Garcia's Auto Repair & smog is the BEST mechanic shop and has serviced my cars for about 25 years!!!. He kept both my Honda civics running for over 500,000 miles!! I sold my 1989 (back in 2010), but my 2002 is still my daily commuter car to SB and has 530,000+ miles. My Honda is on the second engine (replaced at 489,000 miles) and still gets 38-40 mpg on the highway :) If you need a good, honest mechanic El Pidio & his son should be your only shop to call!!! read more

I was able to schedule an appointment an hour hence by telephone to have my 1995 Corvette smogged. Garcia's is one of the few that is able to work on my vehicle due to its OBD1 system with OBD2 connector port. The work was performed within a half hour while I waited. Garcia's Auto and Smog Repair has the best customer service I have experienced in an auto shop. They were kind, fast, responsive, and incredibly caring. I unexpectedly had several issues with various parts of my car, and as someone who is not very familiar with car terminology, they were diligent in explaining everything to me. The older woman working there explained to me that they like to do this with all of their customers who aren't familiar with cars in order to ensure that they don't get taken advantage of at another shop if the issue were to occur again, and I found this to be incredibly unique and caring. When they discovered there were more repairs to be done and the cost would be higher than initially expected, they took the time to source parts for my car at a much cheaper price than normal so that I would be able to afford the repair. I can not explain how appreciative I was of this. This is now the only shop that I will be getting car repairs done at for the amazing customer service that they offer. Wish I could give them 0 stars. car broke down not even a block down the road after they told me I was fine for a few hour drive home and paid 500$ for them to fix absolutely nothing. Ended up getting a tow truck taking my car to the dealer and they put in parts for my vehicle that's not even for the right car hence it breaking down directly after leaving the shop. I've been a customer of Garcia's since 2014 when I arrived with destroyed back axels from towing my car with the break on (I know, this still hurts). I didn't know anyone in town and they treated me fairly and did their best to keep costs down and explained what they needed to do and why. (Side note: as woman entering a shop, one can often feel out of place and talked down to, but I've always felt respected at Garcia's) I went in today after being on the road for 8 months driving to the east coast and back. I got a smog check and an oil change. They recognized my voice on the phone and it is this kind of customer service that really makes you feel good about supporting a local business. They are open and busy now during Covid after taking a few weeks off. While I was there I felt safe and they were really diligent with their precautions. They even had a cup of pens labeled clean and one label dirty. Signs were posted explaining their policies and all staff and customers were wearing masks. So, I've moved to a new city and I've been putting off the required smog test that I need to renew my vehicle registration because I don't know which shops are good and which are not. I've put it off as long as I can and then I start looking in the phone book, the Internet and calling to get pricing. It seems like a crap shoot and the various reviews I see are all mixed - nothing definitive about any one place. Then I ask the mechanic, Gonzo, who works for my Fiance's family's business. Without hesitation he says to go to Garcias. I give them a call and they quote me the lowest price of every place I have called. I jump in the car and head right over. Its a small and cluttered shop, but they are super friendly, and they can do it right now which is great. And, unlike every other place I called the price they quoted includes any extra charges like $8 for the certificate or anything like that, so the $45 was $45 and not a penny more. Also, its the kind of place where they will take a quick look at the obvious "immediate fail items" like a missing gas cap, or check engine light and just tell you about it and not charge you rather than what most places do which is start the visual part of the test then fail you immediately and then charge you for the test. I'll definitely go back when I need to and I'll recommend this place to anyone who asks. read more

Garcia's worked on an oil leak I had on my BMW X3. We just moved to Goleta from Los Angeles. I almost was going to take my car back to LA just to get fixed, but decided to look for one in Goleta. Elpidio is a very honest, genuine man and mechanic. He fixed my car and made me feel like it was my own father fixing my car. I would highly recommend him to any one new here, any students or anyone that doesn't know who to go to when they need a mechanic. I called to many places and they wanted to charge me just to do an estimate and they also wanted to charge me at least 2 or 3 times more then Garcia's did. I've been to Garcia Auto twice: once for a brake job and then for a smog check. These guys are good-- friendly, no bs, reasonably priced and fast. I called around for cost estimates when my brakes went out and some of the other guys in town quoted prices as high as $950... $750 for the front end alone! For brake pads and a couple of new rotors? The guys at Garcia's did a great job for significantly less money. In other words, they didn't try to rip me off. I will continue to go back to this shop for all of my repairs. read more

