    Side of Fries

Would knowing how your fries were made, change your experience of them for the better? I impulsively visited Garden Market to get out of the cold on a particularly frigid night. I ordered a burger, which came with the pictured side of fries. A disconnected online delivery order, sent off across the digital ether and appearing at your doorstep, provides significantly less information about those serving your fries than an in-person order. It was helpful to see this attentively clean and well stocked organic market for myself, and how the staff operated. Three different people attended to my fries. It was started by the sandwich artist, and put aside whilst he worked on my burger. He stepped aside for both the burger and the fries to be completed by a second chef. As his attention turned to my burger and the basket of fries were lifted from the deep fryer, the cashier noticed me waiting. He rung me up in the meantime and went over to check on my fries. Assessing they went a little cold and weren't cooked to his liking, he started another basket of fries in a neighboring deep fryer and explained to me the reason for the delay. When I rushed home through the cold, I was excited to tear open the foil tray to see what the third fry cook was searching for in deciding to put on a second batch of fries. I had hoped they would travel well in the cold. Garden Market served a satisfying helping of fries as a side. It would be far too much if I had been served any more. The proffered condiments and included ample ketchup - 8 satchets. I used 4, accompanied by my own hot sauce. If they were particularly well cooked from beautiful potatoes, crispy skins, fluffy on the inside - they would have exceeded all expectation. But my expectations and what I ask from a stop into a new convenience store on a cold night, are modest - speed, convenience, heat and condiments. They worked the best out from what they had. I didn't ask for more, and it was everything I could ask for. They were convenient fries from a convenience store.

    Anyways fresh produce.

Nice selection and wide variety of fruits, dried fruits, nuts, and vegetables. 24 hour deli counter includes deli sandwiches, salads, juices, and made to order smoothies. Lots of organic selections and one of the few bodegas in Stuyvesant Heights that sells my favorite Chobani greek yogurt and fresh cut and whole watermelons. This spot is extremely pricey, you will pay for ambience, displays, hard word floors, and convenience, here you will find cabbage $1.39 a pound, cabbage at the grocer market is $0.59 what a mark up!?!?!?

Not sure what this is, was supposed to be chicken cutlet....

Walking in it smelled fresh and everything was clean and organized. There are various supplements, herbs, and they even do juices, and vegetarian food options. The aisles are a bit narrow, so be mindful when walking through. There was R&B music playing and it made my shopping experience a bit more relaxing. The aloe I was looking for was right in front of the store, which it made things quick and easy to grab and go. I paid under $5 dollars for my aloe leaf and was able to use a card. The cashier was really pleasant checking me out. This is a hidden gem and its Black Owned! I look forward to visiting again soon!

I was so excited to find this place on Yelp and that it's minutes away from home. Small as it is, the aisles are absolutely filled with whatever nutritious goodies your heart desires. Chinese bean curd? They have it. Forbidden rice? You've got your pick of 3 different brands. Turmeric Coconut Water? My new favorite find! I made out like a bandit with an armful of bags of quinoa. There are signs laying out their guidelines for keeping 6 feet apart while in the store (admittedly very challenging because the aisles are rather cramped) but they do limit how many people are inside at once. I definitely felt uneasy as I had to almost press up against people to pass them in the aisles but everyone I encountered was masked. Come here for your sea moss or ginger candy needs. Their menu also lists a number of immunity boosting smoothies whose value proposition could never be stronger than it is right now.

We noticed it wasn't too far from our Brooklyn neighborhood so we headed over on a Saturday afternoon. The shop was dimly lit with natural light beaming through the front window. The smell was herbaceous and woody, but not as pungent as classic botanicas that can overwhelm you with scents of patchouli and incense. We were greeted by Sid and Ziggy, both of whom were laid-back but ready to help at any time. They also gave the shop some down-to-earth vibes which is great when you're a bit more pragmatic like me. We explained to them the one to eight problems we each had and they directed us to teas, herbs, tinctures, and even smokable blends (not my scene but helpful). It was heaven! I left with the Sinus Formula Tea and Golden Tonic. The tea is smooth, round, & tasty, and has been keeping my sinus headaches at bay. I haven't used the tonic as much but every time I add it to my water, my body goes into flush-mode which is great for my body aches and overall gut health. Sid mentioned that there was an online shop for when we have to re-up but this experience is well-worth the trip.

In addition to being a certified herbalist, she's a RN, a fiber artist, a mother and a grandmother. The story of her development is truly inspiring so you should just drop in to ask her about it, especially if you are wondering how to give yourself the permission to fully acknowledge the dimensionality of your life. Because yes: you can work your day job, pursue crafts, garden, have wonderful relationships, volunteer, lean into running marathons, learn a new language, get serious about starting that organic vegan hot pockets food truck idea, etc. Whatever it is that you do, let Donna hold space for the fullness of your life, with some useful, organic and well-priced herbal healing. Maybe you need some herbal tea as a thirst quencher or as medicine; or hand-crafted CBD balm to ease muscle soreness or as pain management; or perhaps some tincture for a dry, scratchy throat; or a bunch of calendula to make a soothing summertime drink that cools your system? Yup. All of that can be found in this deceptively tiny shop that stocked to hilt as any apothecary should be but don't expect a dark little store with midnight blue velvet drapes, a selection of wands, a bubbling cauldron, crystal balls and butterbeer lol. (All the herbal majik--aka formulas that truly work and are way better for your body than Advil or Pepto Bismol--is crafted elsewhere ;) Instead, you'll walk into an airy, duplex space that feels light and fresh, with open shelves stocking large jars of dried herbs, flowers, seaweeds, plant materials, arranged by color and texture--Donna says that this is the artist in her--that invites the shopper to get pulled in by her curiosity. Herbal folks who know what they want will appreciate that everything is easy to find and because Donna is right there to answer any questions. I was thrilled to find the calendula I needed for my favorite summertime drink and even more so to learn that it was grown upstate. Donna shared that when she's not sourcing directly from small organic farms, she's personally harvesting herbs for her formulations and bulk offerings. Spiral Herbal Remedies used to live in SOHO but since the shop relocated to its Washington Ave spot, (Get Donna to tell you the story of how the splendid old oak tree anchored right in front of the shop is a Celtic symbol symbol of healing that called to her to rent this spot. Goosebumps. Seriously.), the store's stock list is committed to serving its Caribbean and diverse neighborhood's needs. This means lots of Irish Moss (pls note the Celtic connection), imported directly from Jamaica, which is not just for enhanced boom chika bow wow, but also for congestion/mucous and holds anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Irish Moss is also super amazing for dry skin and for skin conditions ranging from eczema to psoriasis. I also saw huge jars of turmeric, and rose petals, etc. easily made into beauty treatments and/or used as driving flavors in Indian, Bangladeshi, Persian, Ethiopian, Latinx cuisines. Bonus: Spiral stocks a few products not made in-house but by local neighborhood crafters and other niche herbalists. Check out the lovely candles (with embedded dried flowers and crystals) and soothing herbal goats' milk soap, too, for yourself and those you love. Finally, Spiral Herbal Remedies has a charming cafe table set up out front where you can take a load off and have a little rest. I love this gesture to the neighborhood best. Maybe I'll see you hanging out there there I swing by next!
