My two sons have been seeing Dr Halweg for almost 15 years, and he has seen them through young childhood through to their 20s. I genuinely can say that Dr. Halweg's knowledge, expertise, diagnostic help, and treatment plans have kept my boys alive through serious mental health issues, ADD/ADHD, ASD, anxiety, and times of depression. He has always been very conservative with his suggested treatments, starting with changes in diet, daily habits, supplements or exercise before we tried prescription medication...which I appreciated. When necessary, his knowledge of medication and how different parts of the brain work or react has been critical to pinpointing any changes or expectations. I always think meeting in person is more engaging, but the fact that he offers telemedicine options has been incredibly helpful through Covid or other locational moves such as college for my kids. Dr. Halweg also has always treated my husband and I as welcome participants in my children's sessions too, since we could provide insight for better care. Dr Halweg will get to the bottom of an issue, its root causes, and offer suggested treatments or strategies better than anyone else we've used during our almost 20 years of therapy for our family. The one star is for the office dog, Ms. Parker. Dr. Halweg tried to proselytize me when I was grieving my dying grandfather. I got very emotional during one of our sessions as I had just come from visiting my grandpa in the ICU. Dr. Halweg was NOT comforting. Instead, he kept questioning what I think happens after we die, why I wasn't a Christian, and was fixated on identifying my religion. It was just plain unprofessional, inappropriate, and irrelevant. Dr. Halweg would often ask deeply personal and invasive questions without attempting to build rapport. And even though he knew I used to have an eating disorder, he would still make me weigh myself every session, and sometimes comment on my weight. I did not feel safe with this doctor. I felt unheard, uncared for, and disrespected. I do not recommend going to see Dr. Halweg if you have any religious trauma, a history of eating disorders, or are part of the LGBTQ+ community. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Halweg. In searching for a psychiatrist, I came across Dr. Halweg's practice. After reviewing his webpage, I felt confident he was a good doctor for me. I especially loved that he had a Bible verse on his homepage. It's been over a year now and meeting with him has been completely transformative. He and his staff truly care about helping you, meeting you where you're at to make sure you stay on track to get the outcome you need. I called with a fairly time-critical issue for my daughter, and left a VERY detailed message describing the issue and need. The answering "machine" said they would return the call "within 24 business hours." (The careless message should have tipped me off) Is that 24 hours during their "business week," or 3 "business days?" Either way, they didn't meet the commitment. Got a call back 7 days later and they left a message only saying to call back. I called back 20 minutes later and had to leave another message. That call was returned 5 days later, only to tell me that Dr. Halweg is too busy and they would like to take down all of the information to put my daughter in a queue for someday when he could take a new patient. Quite possibly, the psychiatric situation I described in my voicemail was more than this doctor is capable of managing (just another possible explanation for the lack of help). No doctor wants to admit they are professionally weak if they have a booming practice of just prescribing anti-depressants... This is terrible mental health care. This is not care, it is just a business. If this doctor is so wildly successful that his office can't return calls in a timely manner he should either 1) clearly say he is not taking new patients, or 2) hire another person to return calls! Instead, this business keeps people in need waiting so they can ensure they have a full backlog of patients when they need new business. Heads up: Dr. Halweg apparently does not have time for new patients, so if your need is time-critical (what mental health need is NOT time critical?) he is not an option. I hope this review saves people the two weeks I just spent trying to get help for my daughter from this "professional." read more

Words cannot describe how it feels to be unlocked. How it feels to finally understand why something is the way it is. I'm referring to my experience with Dr. Halweg, who, after a series (roughly 45-minutes) of behavioral questions, diagnosed me with ADHD. What I did not also realize is that Dr. Halweg is also focused on deeper problems within me that I was not aware of and brilliantly brought them to light. Today, I feel that my productivity has more than 10x. To some, this might find ridiculous, but it is true. If you were to ask anyone that knows me, they would almost always share with you that I work hard. However, what many people probably are not aware of is that even though I worked hard, I have always been frustrated with my output. Getting myself to focus in the past -- especially on tasks that I did not want to do -- was incredibly difficult. When I first heard the diagnosis, it was hard for me to believe. Through hard work and luck, I have been fortunate to do many things, including giving the commencement address for my college. It blew my mind that even though I achieved so much, I could have had an attention deficit disorder. I have always had a hunch, but I never thought that I genuinely did because of what I accomplished. If you are someone who thinks you may have ADHD, I highly recommend you give Dr. Halweg's office a call. No matter your age. Trust me; it is life-changing. I was hesitant to see a psychiatrist because I've always believed natural remedies were best in pretty much all situations. When my anxiety got so bad that natural remedies didn't offer much help anymore, I decided to find a psychiatrist. I read some positive reviews for Dr. Halweg and decided to give psychiatry a try, as the anxiety had become debilitating, and so I was desperate for help. After calling Dr. Halweg and leaving a message, within 30 minutes or so he called back. He was very empathetic on the phone, and right away I knew this was going to be a good fit for me. Anyways, my initial session was an hour long, and I broke down crying when he asked me about my anxiety. I had been holding in a lot of emotions for a long time, and I never had anyone I felt that comfortable with to be vulnerable. To make a long story short, I left the office and went to my pharmacy as he had called me in a medicine for the anxiety. Within minutes of taking the medicine I felt much better, and within a few days I also noticed that my rosacea redness on my face was completely gone. I've struggled with low self-esteem for over 10 years due to rosacea, and I've tried dozens of remedies and skin care products. I was overjoyed that I finally had a white face like you're supposed to have. I looked into it, and it turns out I had a type of neurogenic rosacea that is very hard to treat, but with the right medicine, it goes away completely. So it turns out that all of those years of avoiding psychiatry were years that I could've been free from anxiety and an embarrassing red face had I gone in to get treatment sooner. I wanted to write this review because I believe more people could benefit from psychiatry if they had the right psychiatrist. I've heard some horror stories which is one of the reasons I stayed away so long. My one regret is that I didn't seek help for mental health issues sooner. I'm so thankful that I was blessed with the perfect psychiatrist that is empathetic, really cares about his patients, and seems to intuitively know the perfect treatment protocol that gets great results, fast. If you're looking for a psychiatrist that can help you improve the quality of your life who also cares about you and treats you with warmth and positive regard, then look no further. Dr. Halweg is the man for the job. P.S.- Another reason I decided to choose Dr. Halweg is that I read in someone's review that his wife was also empathetic. She's the first person you come into contact with at the office that checks you in and has you fill out a couple of quick forms. She's an absolute delight. I had a Horrible experience! He never introduced himself and this was my first time meeting him via Telehealth. (Via Internet) He was rude, dismissive and extremely cold! I was shocked because I saw other reviews and I thought he would be a nice person! But boy was I wrong! His intake with me lasted only 15 minutes! Usually any intake on a new patient lasts at least an hour! He seemed in a hurry and when he asked me a question he seemed distracted like he wasn't really listening! My teenage son has been seeing Dr. Halweg for almost a year. Of course, I don't sit in on the therapy sessions, but my son's depression and anxiety have definitely improved and I only wish we had found Dr. Halweg sooner. My son had other psychiatrists in the past, but didn't respond to them. Dr. Halweg is the only doctor he's wanted to stick with. Every time I've ever called (even on a Sunday), Dr. Halweg has gotten back to me right away. His wife Aja and their dog Miss Parker work in the office and they are both very friendly and welcoming . Yes, if you miss an appt, you'll be charged if you don't give them notice. But if you give them notice, they'll work with you to reschedule. Parking in their building is expensive, so we park kitty corner to their building at Capitol Place -- only $1.50 for 1 hour. read more

