The team at TLC removed an old large deck and pergola, and replaced with sod, irrigation, and a large pad and walkway of decomposed granite. The team even reused our old mulch to fill in spots I opted to not landscape at this time, and left our yard looking pristine. I had two last minute requests (one being adding a net for gophers 30 minutes before sod installation) and they were so flexible with no hesitation. I want to add to my initial review two instances where Frank went above and beyond for us on our project. 1. When the pavers we had ordered sight unseen arrived, we immediately hated them and wanted to exchange them for a different color. Frank advised there would be a substantial restocking fee from the retailer for the return, but he would try to convince the retailer to forgive the fee. He had to get his crew to return and restack the pavers just as they'd been in the retailer's yard (and surely do some arm-twisting besides), but we were not assessed any restocking fee as we justly might have been. 2. Some months after our installation was completed, one of the newly-planted trees was not in good health. Although Frank had told us up front that there was no guarantee on trees, he nevertheless replaced and replanted the tree with a different tree at no cost to us. We greatly appreciate Frank's willingness to go to bat for us and to make our project right at his expense. That extra mile counts in customer satisfaction! read more

We contracted with Frank McGuire to have the bank in our backyard cleaned up. It was loaded with leaves and dead grasses and many low hanging bush branches that needed to be removed. It is a bit steep and we just couldnt manage to work on it. Jose Cano was sent to do this work. He was like a ninja gong from one side to the other raking and cutting. He literally filled up his pick up truck with the landscape debris. It was an amazing job! read more

UPDATE: 2/26, I added 2 more stars because they came out today and fixed our large gate and even adjusted our small one. They are also replacing the shrubs During the storms in 2023 our fence blew down and we had this company come out to replace it (roughly 60 ft of fencing and a large entry gate as well as a small (typical) gate. They dropped the old fence onto our shrubs smashing them. We hoped the plants would recover but they never did so we removed them. When they replaced our large gate they put the latch back on lopsided making it impossible to open the gate. My husband texted Frank numerous times with a "I'll send someone out to fix it" but no one ever showed up. I called the company and the lady there said she would let him know. NEVER RECEIVED A RESPONSE AND to date NO ONE HAS COME OUT TO FIX IT. Still unable to open our gate. read more

We hired The Landscape Company to level the backyard, install sod, playground mulch for the kids play area, a decomposed granite pad and retaining/garden wall. Frank was quick to respond to my inquiry and scheduled an on-site visit for a quote. We discussed what we had in mind, and he shared his ideas based on his expertise. This was my first landscape project so I had a ton of questions. Every email and series of questions I had, Frank answered them promptly. Herman and his crew were also great. Arrived on time everyday and knocked the project out sooner than anticipated. Herman answered any questions we had on-site and upon completing the job, they left everything cleaned up. Post completion, Frank stopped by to take a look and also to set up our sprinkler system to ensure our sod settles in properly. Anything that came up afterwards, they have addressed and fixed. We've worked with TLC several times over the past 6 years and are always pleased with the result. This project was for a large concrete pad installation in our side yard. TLC removed an old shed, graded the surface, and poured a new concrete pad. The concrete looks beautiful, and the guys working on it were professional and polite as always. TLC replaced my front lawn in November. Frank was extremely knowledgeable and helpful in the design which includes a dry riverbed, boulders, rock & pavers, plantings and stepping stones. The crew, led by Herman, worked quickly, efficiently and skillfully to complete the job in only a few days. I live near open space, so plants are deer resistant and planted in gopher baskets. A shout out to Kristen who came out to help position the plants. She, too, was helpful and so easy to work with. This company is terrible and unresponsive. This company is responsible for caring for the common areas in the HOA that I live in. They don't do a good job at all. In fact, every week I have to go to tell the workers that they forgot to blow or weed for the homes that are toward the back of the complex. They make the front look tidy and neglect everything else. Also, they recently left a pile of branches and leaves that they cut from the trees in the front in the back. I have the pleasure of seeing this pile right from my bedroom window. I called and the guy who answered said he was an answering service, which I don't believe one bit. Took a message and of course I never received a call back. I've also complained to my HOA several times, still nothing has been done. I will be complaining about the HOA as well. This is ridiculous!! read more