Most our friends even drive to LA for cheaper car maitanice price. I am glad I was introduced to his shop by a friend. Their price is really much cheaper than the Toyota dealer. The shop is old and not easy to find. but once you get there, the staff are always very friendly, helpful and considerate. I came to Garcia's late on a Thursday to get two things looked at and possibly repaired on my car. I had read the positive reviews and I was really looking to working with helpful, friendly people and good service. Unfortunately, I received neither. When I dropped my car off, and the woman at the front desk was rude, but I attributed it to a bad day and agreed to pay the $95 fee to have my car checked out. They told me they would look at the car on the next day and call me to tell me what repairs the car would need. I waited, but received no call on Friday. I called on Monday morning to check on the status of my car to find that they hadn't looked at it. I visited the shop in the afternoon and they told me that they still hadn't looked at my car,but they would be able to the next day and call me. I waited on Tuesday for their call, but it never came. When I called at about 4:45 that afternoon, the lady at the front desk answered rudely and put me on hold for 15 minutes before I was able to talk to Elpidio, the mechanic. When Elpidio answered the phone, he told me that he had looked at one of the things I had asked about and that he wasn't sure how to fix it. I decided that I'd had enough and that I wanted to pick my car up, but he told me he was leaving and that I'd have to pick the car up tomorrow. I requested to have him leave the car outside with the key in it so I could pick it up immediately. Throughout this ordeal, I did not receive one call from Garcia's, and though Elpidio was civil enough, I can only describe the lady at the front desk as rude. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with a mechanic, and I would not recommend Garcia's to anyone. read more

Just came back from getting my v-belt changed. This is the 2nd time, I've been to Garcia's. My boyfriend swears by them. The first time, my 2007 Toyota Corolla was acting up on me. The engine would die or wouldn't even start. The man (who I assume to be the owner and I am blanking on his name which was on his shirt, started with an E and was somewhat long) was nice enough to spend time trying to diagnose it free of charge, before he advised me to go to the Toyota dealer around the corner. Turned out to be a computer problem only they could take care of. Like others have said, this place is awesome, no BS. They don't rip you off. The owner is so nice. I, like many chicks, don't know much about cars. I was about to pay upfront, and he nicely told me, never do that! He is the sweetest man. Anyway, great service, great work!!! read more

Needed a smog check and the place I was planning on going to was closed. So I found this shop just down the road. Elpidio took me in quickly, despite being near their closing time. Everyone I dealt with here was friendly and helpful. $50 to smog my car, which is even a little cheaper than lots of other places in town. Finding this place was a pleasant surprise. read more

Garcia's Auto Repair redeemed my faith in Santa Barbara-area mechanics. My vehicle was looked at and repaired promptly. I was given concise explanations of what was possibly wrong with it, and the mechanic willingly explained further when I was confused. No grim predictions, etc. The mechanic picked me up from my work place when my car was ready to go. Reasonable people + reasonable prices is a winning combination in my book. read more

I took my father-in-law's car there to diagnose an emission system problem. Elpidio not only diagnosed and fixed the problem quickly but was able to find a used replacement part that saved my fixed income father-in-law money. This guy is an honest and hard-working mechanic that you can trust. Not a whole lot of those around. The person (Amanda) that was whining about the service she got from the woman at the front desk should go to the her car dealer for service. The dealer will meet your customer service needs but will charge 2 to 4X what Elpidio charges. BTW- I find that woman to be just fine to deal with. read more

My teenage son tells me the 99 Camry will start but then dies within seconds. After emergency road service tows it to Garcia's, the driver leaves the key in the convenient drop box because the shop's closed. When Janet from the shop calls the next day, I find out it's probably the ancient spark plugs and wiring that have to be repaired, and they're hoping it will do the trick. Sure enough that, plus a much needed oil change does the trick, and now I just have to figure out how and where to repair the driver side auto window that seems permanently to be rolled all the way down. read more

An honest and hardworking guy! My engine light has been on for 2 years and no one has been able to figure out what it was, and he did it. The cost was high, but that is expected as expensive parts had failed, and he tried hard to repair them. He kept the car for many days to make sure that what he did would definitely turn the engine light off and enable me to pass the smog check. Would definitely recommend him as a mechanic! I must write a review for Garcia's Auto Repair! I am a commuter, as I live in Oxnard and work in Goleta... I have always had the worst experience with mechanics until I went to Garcia's. This is a family run auto repair shop; no bells and whistles, just a hard working family. Janet and her husband Elpidio made me feel like family; I literally felt like my mom and my dad were fixing my car. I called on a Thursday around 4 PM to see if I could bring my car in for them to look at my brakes (expecting them to say to bring it in on Monday), and Janet asked if I could bring it in the next day, on a Friday, at 9 AM. I went in for break repair on my VW and I could not be happier with the service, cost, honesty, and friendliness!!! They repaired my brake pads and rotors, front and rear, by 4:30 PM, all on a Friday with short notice. This is a GREAT family, and I would much rather give them my business than any other mechanic shop. Thank you Garcia's Auto Repair for all of your hard work!!! Made an appointment for a smog check a few days in advance, but when I arrived the place was totally empty but for a woman in the office on the phone. Ten minutes later she still hadn't set the phone aside to ask why I was there and there were still no mechanics around so I left. The office was extremely dirty/dusty and the whole place gave off a sketchy vibe. Seating area is 3 lawn chairs (also very dirty/dusty) on one side of a painted line in the garage. I have been having a rough time getting my car smogged for years. And then I took it to Garcia's. He discovered that the state has erroneous information about my engine and they think it should be tuned 5 degrees off. So we de-tune it and it passes smog. And runs poorly, uses more fuel and smells bad. So I tune it up so it runs clean and efficiently until I need to pass the smog test, by making much more smog than manufacturer's specs. But them's the California Specs. I would have driven a badly running smog heap around for years if not for Garcia! read more
