That's where Walt's really shines -- long after the posted hours, they open the space to all sorts of local hobby groups. I've been there with a rocket club in the back room, RC cars going on the track, and yet another group up front, meeting in the actual hobby shop part. The staff is super-friendly, and willing to help out and offer suggestions for whatever kind of project you want to take on. If you need hobby stuff, this is a great place to go in the Syracuse area.

There was a display layout running by the door and it was fun to watch a Big Boy snake through the layout with a long train. Note that they don't have any wooden (Brio/Thomas) trains in stock, though they did have some O gauge Thomas train sets. Since I didn't have a list of things I needed, I was most just browsing. The owner was very pleasant as I rattled off a list of one-off items and helped me locate what I was looking for. We discussed custom runs for a bit, as well as the the future of the hobby. He clearly knew his stuff, and watching him assist some new modelers with simple, direct answers without an up-sell attached was refreshing. There is a dearth of good full-service hobby shops these days, and yet this one manages to rise above. I highly recommend it.

Since 2003, their owner Tim has worked on my trains installing DCC (digital command control) decoders and other maintenance work. In fact, when in the beginning I would go over to his house and he would do his work there. Over the years, he has opened up several shops and the business has slowly grown. It isn't the largest of train stores, but they don't carry any of the low-end, junk stuff that will break easily. I have heard that they are moving again to Greece, which ironically will be just a mile or so from where I used to live when I was in the Rochester area.

My husband and I took our niece here, and I think she had more fun just looking around than actually picking out things to buy. There are huge sections of Legos, models, craft kits, games, toys, beads, painting supplies, and even stuff for babies. My niece got a coloring book, pastel colored pencils, a game with sparkly fish, and a little plastic helicopter. My husband even got some super glue that he needed for work. Nothing was terribly priced, and the staff was helpful and friendly. I have been trying to fit more crafts into my life as a relaxing hobby, and I think I'll have to visit Dan's again to pick up a craft kit. It's a fun place to just browse too.
