I believe the hesitation was to consider if it was "safe" to make the joke that he did. The shop is not a large space and I did not want to lose my temper and escalate anything, so I pretended to laugh and told him I needed my relatives' approval before buying anything. Well. I have a lot of racist relatives. They would defend this man. I won't. I will not give him money, theirs, mine, or anyone else's. It's sad to hear a local business owner and operator, otherwise welcoming, kind and polite, talk like that because it undoes his kindness--he's only willing to show it to people who look like he does. It's disturbing because this is not the screaming, overt racism of domestic terrorists and our government of 2026. it's insidious. It's literally in our mom and pop next door local businesses. He emailed me an initial estimate and then brought up one of the cassettes; it was in particularly rough shape - the tape was old and had issues and the sound quality was not great to start with. I especially appreciated Steve's communication about this cassette. After he tried a few things, he let me know its condition and then asked how much time I wanted him to spend on it. He presented me with where he would start and, if it didn't work, what he would do next. I explained it was a bit of a family heirloom and so I wanted him to do whatever it took. After another week, he explained the steps he took and then sent me the updated bill. This communication and care with the projects made this a very easy and comfortable process. Ten years ago the cheap glasses I had bought were fixed for free and when I needed new glasses, I decided to return to the nice man who had fixed my cheap glasses for free. He fitted me perfectly for progressive lenses and those lenses saved my vision. Can you get cheaper glasses somewhere else? No. You simply cannot, because hour for hour of wear these are absolutely the most cost effective, comfortable, and in my case safest available. The staff are extremely talented, knowledgeable, efficient, and helpful. There are roughly 24,000 waking hours in a four year period. If you invest less than a half penny for each of those hours you more than cover any premium you would save going to McGlasses or McGlasses.com and you will have the finest glasses available.