Their performance has been great, offering suggestions for replanting, scheduling of regular work, weed abatement, and listening to the Board and Homeowner suggestions. Proposals for long term planning for replacements, improvements, while keeping budget considerations in mind help the association maintain it's beauty and value. Kristen, the site manager, is always available to meet on site to review issues and proposals, and has attended board meetings to share projects and progress with the board and homeowners. She makes herself available to the manager to answer questions and listen to concerns. Landscaping can be a hot-button topic for many HOA's, and TLC works hard to keep the property looking great! We contacted TLC based on a neighbor recommendation and boy were we pleased we did. Frank developed a concept for our backyard landscaping that would complement the major renovation we had just completed. He worked directly with us as we discussed what we liked and didn't like all while taking the time to explain things. His crew showed up on time each day and worked very hard. From the initial concept, the demolition stage and all the way through plants placement and planting TLC was great to work with. Punctual, professional and even fun! We had sod and around 160 plants installed, including new irrigation and mulch. We even had them construct a raised herb planter located next to a new BBQ Island! Frank came back about a month later to see how things were going. He suggested watering program updates and noted a few plants that would need to be replaced. Even his follow up was fun and friendly! Wow, I can not tell you how fast and efficient these guys are!! Frank was very prompt and patient with us. We didn't know exactly what we wanted, but we told him what elements we liked. I would give a zero if I could. The company has been managing my complex for quite some time and unfortunately after many neighbor complaints, they are still here, for now. I am listing some thing that have happen: Multiple times the guys have followed me around trying to flirt, whistled and be sarcastic in their words trying to make me stop and talk to them. Very uncomfortable. One time a guy saw me, continued to blow the debris at me until he came to me, he turned around and pushed me into my fence then went back to the yard and blew leaves and more debris. I was shaking, scared and went into my house. I realized I need to get a picture of who it is so I quickly went back out to snap the attached picture. Now, every time he comes back, he blows everything he can toward my patio and I end up with debris all over my belongings. When I reported him pushing me, management told me it was me and he did nothing in a very mean and accusatory way. I've filled a complaint as this is a legal issue. They have made me feel extremely uncomfortable in my home and I always have my husband or somebody here because the neighbors and my family are concerned for what else this guy or these guys can do. Our HOA uses TLC to do weekly maintenance. We also noticed the same issues that Jeanne K has brought up in regards to lack of proper landscape maintenance & practices. (We are not in the same HOA.) Sometimes the company is not aware that their crew is lazy or negligent, since no one checks on their work so they are not held accountable for anything they do or don't do. It's not the first time that we've encountered a good company owner with incompetent employees down the chain who don't care about doing the job properly nor have any pride of workmanship. We are observing the weekly visits and documenting areas that remain neglected, to help make an informed assessment as to whether the company is the issue or just a few workers being sloppy. What a joy to work with this fabulous company. They removed all but one plant from our property and then landscaped with water wise, low maintenance plants. Frank took his time talking to us to get a good feel of what we wanted, had great ideas and we are thrilled with the result. Paco and his crew did not cut our trees down and grind the stumps but removed them-roots and all. They amended the soil, installed a new irrigation system, lighting and hardscape as well as installed a retaining wall so I now have a vegetable garden with fabulous soil. The Landscape Company just completed our back yard a couple of weeks ago and we are so pleased. The yard is on in incline so it can be difficult to work with. The job required removing bricks, pavers, one of our existing retaining walls and some very large plants before the new landscaping could begin. The work crew then installed a beautiful 14" high rock wall along the walkway, leveled the ground where the retaining wall was removed, installed a drip system, approx. 60 plants, and repaired a small retaining wall. They also installed some beautiful pavers. All of this was done in just over a week and the cost was very reasonable. While preparing the ground for planting Herman noticed that our largest retaining walls was bulging in the center and, even though it wasn't part of the contract, he deconstructed part of the wall and rebuilt it so it would be perfect, and it is. Wonderful job Herman. Frank and his work crew were great to work with, always very responsive to my request and I couldn't be happier. Will definitely recommend them to my friends. read more

