bang. She listened to me, and gave me exactly what I asked for. She was also wiling to advise me when I asked directly, but she didn't try to push me into anything. She also explained the techniques she was doing, which I really appreciated. An excellent haircut - and very affordable! I am very pleased! But the salon deserves five stars not just for the cut, but also for the service. The reception desk is extremely friendly and positive, and you offered coffee, tea, candy and cookies as soon as you walk in the door. The ambiance is very pleasant, up to the standard of other Aveda salons I have visited. My hair dresser Brianna was super sweet, a good conversationalist when I wanted to talk, and also happy to work without talking when I just wanted to observe the cut. Now, we're in dangerous territory, I'm a curvy girl with a round face; short curly hair is going to be tough to pull off. Ashlee did it with flying colors, though. Decided to finally get myself a much needed haircut and called Garbo today to see if they take walk-ins or if they had an available appointments. They were able to fit me in a few hours later with Ann and I was not disappointed! The staff was friendly and welcoming upon my arrival. My stylist Ann was wonderful from beginning to end. She was very easy to talk to and helped me nail down the perfect cut for my hair type. Her head massages are absolutely AMAZING and her haircuts are too! I've come here three times - with Vanessa each time - and I love this place. Everyone is super friendly and the salon is so clean. They always offer me coffee or water when I come in, take my coat, and make me feel right at home. Vanessa is fun to talk to and understands the ins and outs of being a curly haired girl.
