I had booked an appointment for my mother who is in a lot of pain with Dr De Grouw. Group was given to me from my mom's insurance Aetna. I called the Clifton location and gave all details of my moms insurance and was told they are in network. Soonest appt was today in Mahwah! Great 45 minute ride for me but Mom is in pain and needs to be seen. Completed paperwork online the day I booked the appointment. Get to Mahwah office and am told group is not in network. Check Aetna's website, plan is listed as participating with this group. Receptionist tells me, they don't accept HMO just PPO. Ok, so I asked how much is the visit, response was "I don't know!" They call someone to find out and are told they "don't know." So now, I'm like maybe they don't understand. I'm going to self pay. What is the fee? Receptionist tells me we can't self pay because my mother has insurance. The doctor tells me it's against the rules. Huh? Since when? I work in the medical field and have been a medical biller for 27 years, since when can you not self pay? They wouldn't accept cash! Bizarre! So we leave the office and I call Aetna and again am told they are in network so we file a claim against them for not accepting my mother. My poor 81 year old mother who is in pain and this office declined her insurance when they are supposed to be in network, then, declines service for cash!?! The most bizarre unbelievable experience I have ever had with a doctors office! Apparently our money is no good to them. Maybe because they knew my mother was from Russia and they held it against her for what is going on these days, I don't know, but I would never let anyone in this office examine me or my family or my friends!