As a new resident of Hawaii..i have to say...I feel blessed to have met Dr. Halweg and Aja and their new receptionist. My initial phone call was actually answered!!! ... and I was set up for an intake within 10 days!. The front staff makes you feel very welcome. Dr. Halweg is excellent and takes time to explain meds as well as depression and how the brain really works. I look forward to meeting with him again!. I have confidence he will help me!. Also, I had a late Friday appointment...and somewhere during the day I realized I lost my purse...with the rental car key in it!! I called the office and they immediately called me back even though they were already gone for the day. Aja could tell I was very distressed and although they did not recall seeing the purse, they went back to the office on Friday evening to double- check!! I can't believe they would do that....but..i think they understand how stressful it has been...and how " scattered" I was..sadly ..purse was not there ( luckily I had my wallet in a different bag!..unluckyly the rental car agency charged me $450.00 for a new key)....but that's a different story!!! As far as reviewers upset that they were charged for a " missed appointment ".. that is standard practice in any medical group....as a therapist myself in private practice for over 20 years.. we don't like to charge for missed appointments..but...we have to make a living!. Their policy is clearly posted, and as a client you also sign an agreement to be charged...does not get any clearer than that!! The Doctor makes a commitment of his time for you...a time that most likely could easily be filled with proper 24 hour notice...as patients we need to respect his time and dedication to us by honoring our appointment time and the cancellation policy!. read more

I'm not one to write reviews but my experience with Dr. Halweg has been life changing. I was very reluctant in trying medication as I have briefly in the past and never felt the benefits but I found myself getting progressively worse with my Anxiety. The panic attacks, agoraphobia, O.C.D, increased fear, irritability and moderate depression was taking it's toll and It was affecting my everyday life and pretty much limiting me from doing everything I love and being functional. I went to Dr. Halweg feeling very uneasy and exhausted, he and his wife Aja were very kind and welcoming. After going through all my symptoms he went thru an easy to understand explanation of what was happening in my brain and the reasons why my emotions were that way and why and how he was going to prescribe me the certain medications. He was very confident that I would feel better the next time we'd meet. I was hopeful but very weary that I'd feel a lot better and didn't want to get my hopes up. I took the first pills at night and the next day I woke up feeling better, with energy and the dread and fear subsiding. Long story short it's been over a month and my mood has changed so much. I feel so much better, I still have moderate O.C.D but the Panic Attacks, agoraphobia,irritability, extreme fear are completely gone. I also feel so much energy and just this motivation to do things again and the lethargy and procrastination has pretty much gone. I truly appreciate Dr. Halweg and his wife and I only hope to get better and better. For anyone reluctant in trying medications or seeing someone for Anxiety/Depression you shouldn't. You might be missing on finding well being. My only advice is to be really picky on who you choose to find help form. I'm very lucky to have found Dr. Halweg. read more

I don't really know where to begin with Dr. Halweg and his wonderful wife, Aja. This review could easily be the size of a novel, but who has time to read a novel, am I right?! I moved to Hawaii in February totally nervous about having to find a new doctor after having the same doctor for 12 years in New York City. My first or second week in Hawaii I sat down to do just that, find a new doctor. After numerous phone calls to multiple doctors with no answer but instead a voicemail greeting, I soon realized it was a Saturday. Guess who took the time out on a Saturday to call me back? Dr. Garrett Halweg. Not only Dr. Halweg but his great wife, Aja. After a fantastic conference call, it had felt like I'd already known them for years. When first moving to Hawaii and not knowing a single person, this speaks volumes. They're not only a doctors office I have to visit every month, I also consider them my friends. There's a billion other reasons why I recommend this super duel, but like I said, I'm trying to avoid a novel here. All I have to say is...
