I'll reiterate what others have said. Matt comes in with the best price without any negotiation. I've hired a lot of services for around our house and most of the time there are some negotiations needed. BTW, that's a hint to those who aren't use to hiring jobs (demolition, house painting, tree service, concrete, etc), you should do at least a one minute negotiation, you'd be surprised how much you can save by just asking nicely. The longest negotiation was 5 minutes with our house painter and that was to add more colors to the job. Anyway, with Matt, no negotiation needed because I already received quotes from 6 other stump removal or tree services. I thought I had hit my rock bottom price the day before, I negotiated 20% off from my lowest quote of a tree service I used in the past, but fortunately Matt came out the day after and gave me an unbeatable quote and was ready to come in the next day. FYI, I had received quotes well over 2X the price Matt gave me, but they were going to take the mulch. In this case, I knew I could use the mulch or do what I did before and slowly dump in our green bins over the next few months for free. I thought it was going to be an all day affair because I had someone working on these same exact stumps before and it felt like it took forever. The main work was a 12' wide X 1.5' tall stump from a previously gorgeous 100 year redwood. Then Matt made short work with a pretty rotted out Palm type stump that was sitting under a deck for 7 years and finally some cleanup work of another stump that the last tree service didn't bother looking hard enough for. I believe it took from around 9am - 1pm. I was impressed how fast he got it done with a 30+ HP Vermeer that I think he said was a decade and a half old. We did have easy access to all the work and Matt did say I do a pretty good job preparing around the large redwood stump, but still the speed was surprising and I even told him that I was impressed. Anyway, do not bother with most tree services when it comes to stump grinding, they'll come in much more expensive and it's probably because they'll take longer to do the job. Matt has a specialty and he can do it faster and cheaper. But don't take my word for it, get your quotes and you'll see. Matt did take a day or two to get back to me from when I originally left a voicemail, but honestly it was worth it to me. I don't like paying more $$$ for people doing the exact same work, especially with the amount of work I need for my projects. read more

I had a large tree removed 2 and a half years ago by a local tree service. Although they claimed they ground the stump as the contract stated they would, the tree continued to sprout up all across my yard making it nearly impossible to do anything with. We only needed one removed but the minimum charge is $200 - towing a big old grinder around is understandably a burden for a small job. I couldn't find anyone with a smaller minimum charge, unfortunately, as this was a small job but also too much hassle to rent / tow a grinder ourselves, and too big to remove with other tools. He left the wood chips and some wood block remnants in place for me to clean up, but he told me this before starting. read more

Fast service, price seemed fair, and he protected ours and our neighbor's properties. We had stumps lining our neighbor's driveway from trees that were planted too close and were showing signs that they were going to fall. I hired East Bay Stump removal because I had several (6 - 7) small stumps to remove, ranging from 1 to 6 inches in diameter in my backyard. Matt, the owner, had a car problem but still managed to keep my appointment. Great communication in letting me know his status! After he made it to my house, part of my entrance to the backyard was narrow to fit his machinery. He tried to fit it thru but it was 1 inch too narrow. Therefore, he said he could try to manually remove by using his pick and I said sure. Wow, I can't tell you how hard he worked to remove all the stumps/roots within 30 mins!! Amazing! Some of the stumps were next to the fence and sprinkler head. Fence and sprinkler were kept intact. I think he did a better job manually than the stump grinding machine!! Highly recommend! read more

Mathew did a great job grounding out the basketball size stump from a tree I had cut down. I left him a check and it was done when I came home from work. The price was fair, no utilities were harmed, which is the reason you should not do this yourself. I am a DIY person, I cut down my own tree and almost rented a stump grinder, but the thought of accidentally hitting an underground gas pipe or sewer line changed my mind! Matt sent me an email before he did the stump removal advising me of what could happen before he did the stump removal. For example, he said if there's a drip irrigation system it could be damaged and that he wasn't responsible for that. I had a system, it got damaged, and he told me how to fix it, which was quite easy. He did a good job with the stump removal and communication was good with him prior to him beginning work. He let me know when he was ailing and had to be off work, but he said he'd come two days later.