We had a 200 year old oak tree fall on our house and yard that did extensive damage to our paths, landscape lighting, and irrigation. I went to a local nursery to try to figure out how to put together an insurance claim for the damaged and destroyed plants and they gave me some great advice, call a landscape company that can do all of the work for you and get one bid to submit for the insurance claim. Frank came in and gave me a bid for replacement value of the plants and all of the construction, plumbing and electrical as well. Months later he was really flexable about adjusting the quote and plan to reflect the new palnts that were now going to have to live in our very hot and exposed yard. Frank suggested a couple of fast growing interesting shade trees, and worked with me to create a cool list of drought tolerant plants. We had to wait a couple of weeks while they were tying up other jobs to get started but I really respect a business that is willing to concentrate on getting a job done beginning to end and not stringing their customers out. We were told it would take about a week to complete our project, they had a full crew that was curteous and respectful and proper equipment there starting early and working solid days. In three days our yard was transformed and looked AMAZING!! We were so happy we went with TLC and are hoping to have them back for additional projects in the future!! read more

They provided a terrible experience; Frank Sr came out to look at my property and give me a quote for the work I wanted. He looked around but wanted to go watch the Warriors so he said he would come back the next day. He returned with his son Frank on Wednesday and they promised me a quote by Friday. When I didn't receive the quote by 3p Friday; I called the office and I was promised one before they closed at 4p. It never showed up and it still has not shown up. My experience was terrible, Frank Sr promised a lot when he was at me house but there was no follow through. Would not recommend them to anyone. Too bad I can't give them no stars. read more

This is the worst landscape company possible, even imaginable. The company was hired by our condominium homeowners association. Here are only a few problems we have with TLC: 1. TLC's landscape workers blow leaves and other trash and debris into the storm drains, and continue to do so even after being told this is an illegal practice and asked to stop, and after they were informed that vector control found that the leaves are creating pools of stagnant water (runoff from the irrigation system), a breeding area for mosquitos; 2. TLC's landscape workers also blow leaves onto public land, and when our Parks Dept workers politely asked them to stop, the TLC workers spoke rudely to the Parks Dept workers and continue to blow leaves onto public property; 3. TLC's landscape workers blow away top soil and mulch, and TLC charges our Association to replace it; 4. TLC"s landscape workers use herbicide excessively and inappropriately. They spray herbicide on dirt areas (where there are no plants), next to storm drains (and sometimes just before it rains), and spray herbicide on beneficial plants, such as protected native species; they use so much herbicide that the areas they spray look like they have been watered; 5. TLC's landscape workers have been instructed to not trim our trees, yet they continue to do so and cut limbs in ways that go against industry standards, and smaller branches they rip off the trees, not bothering to cut them; 6. TLC landscape workers trim the hedges too often and too much during drought conditions, making them "woody" and shortening the life of the plants; 7. TLC landscape workers mow the lawns excessively during drought conditions and do not allow the grass to grow to industry standard heights of 3"-6"; 8. TLC landscape workers mix recyclables, compostables and other trash with plant debris, and improperly dispose of them; 9. TLC landscape workers, and their tree workers, do not check for birds nests before they over-trim hedges and trim or remove large trees; their workers say checking for birds nests is not necessary because "most nests are just squirrels"; 10. One TLC landscape worker was seen by a resident chasing ducks with the rider mower. When the resident asked the worker to stop, he laughed and continued. When the resident reported the incident to a TLC manager, the manager did not think the worker's actions were objectionable and was not aware of any law that prohibits such actions (harrassement of wildlife). 11. TLC landscape workers use gas-powered blowers to blow leaves, and the workers do not wear protective face masks or earplugs, and they do not turn off the blowers when residents are walking in their vicinity; 12. TLC landscape workers, all men, use the women's bathroom at our pool and leave the seat up. The workers have been told by residents that they are using a women's bathroom, yet they continue to use it. There are three men's bathrooms on the property, and one of them is adjacent to the women's bathroom that they use; 13. Our community hired TLC to convert the property to a drought tolerant one; the company continues to recommend plants that are not natives nor drought-tolerant. After the company was hired, we learned they do not have a botanist or other plant certified staff member. 14. The owner is an arborist, yet the new trees the TLC landscape workers planted on our property were not properly staked or landscaped (irrigation pools around the trunks) according to a top-rated Berkeley arborist who did a site visit at our request. Please do not hire this company. It is time that landscape companies like TLC are put out of business in the interest of consumer protections and human and environmental health. I chose The Landscape Company because out of 3 different landscaping companies, they gave me the lowest bid. Our entire side yard was landscaped in 4 days, and we could not be happier with the final product. It is beautiful. It's exactly what we wanted and done at a high-quality level. It was important to Frank that the job was done right, and he went over and above to ensure that it was. Frank communicated clearly & promptly.
